| Storerooms, High Reaches Weyr Massive in scale, the Weyr's main storage passage connects to the kitchen on one end and the outbound tunnel on the other. Large enough to admit a wagon laden with goods, the tunnel easily permits the unloading and organization of supplies into the various storerooms. Branching off from this corridor are multiple caverns, the nearer two being 'open' stores from which residents can readily help themselves, while the deeper stores are kept locked up tight with a posted sign and inventory hung on a hook outside of each. An alcove next to the public stores serves as a catch-all area for reshelving items whose destination is uncertain; two sets of stone shelving and several bins hold these items neatly until a stores assistant has a moment to deal with them. Though the storage caverns vary in size, shape, and the smoothness of their walls, all belong to the same system: whitewashed walls, swept floors, and most importantly, neatly labeled and inventoried shelves providing ample space to stow all the supplies a busy Weyr needs. Though there's no direct internal lighting, a glowbasket may be brought in from the niche outside each cavern, the better to ward off pests and the inky dark of deep caves. A winter afternoon with unpleasant weather means that the stores are fairly busy - every indoor errand that's been put off seems to be a good idea when the snow is coming down, wet and heavy. Aishani has been as often out of Weyr as in it of late, but that might not strike anyone as particularly shocking, though the relative quiet might be worrying to some. The goldrider has managed to keep out of the way and out of trouble. She's even doing her job, which is what presumably has her coming from from the depths of the store rooms, but who really knows? Madilla's not been a terribly present figure, these recent months, since she (and H'kon) adopted some distant relation of Leova's and became parents to a traumatised toddler; she's been scarce even for those visiting the infirmary. Amidst the bustle of the stores, she's as calm as ever, paying others no particular attention as, with a pile of child-sized clothes in hand, she strides determinedly down through the caverns. Even so, she's got a smile for Aishani as the goldrider comes into view. "I think everyone's wishfully thinking about spring fashion," she remarks, the kind of comment that could easily be meant in passing only. Each may not have even noticed the other's relative absence. If Aishani has, she doesn't mention it as she returns Madilla's smile, if briefly, and with a faintly wry twist. "It gets a little old, I think, slogging through mud and wet," she notes, steps slowing. "I don't blame anyone for deciding to look for new clothes today. Or drop off old ones." There's a nod to the children's clothing in the healer's hand, before she notices a smudge of dirt on one sleeve; with a grimace, she tries to rub it off. Gaze following Aishani's, Madilla's own mouth twists at sight of that smudge, that grimace. "Time for a not-actually-spring clean down the back?" she wonders, her own steps slowing to more or less a halt. "I suspect most of the Weyr wouldn't mind escaping somewhere warm and sunny, at this point. Winter has definitely lost any appeal it had, a few months back. Personally, I think I'd rather be curled up in front of the hearth than trying to find more winter clothes in the right sizes for growing children, but..." Her shrug, at least, is easy: she chose this life. "Oh," Aishani looks back over her shoulder to the more dimly-lit caverns, glossy curls free of dust at least. "It might be an idea. It's just good to keep an eye on things. Make sure no one's using the empty rooms for anything untoward." If her tone is threaded with some dry amusement, well. She shrugs a touch, then eyeing the clothing again. "I suppose that's not something you can really send your apprentices to do. Though it could be sold as some sort of child-growth study, who knows." The point is, Shani wouldn't do it. Why should Madilla have to? Madilla's laugh is low and amused. "'I need clothes for an under-sized three-turn-old, an average-sized nearly-seven-turn-old, and a picky nearly-eleven-turn-old. Go.' It would be interesting to see how well they managed the sizing, wouldn't it?" Having said that, however, the healer doesn't necessarily seem to believe that Aishani will find it interesting, and so, "I always forget how many rooms there really are down there. I suspect it would be easy to, well. Do all kinds of things down there and never be noticed. Empty weyrs, too. People are very unobservant, sometimes." Flashing a grin, "That's more or less what I was thinking. It would be interesting enough to evaluate, and allows you to save yourself some time. Not that I mind running into you, Madilla." Aishani seems sincere about that at least, though she's giving the