| Infirmary, High Reaches Weyr Two sets of double doors, one from the the inner caverns and a recently built set from the dragon infirmary, lead into the unnaturally hushed human infirmary. Despite fastidious cleaning, the scent of redwort and numbweed has long since soaked into every smooth-carved surface, along with other, subtler medicinal smells. Pristinely made cots are lined up against the walls; most of them are left open to view, but some in the back are surrounded by curtains for delicate procedures or critical patients. About halfway between the two entrances is the counter for the healers on duty; it guards the entrance to the storage rooms just beyond, their shelves and cabinets lined with meticulously labeled bottles, boxes, jars, and even vats of supplies. The Weyrhealer's office is also here, along with another side room for mixing up medicines and the like.
Telavi had been sneaking through the twice-moonlit dimness and then risking the wrath of the dragonhealers to short-cut it to her friend, only hers is more the obvious kind of sneaking than Sabella's, so it's just as well that the other girl interrupted her. "Sabs!" Too loud. Her hands fly over her mouth, and quickly she nods-and-smiles to the locals just long enough to get them out of there and into the relative safety of the bowl. Once there, "Are you all right? They wouldn't let me in! Your poor arm!" and with it, more of the hand-wringing from earlier when she'd first heard the news. "I'll take notes for you, I promise!" "You can be my escort back. I was supposed to wait for someone but I had to get out of there." Sabs glances over her shoulder as they escape out into the bowl. Clean air feels really good right now, no redwort or numbweed fouling it up. "My body hurts. And my arm is broken." She kind of waves her slinged arm at Telavi with a wry, sad grin. "I was asleep anyway. They gave me some fellis, I'm still sort of sleepy." In fact she begins to yawn now. "Thank you. I write with this hand, unfortunately." Naturally, it's always the limb that you use the most, right? "And you're stinky," but that doesn't mean that Telavi doesn't stand ready to escort Sabella anywhere she wants to go, and it's more commiserating than complaint. She begins to walk, carefully, watching out for rocks that might trip the other weyrling when she's not looking. "Oh, Sabs. Fellis? I wonder if you'll get out of some of the summaries or you'll have to dictate to us, but that's a long way away, I know, you only just got out." She also has to watch out for the odd passersby, even first one getting an uncharacteristic glare from the girl that has the man hurrying along and away. "Is the fellis treating you right? I've had it twice, and it's so nice before I throw everything up." "I know." She laments with her in a low whine. Sabs walks around to the other side of Telavi so she can drop the hand of the unbroken arm onto her shoulder. "Dictate to you? I sure hope not. I hate public speaking. I don't know what's going to happen yet, I haven't seen Quinlys so far. I'zech came in with me." There's maybe the hint of a grimace there. Or a wince. One that has her glancing at the hand on the other greenrider's shoulder. The heel of it. Her eyes follow the man that goes hurrying away. "Oh, you throw up? I... I've never had it before. I don't feel like I want to throw up. But I haven't eaten anything in a long time. I'm hungry. Maybe I shouldn't." She doesn't want to vomit, clearly. 'Well, not public-public, and I'd take out all the 'um's and 'uh's," Telavi promises, focusing on tucking her arm about her friend's waist to help her better balance to the point where she only notices Sabella's look at the very last moment, and even then she doesn't seem to have put the clues together. "Quinlys. I hadn't even thought that far yet... what did I'zech say? Don't throw up," as though it would be Sabella's conscious decision, because Telavi likes it about as much as Quinlys and Olveraeth do. "I have some nuts and crackers stashed in my press if you want some, they aren't spicy or anything. No klah if you're not sure. But, Sabs, do you know why, why you fell, I mean? I know you're careful." Her voice drops. "Your straps weren't cut or anything, were they?" "D'kan did come, a few hours before they said I could go. I think he's going to ask J'tor to do the stuff I can't do later in the month." Sabella is disappointed, but, "It's fair." That appears to be a genuine statement, at least. "We didn't talk that much. He was there when they set my arm and then he came to visit me later, but I was asleep." Her voice drops to a lower pitch. "I hit him in the face when they were doing it. I feel bad, he was really nice about everything. You know, for I'zech." She confides. The command to not throw up is followed or at least, maybe she doesn't have the urge to so it doesn't happen. "I love crackers." The comment comes almost as an aside as she switches to her other question. "I... I don't know. I just assumed it was an accident or something I did. I'm going to look at them when I get back to the barracks. Granted no one threw them in a heap or something." "J'tor can go," but Tela doesn't bother with him enough to even put the effort it would take to complete the thought, turning up her rather striking nose instead. Later on, she'll realize just what fun things J'lor will get to do and Sabs won't, but for now, priorities. She listens, now and again repeating bits with glee like hit and in the face! and, a touch more disbelievingly, nice. "I'll remember that the next time he goes slouching around smelling half-drunk and kicking things," only then she has to add, "Or at least I'll try. I heard E'sren was shouting for you, K'zin too, I wasn't anywhere near around," and she sounds guilty about it, too. And if she's stalling about what might or might not have happened to the other weyrling's straps, eventually she circles back around to them, "Be careful, all right? Let me know what you find. Maybe the tanner messed up. Oh, Sabs," but here Tela clamps her mouth shut, no 'what could have happened's for her. At least, as long as her resolve holds out. It doesn't matter where J'tor can go, the start of it makes her laugh a little. She's definitely tired and it shows all over her face right around now. That fellis really does zap a person, maybe that's why they said she needed an escort in the first place. "Oh, just forget I ever told you. I wouldn't bring it up to him, he could get angry. Even if he didn't seem to mind." At the mention of people shouting for her, she's shaking her head. "I heard E'sren, I think. And K'zin who?" That's rhetorical, she knows who he is. But it's not a secret that they haven't spoken to each other in forever either. "Don't feel bad." And then, "Telavi. If it is someone trying to kill me and they succeed next time. You're in charge of giving away all of my stuff. You can keep whatever you want." She cracks a smile at her. "But I'm sure it was just an accident." "If he gets mad at you, I'll hit him." Telavi shows Sabs her fist, flexing, in case the unlikeliness of it all can make even a tired injured drugged-out Sabella laugh again. But then Sabella goes on, and before Tela can even reply to anything else, the rest sinks in and the two moons' light just isn't kind to the way she pales. "That isn't funny." She tightens her arm about her friend as though she could squeeze the very idea out of her. realizes, and loosens her grip with an apologetic pat to Sabella's hip. "Of course it was an accident. Let's get you to the barracks, settle you in, I'll tell anyone who wants to pester you to go away, and there will be crackers." Give her food or give her death! |
