| Edyis lay awake in her cot, listening to the oppressive breathing of the room and feeling claustrophobic for it. At least tonight it wasn't the usual nightmare that kept her from falling back asleep, but rather Irianke's words still rattling around in her brain along with so many other disjointed thoughts. She didn't know what to make of the woman, nor could she decide how she felt about the advice given. She tried to tuck it away in a corner of her mind with the other thoughts she liked to pretend she didn't have. The things she pretended not to notice, feel, think or desire. The things she pretended didn't exist. Like an unopened letter, a brother living in exile, or lectures she had pretended didn't apply to her. Irianke's words didn't fit into that corner, and they made it so that nothing else back into it either. Surrendering to the inevitable, Edyis sits up on the cot and swinging her legs over the edge to feel the bite of cold stone against her bare feet. Her hands grip the edge of the cot as she considers the goldrider's advice. "Advice worth taking." She murmurs, and that one small confession aloud is all she needs to get her up and dressed and out the dormitory door. She passes a note and a bottle to one of the drudges working the late shift on her way out. |
