>---< Candidate Quarters, High Reaches Weyr(#286RAJ) >-----------------------<

Two caverns lead one right into the other from a hallway just off the
Common Room. Taking advantage of the high, vaulted ceiling, bunk beds
march in five neat rows of five beds each allowing up to fifty people to
sleep in one cavern, although one of those caverns is presently largely
closed off. Functional and spartan in atmosphere, there's little in the
way of decoration here, just the one tapestry depicting a hatching on the
wall of the first cavern and eggs on the sands in the second.

Each bunk is made up when there are candidates in residence, with standard
sheeting, gray woollen blankets and somewhat lumpy pillows. A trunk stands
at both the head and foot of the bunks, providing a little space for the
occupants to store their belongings while the wait for the eggs to hatch.
The archway between the two spaces is covered over with a hide hanging,
easily hooked back when both caverns are in use, but tacked into place
when only the first is needed. A proper wooden door closes out noise and
  drafts from the hallway.

On the top bunk of one of the end sets, Keysi is sitting up ontop of a neatly made bed of the quite-militant and bland grey blankets and lumpy pillows. Indian-style crossed legs and slightly hunched back, she's focused on something in front of her, on closer inspection that being a scroll of something from the infirmary. But it can also be noted that her attention keeps getting drawn away by two other candidates on the other side of the room who can't agree on who gets the clothing trunk in front of the bunk versus the back. Most of their words are quiet, but occassionally, the flustered blonde stomps her foot and raises a hand in her hushed demands. The healer-candidate, though not showing it well of course, appears somewhat entertained by all the commotion.

Edyis twirls a lock around her finger, her other hand over the strap attached to her duffel. She's whistling as she goes, unperturbed by the arguing candidates, but rather just shaking her head at them with a snort. Swish, swish, swish, goes the lock dark eyes looking for an available bunk.

Only a brief glance is awarded to another candidate entering into the room. But then.. double-take. Keysi sets down her reading material to kind of.. stare for a moment, perhaps unnervingly so. Did she take a wrong turn? Drunk? Confused? Given the duffle bag, perhaps none of the above. "..Edyis?" Keys raises her hand to motion for her attention.

Edyis dark eyes lift, and the lock stops. "Yes." She draws the vowel out as her gaze rests on the healer apprentice. "Oh Hi!" Recognizing the healer with an abashed grin. "Rasavyth has a twisted sense of humor apparently, K'zin said he wanted me to stand. You might say I have accepted that the universe is conspiring against me at this point, so I got permission from Irianke."

Keysi sets her papers down on her pillows and shifts to be able to face her better. Though, no matter how pleased she may be about this, she still looks like a perched hawk glaring at the world below. "It took you long enough." Dry humor, but it's there. "What did Rasavyth say? And I don't doubt that. I'm sure plenty of people want you to stand." She included, though she already announced that before. "I am sure there are a few who don't." She replies, chuckling. "I don't know what exactly he said, K'zin just relayed the message." She sets the duffel down on the bunk below. "I'm not sure I still don't wish I was back with the trader caravans and learning the ropes. I guess, Reaches isn't quite ready to relinquish her grip on me just yet but who knows." She moves to one of the trunks lifting the lid to see if it's in use and testing the hinges and the locks.

Keysi shrugs off her first reply with little more than a slight shake of her head. "There's a lot to learn.." Her volume becomes a bit more quiet, though her tone, as usual, remains the same. "You will have to tell me the stories you have, though. It's always an experience out there. But this is one, too." Even if she's seen it all before. "Thank Faranth you're here, though." Is mumbled as she raises a hand to indicate the two blondes who had switched from arguing to silent fuming, "I was starting to wonder who might end up in this bunk with me."

