| Kitchen, High Reaches Weyr Polished marble and granite surfaces, gleaming metalwork and pale woods characterize the vaulted fastness of the kitchen. Several large hearths gape red-mouthed against the outer wall of the cavern, their fires almost always stoked for the constant cooking the Weyr requires to feed its denizens. Sinks line the wall to one side of the hearths, providing ample space to wash large quantities of dishes, while to the other, cabinetry and a deep pantry provide storage space for items commonly needed on a day-to-day basis. The remaining wall space is taken up by passageways and extra seating: swinging doors that lead variously to the main living cavern, the inner caverns and the storage rooms, a counter-height pass-through for food service to the Snowasis, and a series of nooks equipped with tables and benches for quick, out-of-the-way meals any time of day. Not Searched for more then a day and already the new chores have started. Sho is in the kitchens, scrubbing pots and pans and wearing a apron to keep himself from getting soaked. He's elbows deep in a pot at this very moment, scrubbing hard to get stew bits off the side and bottom. K'del looks-- tired, mostly, and distracted, as he passes through the swinging doors that lead in from the Inner Caverns. He makes his way past the eating alcoves and into the kitchen proper, so lost in his own thoughts that it's only when he actually passes right by Sho that he even notices the boy. "Change of career plans?" he wonders, then, coming to a halt. "Dishwashing more interesting than stables?" Sho blinks up from the pot as he hears K'del and glances over his shoulder, smirking at the weyrleader. "Well yeah, ya know sir, I figured why much stables when I c'n just wash dishes instead." Said sarcastically, of course. "Decides, only way I'll ever fit numbweed into yer food." Pause. "No, I actually got Searched yesterday by Liniath." He uses his head to note the knot on his shoulder, the first time he's actually worn a knot since being here. Despite whatever it is that's on K'del's mind, he smiles a thin but not un-amused smile in response to Sho's sarcasm, one that grows steadily more thoughtful and surprised as the candidate continues. "Didn't even notice," he admits, with a bob of his head towards the knot in question. "Congratulations? Good that you're willing to-- well. Anyway. Congratulations." It's clearly an exercise in positive thinking. Sho nods to the Weyrleader, "Thanks sir." He says...though the last bit has him narrowing his eyes slightly, pulling his hands out of the pot all soapy and wet to turn and face the weyrleader. "Good that I'm willing ta what?" He asks, having a feeling he knows where this is going, and not about to be happy about it. Promptly; "Take the chance. Set yourself up for possible disappointment." It may not be precisely what K'del had originally been saying, but he seems to genuinely believe this, too. Mostly, though, his expression is rueful. "Sorry; it's been kind of a day. Week. Longer. Honestly: congratulations. Hope one of those eggs really does contain something special for you." Sho is quiet for a moment after K'del finishes, his hands still dripping and soapy. Finally, he says, "They're all gonna hatch, and they're gonna be normal. Whether'r not one'a them chooses me doesn't matter. It'll be good fer the Weyr no matter what." He says, then sighs and turns back to the pot. "Yeah, I know the feeling. Weather changes again ta snow an' I got cranky. And this was all kind of'a rush too." Sho finishes scrubbing the pot and drains the soapy water, then rinses it out before turning back to K'del. "Were ya looking for something?" He asks now, drying his hands on his apron. K'del considers for a moment, then nods; if his expression is anything to go by, he seems to find something positive in Sho's opinion on matters. "Positive. Good," is his assessment. "Always a surprise, the Search thing. Guess some people expect it, or ask to Stand, or whatever, but-- it was a shock for me, too. Changed things." Of the weather, he makes no comment, but there's another nod in there: perhaps that's his agreement. "Anyway," he continues, looking rueful again. "Actually-- I need something sweet right about now. Desperately. Don't ask." The youth actually smirks at K'del and nods, "Yeah, it was a surprise. I had ta ask a few times ta make sure. I mean...I'm kinda the last person I expected ta be asked ta Stand. I don't really see me as a rider. But I trust Liniath, so I guess if she says so..." Shrug. As for the sweets, Sho just nods and motions for the weyrleader to follow him. A quick glance around ensures no cooks are nearby before Sho uncovers a plate full of different sweets. A grinning Sho winks at K'del, "I hid 'em for after I got outta here, but I don't mind sharin'." Follow K'del does, silent until, laughing, "Should've /known/ you'd be prepared for this." He's teasing, at least in part, but that makes him no less grateful for it: it's his first proper, unrestrained smile since he entered the kitchens. Leaning up against a convenient hard surface, he takes a sugar cookies, adding, before