>---< The Glass Fountain, Fort Weyr(#533RJs$) >------------------------------<
Despite its subterranean locale, the creamy wall paint, pale woods, and
frosted glass give the cavern a light, airy feel. Oil lamps reflect softly
in the polished wood of high-backed booths, glimmering through the opaque
glass dividers that help lend intimacy to the seating arrangements;
round-backed booths carved from stone, lined with deep, terra-cotta
colored padding and the addition of strategic, lyric shapes painted in a
subtle red shade. The sweeping, half-circle shaped bar with its top of
smooth stone, backed by cut-glass-fronted cabinetry flows gracefully into
the soft lines and mellow colors that dominate the Glass Fountain.
All the atmosphere aside, the main attractions of the room are clearly the
massive, multi-pronged chandelier that hangs from multiple chains from the
ceiling and the re-worked leak - which no longer resembles a leak at all,
having been channeled through glass to become a beautiful piece of art. A
curving wave and a series of glass bubbles guide the water past a bank of
glows, allowing the light to shine through the water and turn it into a
sparkling fountain. From its dark, dim, shabby history, the Glass Fountain
has become an elegant place with lattice-stands to hold the menus with
their selection ranging from typical 'bar food' to high-end dishes and
fancy desserts. The fourth day of the week still finds the majority of Flint on the ledge that gives them access to booze and cards in the form of Dice, but his second week in both weyr and wing finds X'vin apart from them, not the oppressive force of many wingleaders, but also not the cohesive member, not yet. The Glass Fountain is more his style, for the atmosphere and the selection, and he sits on one of the high-backed stools at the bar with a glass of red wine before him -- Benden, the color is as distinct as the scent, wafting and light. He's perusing some hides, making notes in a book, chewing thoughtfully on the end of his pencil when he stops to think. E'dre wanders into the Fountain without his usual entourage of Hematite riders flanking him. He looks tired, but in better shape than he has in recent days as he makes his way to the bar. He slides in beside X'vin with a nod of greeting. "Whiskey," he tells the barkeep, tapping two fingers on the bar. "And maybe later some water." He scrubs at his face briefly and then glances around the place. Dice must have attracted more than Flint tonight for the Fountain seems relatively quiet. E'dre doesn't seem inclined to chat with X'vin as that whiskey is placed before him and he sips it. It's a good (bad?) thing for E'dre that X'vin's friendly then, isn't it? He removes the pencil from his mouth, inclined to turn because with such an open array of seating, E'dre's chosen the seat beside him. He's briefly sober while he analyzes the older man carefully, parsing through whatever knowledge he has to finally say, "Good evening, E'dre," with a pleasant smile that borders on grin. "I don't think we've officially met. X'vin." "Not official," E'dre counters, taking another few sips of the whiskey in quick succession. An attempt to ease into a social mood? Or numb his mind? Either way, that glass is being slid forward empty and ready for more. "Nice to meet you. Flint treating you well?" he queries, glancing around. "What brought you to the Fountain?" A glance is given to that pencil. "Work?" "Peculiar tastes," the bronzerider provides, poking at his glass with the end of the pencil. There's a meaningful look for E'dre's whiskey as he says, "I never realized how--acidic the vines run on this side of the continent. The wines are, forgive me, terrible. When I was a child it didn't seem so bad, but those years at Benden ruined me. I can barely palate the Tillek wines, anymore." He wraps the book closed and puts the pencil down as he speaks, sure to move them so the text below is unreadable. "I hear Dice has better whiskey, as it were. Why here? I hear it's a party up there." "Wasn't in the mood for a party," E'dre answers easily with a shrug. "Just a small nightcap that wouldn't disturb my family." He considers that wine in front of X'vin. "Benden. I used to have a taste for it. Tillek isn't bad, if you're not sensitive to their tannins." He doesn't seem prepared to pick up his refilled drink as he considers that now unreadable document near the bronzerider. "Dice imports some decent stuff. I don't like going there all that much." He smirks, lifting his gaze back to X'vin. "What can I say? I'm old and not in the mood to have Bitra style games here." He pauses, squinting briefy at him. "Where'd you transfer from again?" "I doubt it has so much to do with age as it does maturity," X'vin says, without any attempt at levity. "It's an odd place for a gambling den. But, most of Flint seems to love it, and I see no point arguing that point when there are so many others to attend." The talk of the wine has him bringing his close, for a swallow that he seems to savor for a moment, though his lips twist in amusement at the question. "Benden," is again meaningful, if gently so, like it should have been inferred. Or like he doesn't believe E'dre doesn't know. "Snobbish," E'dre notes on that meaningfully placed name. No diplomacy over wine, then. He reaches for his whiskey to sip and grimaces briefly with a glance in the direction of the bar. "Hmm," he mutters, rubbing his forefinger at his nose to clear the fumes from the alcohol he inhaled. "Let them gamble," he agrees, "Hematite is probably up there. We'll have an argument or five to settle tomorrow." He glances towards X'vin, testing the bronzerider with his next statement, "Flint has a history of cheating." "Guilty," X'vin admits without contrition. "If I'm allowed one vice, let it be my wine." He'll even toast E'dre with the glass for a second sip, before setting it aside and leaning back on the stool with a knowing sound. "It's been mentioned," he says, carefully. "If T'rev let their vices flourish, well," a heft of one shoulder in a shrug, not committing on whether he did or did not. "Card and dice games are trite, but ultimately harmless. It's when they cheat at in larger things that I'll have a problem." "Hmm," E'dre doesn't sound so sure. He rises, leaving that half-finished whiskey on the table. "I'm interested to see how you fair with them. T'rev was. and Flint can be..," he doesn't elaborate, choosing to wriggle his hand back and forth in place of words. "You're here, right? They are there. Interesting. Truly." He ruffles his fingers through his hair and grins at X'vin. "Enjoy that," he jerks his head at the wine. "While you can. Soon enough, you want something like that? You'll have to import it and keep it in your weyr." He lingers long enough to hear any more remarks the bronzerider may have before he turns and heads back out. "I don't foresee any problems," is perhaps too confident coming from him, fresh as he is to the weyr and people, but X'vin says it all the same. His easy smile doesn't falter for observation, nor does he deign to remark upon it. The facts there, there's nothing to say, but he's very deliberate about moving his hides and books back now that E'dre's eyes can't so easily pry. "I don't foresee the wine being a problem, either, but I appreciate the advice." He's back to his hides, after that, with a tilt of the head to serve as his farewell to the weyrsecond. |
