Meara was beginning to feel her age.

Oh - it had been coming for a while. The stiffness and the aches were old friends, now; she'd become accustomed to their almost permanent presence during that last weyrling class, and now it seemed like life without them was an unlikely dream.

The respite between groups had been a welcome one. When Ysavaeth had risen again so soon after her first flight, she'd felt quiet panic... and quiet relief, amidst her horror and uncertain surprise, when the clutch was lost. Rielsath's flight had not come unexpectedly, but the prospect of this new group was an exhausting one.

The eggs would be on the sands in the next seven or two, and then it would be only a few short sevens until there was a new clutch to worry about. A small one, likely, but still: another turn of full-on training.

As long as Hraedhyth and Iesaryth take their time, she reminded herself, it will be fine. As long as their flights aren't too close together.

But what was the likelihood of that?

No - if there were going to be clutches that overlapped, she was going to need another weyrlingmaster. One weyrlingmaster per clutch; that seemed the only way to do it. A senior and a junior, and assistants to share between them.

In time, she would probably need a replacement.

And of her assistants... Quinlys was too young, too inexperienced. Too easily made awkward. She had potential, but it was just too soon. Val... no. Lina? J'vain was too old, and his missing arm just made things more awkward. The truth was, she didn't think any of them were ready.

P'vand's interest in transferring to High Reaches had been timely, then: an experienced assistant, solid and trustworthy. He wasn't committed, yet - he was still thinking it over - but it seemed like an ideal solution. She could put him through his paces with Rielsath's clutch, and if all went well he'd be ready to step up as soon as it became necessary.

Perhaps in a few turns, Quinlys would be more ready to be his 'second. Or perhaps, by then, there would be someone else.

Meara stretched. With luck, she'd have the opportunity to retire while she and Isath still had life left in them.

Wouldn't that be wonderful?
