| Weyrling Training Cavern, High Reaches Weyr All the furniture here has been pushed to one side of the room to allow a large pathway opposite: room enough to let weyrling dragons pass from the bowl's archway to the cavernous barracks at the back. None of the furniture matches, either: it varies from big cushioned, claw-footed chairs to those of plain wood, while the most seating is at the two stone tables ringed by low and equally hard stone benches. Without the tapestries that decorate many of the Weyr's other interior spaces, the room always echoes with noise, no matter how few are there. What it does have, however, are several colorful murals: on one wall, a detailed diagram of a dragon's anatomy; opposite, next to a creaky wooden door, a number of painted and labeled wing formations. Near the entrance is a large-scale version of the Weyr's badge, while the back wall, by the barracks, features a detailed map of the continent. The latter area's also home to one big, beat-up couch, black or maybe blue -- the thing's so old and filthy it's hard to tell, though it's certainly comfortable.
Maybe it's because K'zin made so much of it, but he's often found studying near the gaming table. Tela's timing is perfect (though she probably planned it that way) for Sh'mel had just left to get some food; studying is hard work. "Mm?" K'zin asks as he pulls his nose from the big book on the table in front of him, finding Telavi's face. "Well, I'm still alive now, so I figure I've been doing alright with this whole survival thing. How about you, you surviving alright? Plan to continue to do so, I hope?" There's a touch of playfulness in his voice, but there's that definable edge that is his "professional self", a little harder and decidedly less warm-n-fuzzy. "So far." Telavi takes a deep breath to illustrate just how alive she is, even if she lets it out more slowly for the sake of the bit of fluff that she's teasing out, fingertips seamstress-gentle to undo the twist so it doesn't wad up further. It can be fuzzy, even if he can't, as much. "I'm pretty sure expiring isn't scheduled until later in the month, too many wings to shadow first. Do you two get to influence that at all?" "Expiring is not on the schedule, Telavi." K'zin's voice is firm, not the least bit playful about this. "If you want to expire, do it next month when the paperwork will fall in someone else's lap. I like to keep mine full of other things." Not that this month looks at all promising for those other things. He glances in the direction Sh'mel went, then back to the greenrider. "Not really. We lead, but the assignments get handed to us. Probably for the best that way." He doesn't elaborate on why that's best, but so far Sh'mel's failing at leading and K'zin seems to be waiting for him to not, carefully not overstepping the bounds of wingsecondship. Sh'mel's in charge. Right? (Not really.) "Next month is forever. Waiting is so hard." For a wild assortment of things. Tela glances at him through her lashes before returning to her work, holding it up to the light so she can check for clotted fiber and not troubling herself to check for Sh'mel at all. He's got that, if nothing else, in hand. "It's for the simplest, anyway. Imagine having to deal with people trying to talk you into changing this or that on top of everything else." If she's inclined to wonder whether he and Sh'mel really could change things if they wanted... it certainly doesn't show, her tone remaining practical but for the brief note of sympathy. Though she does say, not a direct commentary on what is or isn't going well this early in the game, "Perhaps I should have offered to collect the food myself. A wingleader doing it doesn't necessarily seem right, but then he does get to make the decisions this way, doesn't he," so that's at least one reason not to volunteer. "I'm pretty sure I heard once that good things come to those who wait. That might be true." K'zin's quip springs easily to his lips and off into the air to be taken for whatever it might promise. "Imagine that." The bronzer's tone communicates more of his wry amusement than the words themselves. "Were you planning on asking for something in particular if I did have that kind of sway? Not trying to get special treatment, are you?" The question comes a touch more playful than the rest. "I think Sh'mel probably wanted some air. The walk is short to the kitchens, but a good few moments to clear one's head. It's been a long day, you know." They've all been long so far, certainly longest for K'zin and Sh'mel. "I'm pretty sure I heard that people who hold their breath too long, waiting, turn... blue." Hard to say whether it's more the counter or its rhyme that Telavi sounds more tickled with, though it can't hurt that she's also reaching over to plant that little halo of cloud atop its mountain peak just so. That special treatment earns him a long-lashed glance a little while later, an all too considering repetition, but it's the mention of the walk that softens her smile as she fixes one bent-over tree and then wanders over to look out toward where Sh'mel had disappeared. "Fresh air. Solith would approve. I wish I'd thought of that, especially with the weather, how we can't just keep everything open." "I'm pretty sure we'll see evidence of that before the month is over." K'zin's answer comes but tells that he is no longer really speaking of faces. "Although," He gives a glance around the caverns and the studying weyrlings, "We could take a quick walk, if you wanted. Through the tunnels maybe?" A single arched brow is suggestive, "Get some fresh air so we don't turn blue? We can probably be gone and back before Sh'mel comes back." Telavi probably shouldn't be surprised, really, but it's there in the slow, considering smile she turns back to him. Not too slow, though. "As a matter of fact, I feel a sudden urge to consult with you upon shadowing the remaining wings in reverse alphabetical order." Her gaze slides towards the weyrlingmasters' office, but... not today. "It's quite important, not to mention time-critical," which is no doubt why she's already off to grab her coat. Goodbye, office! Goodbye, halo. |