he even manages to take a bite, "Didn't you say your father was a rider? Does run in the family sometimes, I think. But-- yeah. Good for Liniath. Guess maybe we won't be sending you off to a craft hall after all." "Eggs haven't hatched yet." Sho reminds K'del, setting the plate down and pulling off his apron, hanging it on a nearby peg. "If I don't Impress then I c'n probably go to the Wood Craft, cause I'll be old enough then." The boy looks over the plate and picks out a pastry with jam inside and frosting on top, taking a bite happily and letting out a soft sigh of pleasure. "My dad and my Uncle both." Sho confirms with a nod. "Never really thought I'd even have a shot though, ya know? Not really something you expect." "Point taken," allows K'del, once he's finished chewing his first bite of cookie. "Still. Sounds like you've got a plan all worked out-- good for you." He seems genuinely approving in this, in a laid-back kind of way; this is definitely K'del-the-person and not K'del-the-Weyrleader talking. "Guess maybe it isn't. Know it wasn't for me, but then, there's no riders in my family as all, far back as I know. And it being Interval... guess there's fewer people that get the chance, too. Though there'll be other clutches while you're still of an age, if it comes to that." Sho shrugs again at the weyrleader, taking another bite of his pastry and chewing it thoughtfully. "Yeah, there will be if I get Searched again I guess. Dunno though, really not entirely sure on how the whole thing works, honestly." Smirk. "Never thought it could happen, so didn't even really talk about it or anything." He admits, taking another bite. At the first part of K'del's approval, Sho actually smiles nice and genuine like. "Thanks sir, good ta hear that. Glad someone thinks I'm not just a kid without a plan."
Sho grabs a nearby stool and sits on it next to where K'del is leaning, grabbing the plate of sweets and offering it to him again. "So 'nough about me for now, yeah? What's got you all bothered? I don't think I've really seen ya like this before." The boy licks his lips to get a few remnant bits of jam off of them, and then his fingers, and looks down at the plate again to try and decide on what to have next. Decisions decisions. He really did steal quite a good variety. K'del takes something more gooey, this time, and licks his fingers after transferring it from one hand to the other. The troubled look returns to his expression at Sho's question, and he's silent for a long couple of moments, apparently debating the best way to answer. "It's-- honestly, I'd rather not talk about it right now, if you don't mind. Personal stuff." He manages something of a smile, half-hearted though it is. "Usually, I'd just go and have a drink. Or more than one. But... feels like that'd be a bad idea. So." He lifts his hand, the one holding his dessert. "Sugar." The Candidate seems a bit surprised by K'dels words, but he nods. "I'm not here ta pry sir, but if ya wanna talk I c'n certainly listen." He offers, deciding on a cocoa cookie next and biting into it. Yummy. He lets out a soft sigh, "They really do have some'a the best food here." He says contentedly. K'del's expression is appreciative, and he nods. "And maybe, at some point-- eh. Don't know at this point. But at the very least, you've given me sugar, and that's making a big difference right about now." He accentuates the point by taking a large bite out of his confectionary, adding, once he's chewed enough to be able to form words, "Totally do, don't they? Those bakers. Never had anything like this when I was growing up." Sho rolls his eyes at K'del, "Did ya grow up at a runner hold? Lemme tell ya, you haven't had the worst food ever until ya eat nothing but tubers and vegetables for just about every meal." He says while taking another bite of cookie. He looks around the kitchen then, eyes falling back on the pots and pans he finished cleaning before he hrms softly..."Don't s'pose you can just get me on Stable duty while I'm a candidate?" He asks semi-hopefully. K'del looks amused, admitting, "Not a runner hold, but a vineyard - and my mother had strict ideas about what constituted a proper diet." His gaze follows Sho's, and his expression is sympathetic. "'fraid not. Apprentices we can usually keep to their usual jobs, because we want them to stick with their careers, if possible. But-- doesn't work quite so well for the rest of you, unfortunately." He finishes the rest of his confection with a glee that would be more suitable to one younger than him, licking his fingers once it's all gone. Then; "I should get back to things. Can't mope around forever. Thanks for the sugar, Sho, and-- good luck." The boy grumbles again, "The stables are gonna go ta hell." Sho says with a sad shake of his head. Oh well. As K'del gets ready to go Sho nods, offering a mock salute. "Thank you sir. you too. If ya need anything I can help with just lemme know." He offers. /That/ makes K'del laugh, but not, apparently maliciously. "Appreciate it, Sho. Look after yourself." And then he leaves-- but not before swiping another cookie from the plate. Just in case. |