remnants of dust on her sleeve a frown. "The weyrlingmasters ought to go on regular patrols around here, honestly. And people tend to be... or, at least, caught up with their own concerns. It's my way to observe." With a glance around, "It's my way to keep an eye on things here too. Not that there's shortages now, but..." There have been. Might be. "I may have to give it a try. I suspect Jinja would probably see it as a treat, to be honest. Teenage girls and clothes, honestly." Madilla's exasperation is good-natured. "Nor I, you. Though it would be nice to be able to have lunch in my break, sometimes." The healer's nod is slow and just short of thoughtful. "But once there have been shortages, people's memories are long. We don't want people hoarding, just in case." Curiously, "Do they like clothes for anyone other than themselves, though? I suppose dressing up kids might be 'cute'..." Aishani herself doesn't really think so, by her little shudder, but she's never been enthused about children anyway. Sliding hands into her pockets, "You let me know if you have a lunch sometime soon. And indeed, there's the hoarding and... I'll never trust any tallies I don't check myself. That's nothing against anyone's work, just..." Another of her shrugs. "There's some things that you have to check on yourself? It doesn't entirely make sense." Madilla's smile is wry. "Jinja will take any excuse to haunt stores, I think, especially during work time. It won't be her fault if she just happens to find something perfect for herself while she does the rest." This doesn't seem to bother the healer, at least; she's resigned to her apprentice, perhaps even amused by her. "I'll do that." Her mouth parts, smile twisting outward as she agrees, "No, I understand that entirely. I do it myself, with the healer supplies. It's... just good practice, I think. No surprises." Shani has a look around the busy stores, allowing a smirk. "She doesn't seem to be the only one. I'm sure half the errands people are sent on are sidetracked by just going to check on something, just in case." Not that she seems to begrudge anyone that by her tone - she's never been one to crack the whip. Folding her arms and leaning against a shelf (after checking on its state of cleanliness), she nods slowly. "I wouldn't want to miss something. I couldn't... well. There's technical responsibility and feeling responsible." Shaking her head a little over that, she asks, "Are things well with you? I assume I would have heard if otherwise, but..." "Well, you never know what treasures someone might have abandoned to stores just today..." Madilla seems amused by that, for all that her eyes roll merrily; it's not a habit she is especially prone to. "I understand that, too. I... things are well enough, yes. It's been a difficult few months, in some ways, but I think we're turning the corner. Families," she concludes, "can be complicated things, though I suppose you know that well enough. How are you, Aishani?" "For the amount of time some people wait for things to turn up in stores by chance, most might as well just save the marks and buy it themselves." Aishani might have a point, but she also probably has more marks than most people haunting the stores. She listens to Madilla, dark eyes thoughtful - but she nods at families, though with something closer to a warm smile than usual. "Indeed. Though I've been trying to spend some time reacquainting myself with my family of late. It helps if Jyani wants to stay and... it's better than the alternatives. So I'm well, I suppose." She does have to add wryly, "Keeping myself out of the way." Though Madilla smiles at that first remark, she apparently has nothing to add to the point; instead, it's that second point she answers, having given a nod of her own. "I've had to give thought to my own family, the one that isn't here at the Weyr, these past months, and that's been... more difficult than I expected. I wish you all the luck, with yours." The wryness of Aishani's last remark has the healer's mouth twisting again, and another nod - slow and deliberate - acknowledging the point. "I can imagine. I should turn these in, before my break ends," the clothes are indicated with her hand. "But... we'll catch up over lunch soon, I hope?" Taking a moment to consider difficulties, Aishani tilts her head, tucking an errant curl behind her ear. "Luck to you as well. But just know... it can take time, but making the effort..." She seems to think it's worth it. "It can be lonely otherwise." If she's concerned her remark might have bothered Madilla, she doesn't show it as she pushes out of her lean. "It can be so difficult to keep busy. But never for healers, I suppose. I'd like that - I'll try to stop by the infirmary soon and see if you can get away." She has a little wave before she starts to move off in the direction of the kitchens. Presumably official again. |
