| K'del had to force himself to watch the execution, with fists clenched so tight his knuckled had turned white - and not from cold - and knees shaking so much he was worried he was going to fall. He had to force himself to keep his eyes open, to keep staring at the condemned as the noose was tightened, and then, as his neck snapped. He didn't linger afterwards, but he made a show of cheer nonetheless: they'd done it, hadn't they? Solved the problem, punished the perpetrator. There wasn't much sleeping, that night. Not that he had much to say to Milani; not that either of them had much to say, really. He fell asleep a few times, but not for long, and then there were nightmares, nightmares that resulted in him crying out in his sleep, and waking again, breathless and haunted. So they held each other, providing silent comfort, and even knowing that, he couldn't get his mind to clear. Not enough will power. Too many thoughts. Was it right? To just... end someone's life? Was it his right to make that decision? Was it anyone's? He lay still, trying to keep his breathing even, trying not to let his eyes fill with tears. Never again, he swore to himself. Never again would he be party to the taking of a life. Bulging, pearlescent eyes haunted what little sleep he caught, after that, drifting off without even noticing, but he did not cry out again. |
