>---< Kitchen, High Reaches Weyr(#267RJs) >----------------------------------<
Polished marble and granite surfaces, gleaming metalwork and pale woods
characterize the vaulted fastness of the kitchen. Several large hearths
gape red-mouthed against the outer wall of the cavern, their fires almost
always stoked for the constant cooking the Weyr requires to feed its
denizens. Sinks line the wall to one side of the hearths, providing ample
space to wash large quantities of dishes, while to the other, cabinetry
and a deep pantry provide storage space for items commonly needed on a
day-to-day basis.
The remaining wall space is taken up by passageways and extra seating:
swinging doors that lead variously to the main living cavern, the inner
caverns and the storage rooms, a counter-height pass-through for food
service to the Snowasis, and a series of nooks equipped with tables and
benches for quick, out-of-the-way meals any time of day.

Living Cavern Inner Caverns Storerooms
>-----------------------------------------< 13D 1M 37T I10, winter night >---< The dinner rush is over, but there are still a few fires going and food available if you know where to look. The scent of hot stew, roasting meat, and fresh klah permeates the air. The weather might explain why some choose to claim the nooks in the kitchens instead of braving the colder areas of the weyr. Edyis herself has laid claim to her usual table, book in one hand and the other is wrapped in compressive bandages and holding a meat roll. Schuyler had been cleaning up from the evening meal and doing a bit of prepwork for the morning. His sleeves are rolled up to the elbow and his black pants are smudged with some flour. He is certainly one to know where the available food is, as well of the best nooks. With a plate laden with food and a mug full of klah, he searches the nooks for a good place to have his meal. "Any room for some company?" he asks, coming upon Edyis at her table. A break in shifts was always an excuse to embark on an endeavor to replace some calories lost running around the infirmary and storages. The direction of the storerooms were the direction Keysi would appear, shoulders tense from passing through the Bowl briefly to check a count on an item or two before slipping into the warmed, welcoming nooks near the kitchens. A plate is piled with slices of the remaining roasted meat, and the largest mug available is filled to its brim with the flavorful and, most importantly, steaming klah. Grey eyes briefly survey over those remaining, and just happen to note a recently met face being joined by one not quite met. "Might I join as well?" chilly, even toned voice inquires. Edyis is in the middle of absently trying to bite into her roll, so when dark eyes peer at the rather large boy she furrows her brow a moment but consents with a nod. Then just laughs when the apprentice healer asks as well. "I am starting to think this place isn't as much of a well kept secret as I thought." Tilting her head to study the both of them and closing the book. "How are you settling in Keysi?" Schuyler offers a cheerful smile and takes a seat at the table. "Not so much a secret, especially at this time of night. I tend to be a bit later so these nooks have emptied out a bit by then." he glances at the other girl and offers her a smile as well, shifting over to make room at the table for her. "New here?" he asks with a low rumble as he starts to tuck in to his dinner. "Or perhaps your whiskey in a clean glass is having an impact on your popularity rating." Keysi says dryly, but it certainly would seem to be sarcastic enough to be a joke. "I haven't done much besides sleep a few hours and run back to help a patient with some physical therapy since we spoke last." A shrug is given, "Though I'm learned the way to warm food quickly enough." An awkwardly large size piece of roast is taken as a bite, followed by an equally awkward moment of silence as she works on swallowing before preparing a response for Schuyler. "Aye," She swallows, gulping down a bit of klah to chase, "Keysi. Just arrived a bit over a sevenday ago, I suppose. And yourself?" "True enough I suppose." Edyis assents, lifting her cider mug to her lips. Fortunately, Keysi's commentary on her drink mixing comes after the mug is set back down, and thus Edyis does not choke on her own laughter. "Sorry to hear you've been busy though. Or maybe I'm not if you enjoy that sort of thing?" She watches the pair of them eat with a sort of clinical curiosity. Schuyler glances between the two girls as the joke passes between them and over his head. He reaches out a slightly rough hand in Keysi's direction. "Schuyler. You can call me Sky if you'd like." he glances in Edyis's direction as well. "Don't think I've managed to catch your name yet either. Though the pretty face is one I recognize." he smiles and offers a hand to her as well. "You can call me Sky too." he winks. Back towards Keysi, "And any time you need something at an odd hour you let me know. Been here my whole life and I know where they store the good stuff." he grins. A dismissive hand is lifted briefly as she responds to Edyis's apology for her workload, "If I'm not busy, then I'm wasting my time and others'." Keysi's rather intense observative stare returns to Schuyler, and the previously lifted hand reaches to catch his offered one in a firm greeting. "Well met, Sky. I will keep that in mind." She paused, as if not really sure how to reply to the offer, "These are my favorite hours. I'm guessing you're haunting the caverns later than the rush rather often?" She leans back a little instead of haunching starvingly over her plate to take a few more sips of drink. That the scribe turned bartender perks at the mention of "good stuff" is probably quite telling, but that seems to have earned the boy more attention that the attempt at flirting has. Of course Keysi's words also bring a slow spreading grin to Edyis's lips. "Edyis, and I think I've heard your name a time or two." She admits to Sky, falling into silence as the meat roll is gobbled. Schuyler's handshake is firm. "Nice to meet you." he smiles down at her. "Aye. I generally work the dinner rush so I'm eating my own dinner a bit later." he catches Edyis's perk up and chuckles a bit. "Either of you are welcome to come by after dinner and I'll help you find some...dessert. If that's what you're after. I personally specialize in the baked goods. Rolls, cakes cookies, those kinds of things." he stuffs a few more mouthfuls of food in. "I imagine that's quite a bit of work with this many people to feed." Keysi noted, letting her gaze drift for a few moments to see who else is still lingering after dinner, "How are supplies over winters? Or is the staff so used to blizzards that you're always well stocked for everyone's needs?" Perhaps overly stuck on factual things, the offer of more food to one with such a bottomless pit of a stomach certainly doesn't go unheard. "What's your favorite sweets?" The last question is asked of the both of them. "I miss sweets with the grain shortage going on. I hear they are training apprentices in some new low flour methods though..." She interjects between bites and drinks from her mug. Mostly listening. Edyis has to think a moment about the sweets question, "There's this roll, it's got sort of a sweet, spicy taste to it, and they coat it in icing. Best fresh out of the oven. Haven't had one in ages." Schuyler nods at Edyis, "Yeah, there's been a shortage lately, but there are some alternatives available that aren't so bad." he grins over at Keysi, "Baklavah is one of my favorites." he glances at Edyis. "A cinnamon roll? I think I could make that happen, I could try with a nut flour instead of wheat." he thinks. "I'd have to see what we have though." At that moment one of the women from the kitchen comes over to the table. "Sky? Would you be a dear and lug the extra tubers into the store room so they don't go bad?" he nods. "Sorry to dash ladies. Come find me when you're in need of a treat." he winks and follows the kitchen lady out. "I don't really eat sweets." Keysi admits after a few moments or two. Perhaps that would explain her weird hesitation with Sky's offer a bit ago, and why she waited for him to be called back to the kitchens before saying so. "But I'm always hungry." A slight curl at the edge of her lips suggests perhaps something along the lines of a mildly sheepish grin, though hard to tell. "How is the medicine treating you, by the way? Not too drowsy I hope?" |