"Candidacy isn't so bad," Edyis answers, opening the duffel, once she's satisfied with the trunk, she begins neatly unpacking her clothing. "It is only because we are friends that I'm not going to fight you for the top bunk." The former scribe chimes in with a dashing smile. "Gold egg, means probably means three times as many girls as usual." Edyis surmises, wrinkling her nose as she gently packs away a patchwork skirt and pale green tunic.

Keysi yawns, nodding as she does so and belatedly moving to cover it with the back of a hand. "Aye. The chores are certainly things I am not used to." She would call them skills, but after trying to go work a shortened shift in the infirmary after helping to clean up the feeding grounds, it wasn't the most beneficial sequence of events. "We could anyway." Is her returned challenge, and then adds "Mm.. I figured as much." Speaking of.. "Did the weyrwoman say anything in particular about you standing, or just to do it already?"

Edyis bites her lower lip. "She said to consider the possibility of Igen, should I impress blue or green. Not that she would ask, nor that it would be forced on me. Just to consider it, and the possibility." She tilts her head then. "Have you met Zadkiel? He was searched from Igen."

Keysi hesitates, but then nods, seeming resolved on the subject. "Aye, I spoke to K'del for a long time the other day about all those.. things. Have you ever been there? I've been close, but not quite to the Hold or Weyr proper." The healer rubbed the back of her neck, but however she feels about the transfer topic is now well-sealed. She considers the name for a moment before shaking her head, "I don't believe so, though perhaps just not by name. Is he decent?"

"I have been to the desert a few times, and Farideh is from Igen. She's blooded, believe it or not." The scribe comments thoughtfully as she tucks away the last of the clothing and a few other personal items before fishing the hairpin out of her hair and starting to work on the lock. It doesn't take long, almost as though she has the trick of it memorized. Once the trunk is locked, she tugs the patchwork quilt from the bag and spreads it over the lower cot. Only after she is satisfied does she climb the foot of the bed to peer at Keysi. "He's interesting. Intense." She chooses.

"I like the individual flare." Keysi dry voice offers as she watches the quilt spread over the neutral non-color that it was before. "Really? I guess that particular topic never came up. She certainly gave me the best welcome to the Weyr I could have anticipated however many months ago that was now." There's some sort of intended humor to that. Time does go by fast. "Intense? Hmm.. There's a lot of new faces, I've lost track. Sounds like somebody I'd like to get to know something about." Is admitted as she lays down closer to the edge of the bed so that she can still peer downwards. Hopefully not too awkwardly.

Edyis chuckles, "My sisters and my stepmother made it one year for my turnday. It was in a box stored safely for a while... but it reminds me of where I have come from." She smirks, "Which probably sounds stupid and cheesy, but hey when you decide to do stupid things like standing in front of rampaging hatchlings, what's a little cheese between friends?" Right? Right. She settles down now, sprawling over the cot to test her work. "He seems pretty interesting, yeah." She sighs deeply then. "So I have to ask now. Why did you say yes to being searched?"

"Sounds important, not cheesy." The healer corrects, seeming quite set on it. "Tokens are irreplaceable. I have one or two. I always keep them with me." The severity of her correction is perhaps softened by that. The adjective of rampaging gives her pause. She's never actually seen a hatching. And the moment of silence continues given the question. "It's complicated." Is all she seems willing to give at first, but as she rolls over and stares at the stone ceiling, she continues slowly, "I may be right back in the infirmary where I left off when this is all over. But if I'm not, there will be so many skills to learn.. So much that I don't even know that I don't know. And someone.." She stops, not really finding the words. "I don't know." She adjusts at the end, as if it's her 'final answer.' It's difficult, trending to painful, trying to open up to someone, even to a friend. "Why did you say yes?"

Edyis smiles, at the correction, peering over the edge of the cot. "It isn't as bad as I make it sound by the way, just stay out of their way and it's all good. Really." Staring at the wood slats of the cot above the scribe shrugs, thoughtful. "Habit?" She starts then frowns. "Morbid curiosity? This will be the last time. Whatever the outcome."
