Craft Complex, High Reaches Weyr

A passageway hewn into the rock and heavily patched with cement leads a short distance in to the bowl wall, with a door on either side. Aside from the light of regularly spaced glowlamps, the walls are bare, with just a coating of whitewash to cover the otherwise uneven layers of stone and cement. To the left of the entranceway, just a single step inside, a spiral staircase opens out of the wall, leading upwards through the stone. There's a door on either side of the corridor, staggered by a few feet, and at the end of the corridor there's another staircase hewn from the stone, leading upwards to the residential corridor, as well as a door that leads off into bathing facilities. One final door leads into a short corridor containing a few more residential apartments.

The door leading to the east opens into an expansive room that seems to provide both a general working space with long, bare benches and chairs, and what will probably be a cozy lounge once it gets more than a single fuzzy armchair. Three tall windows carved into the stone offer air and light when the heavy wooden shutters are left open, though the lounge area has to make do mostly with glows. A hearth at the back of the room provides both heat and basic cooking facilities. The western door leads into another passage, off of which the main workrooms have been built. The loading dock is to the northern end, leading back out into the bowl, with the rest of the rooms leading deeper and deeper into the wall.

It's been a busy few days for the weyr's crafters, who are, at long last, moving in to their new quarters and workrooms. That didn't stop Madilla from catching Sho at dinner last night, though, and inviting him to come and get a look, if he was interested, after work today. It's damp, but not too chilly, when the appointed hour rolls around. The healer stands just at the boulder-shaped entrance to the complex, sans (for once) baby, but looking undeniably tired nonetheless.

Madilla doesn't have to wait long as Sho can be seen coming up from the weyr to the brand new Crafter Complex. Sho is slow to approach at first, taking in the new creation that is the Crafter area with some intrigue...and for once walking, not running. He's wearing a jacket to ward off the cold and his lower-back length hair hangs down outside in it's normal runner tail, making him an interesting sight. Finally he looks over and spies Madilla, taking a hand out to wave to her as he hurries his steps to reach her. "Hello Madilla." He says with a grin, using her name instead of the normal 'ma'am'. He's trying to get used to it. "How are ya today?"

Madilla's already-present smile turns brighter as Sho remembers to use his name, and she waves him inside; "Let's get out of the rain before it gets any worse." She leads the way in through the passage, down to the main corridor that makes up the entranceway to the complex. As she walks, she answers, cheerfully enough, "I'm well, thank you. We had a good morning." Work-wise? Relating to her daughter? She doesn't specify. "What about you? Stables doing all right?" And, "What do you want to see? Anything in particular?"

Sho nods to Madilla at the suggestion to go inside and follows her in, his grin remaining pleasantly in place as his head swivles back and forth to get a good look at everything. As she starts talking again, Sho turns his focus to her. "The stables are fine. One of the runners is pregnant and might give birth any day now, so that's exciting." At least to him it is. As for what he wants to see...the youth shrugs, "I dunno really. I just came to see the new place. What do you think? Do you have a new place here?" He asks curiously, eyes turning to start looking around again as they walk.

"Oh, that /is/ exciting," declares Madilla, firmly. "New life always is, I think. I may be a little biased, though." She considers for a moment, as they walk, then turns towards one of the doors, opening it, and beckoning Sho through. "I have a room, but that's not terribly exciting. And then there are the workrooms. This, though, this is the main room: lounge, general work room, public space." It's pretty empty, though, still: it'll probably be comfortable, eventually, but for now... well. Not yet.

And Sho isn't afraid to mention the obvious. The wonders of youth. "It seems a little...barren." He comments unthinkingly after he walks through the door. A pause, then he quickly turns to Madilla, "I mean, not that that's bad. It's still nice." He quickly corrects, smiling innocently. He turns back around then to look around some more, "Yeah, still nice."

Madilla holds back a laugh, covering her mouth with her hand. It's not quite enough to stop it altogether, and a woman working over by one of the windows glances up, raising an eyebrow. Pink-cheeked, Madilla admits, in a low voice, "No, you're quite right: it's terribly barren. It'll improve in time. I was thinking about making a quilt for the wall, and perhaps some of the other crafters-- between us, we'll fit it all out. Do you want to see my favourite part of the whole place?"

At the laugh Sho ducks his head, reaching around to grab the tail end of his runner-tail'd hair and start picking at it nervously, staring at it until Madilla speaks. Only then does he look up and smile a get, still a little embarassed. "I...uh...I might be able to find something to add too, I dunno." He offers a little uncertainly. Finally, at the offer for a little more exploration, he nods and releases his hair, "Yes ma...dilla." He quickly catches himself. "That'd be neat."

Madilla looks genuinely pleased, smiling both warmly and encouragingly in Sho's direction. "If you wanted to, I imagine you would be most welcome. I think it's going to be a real collaboration, you know? A group of people making their home into something they're happy with. I imagine none of us have really ever had such a clean slate to work from before, you know?" She tips her head back towards the door, beckoning Sho on. Instead of going down the corridor towards the workrooms, she heads straight up the narrow, winding staircase that leads out onto a ledge above: to the Greenhouse.

Greenhouse, High Reaches Weyr

A rustic and unadorned vestibule leads in from hewn spiral steps to a refitted ledge, enclosed by limestone pillars. Sturdy wooden framework captures elongated glass panes, tilted to absorb the most light during the day. The wash of heat from within, lush and humid, persists even into the dead of winter; the air is heady with the scent of fresh-turned soil and various flora.

Long, deep troughs of soil line the inner stone wall, planted with an assortment of broad, leafy tropicals - practical and decorative alike. Fruit and vegetable baskets hang from rafters, optimizing space, tempting in reach with a perpetually ripening harvest. A series of stone shelving is devoted to flourishing, aromatic herbs and new green shoots; even the softest touch releases a burst of savory scent from tender leaves. Amidst the greenery, a handful of wooden benches have been scattered, making this a temptingly warm and secluded spot to sit.

Shuttered vents serve to regulate humidity and heat given off from a small hot spring recessed into an alcove at the back; a secondary pool with cooler waters siphons off to provide a constant, fresh supply for irrigation. A small potting station nearby is cluttered with watering cans and gardening tools of various uses, with a wooden bin for composting materials tucked underneath.

Sho considers Madilla's words as he follows her, ideas running through his head on what he could donate. It is a crafter hall after all, and he /is/ a crafter of sorts, working in the stables. A thoughtful look falls over his face as he enters the greenhouse, so preoccupied in his thoughts that he doesn't pay attention to his surroundings. His face takes on an almost peaceful look as he's so deep in thought, much different from his normal trouble making self.

As Sho enters the Greenhouse, Madilla shuts the door behind the two of them. For the moment, the place is deserted, and many of the plants still have a long way to go before being productive, but there's enough greenery to give a good indication of what the place will look like. And the view? Spectacular. The healer pauses, watching Sho, looking amused. "And this," she says, finally, "is my favourite place in the complex. Probably in the whole weyr, even." And it's /warm/. So.

The warmth begins to seep in through Sho's thick jacket and that, along with Madilla actually speaking, brings him out of his thoughts. His amber eyes blink as he looks around the greenhouse and his face takes on a look of amazement. "Oh wow...there's so many plants...and it looks so nice...and it's so warm!" He says the last as if it's a blessing, untying his jacket taking it off and just basking in the warmth of the greenhouse. "I wonder if I can move here." He says, sounding more satisfied and at peace then he has since he moved to High Reaches. And he looks so very relaxed.

Again, Madilla holds back laughter, and again, it's not very well. She doesn't seem to be laughing /at/ Sho, though - or, at least, not in any malicious kind of way. "I like the warm, too," she tells him, cheerfully. "I'm not from anywhere that's anywhere near as warm as Southern, but /still/. I think I'm going to enjoy spending time up here. I always did miss getting to work in the dirt, with the plants." She pauses a moment, then adds, "I can't see why you can't visit, up here. As long as you stay out of people's way, and don't hurt the plants."

Sho mmms softly, eyes closed as he seems to just absorb the warmth. "That would be good." He says finally, opening one eye partially to peer at Madilla. "You certainly know how ta pick the right places Madilla." Yes, Sho seems to be in his element now. "Wonder if they'd let me run around here..." He says, finally opening his eyes to look around again, looking some of the different plants over as his eyes take in all the different colors and things. "It's like a little bit of Southern in one spot. Warm enough for the warm plants to grow."

Madilla's gaze slides from Sho to the Greenhouse, sweeping around the four corners of the structure. "I'm not sure it's quite big enough for that," she tells him, with a note of reluctance. But, more cheerfully, "I'm a healer! We just tend to like these things. It works out. I can't wait to see the whole place covered in green, with things ready for harvest, and-- just /everything/. I can see this place being quite popular, in winter. Slightly more comfortable than the hatching galleries, anyway."

Sho pouts a bit...hey, he would run in circles if he could stay warm. "It will look nice." He agrees after a moment of accepting the facts and then ponders a bit, his voice a bit quieter and more questioning, "Do ya think...I might be able to help out in here? Maybe learn about the plants?" If it'll keep him warm, he's more then willing to work. "That way I could be here whenever I want!" He's starting to look a bit excited now as he looks at Madilla, eyes wide as he waits for the answer.

Madilla, of course, has no idea that he'd do that. It would be impossible to miss, though, the surprise on her expression, and the way it fades into thoughtfulness and consideration as the seconds pass. "I-- suppose," she allows, finally. "You'd probably have to stick to weeding, at least to begin with, but I can't see why we couldn't get you to-- I'll have to talk to the other healers to be sure, I suppose. I wouldn't want to step on their toes by giving an absolute yes."

Sho looks like a bobble-head as he nods quickly, multiple times, "I don't mind, if you can ask and find out, I'd do anything!" He seems rather excited at the prospect. And while it still might not be as hot as Southern, it's probably still just cool enough for him to keep his shirt on. "I would learn to do whatever ya wanted me to, really." He hasn't been this lively since he got here. A little piece of paradise.

Madilla's expression is briefly appraising, and then she nods. "I'll bring it up and see what people think," she tells him, firmly. "And let you know. It would have to be in addition to your existing duties - at least to begin with. And we could see how things went. I don't know, precisely, how such things go." Unconsciously, one of her hands drops towards one of the small plants, tracing over leaves with soft fingertips.

Sho's bobble-head impersonation continues as he nods quickly again, "Yeah, of course, I would still work at the stables and then come here when it wasn't busy so I could help here." And of course in between his running. Speaking of which...a quick glance up proves his short visit to the hall is almost over. "I have ta be getting back to the stables. It's going to be my turn to watch the Runner in case she gives birth. Someone has ta be there ta help." He says, looking a bit sad as he slowly puts his jacket back on and ties it up. Good bye warmth. He stands where he is still, not really wanting to leave as he looks around the greenhouse one more time.

Madilla gives a few easy bobs of her head, confirming what Sho's said. As he mentions getting back to the stables, she glances up, presumably to check the position of the sun in the sky. "And I should be getting back to the caverns to pick up Lily," she admits. "Else there'll be a terribly grumpy and hungry baby in my future. Come on-- let's head on down together, then." Down the bottom of the stairs, and then out into the open, she concludes, finally, "I'll let you know. Have a good evening, Sho."
