| Alikos had suggested he come - suggested that he'd be better use, out here. Better than he was at all of this, though Rhey privately thought he'd done a good job. They trusted Al - they let him keep order with some of the boys, let him know things that not everyone got to know. Not that there was much to know, now, with winter set in and nothing happening to anyone. He'd agreed to come, though. Rone never came out and dealt with the conscripts, and really, it's not like anyone would notice just another boy, amidst all the others. And it felt good to be able to be in the middle of things again, not stuck out at the Weyr. He'd just sidled in, and before you knew it everyone knew him by face - or by nickname. Just another conscript. Of course, the camp was cold, and there wasn't much by way of food, and... in a way, it was just as boring. But Rhey found it easy to move around in it; it was easy to talk to people, to spread ideas, and few people seemed to notice that they came from him. He wasn't wholly sure what he was doing here, or that he would stay for long (it'd be easy to get himself out, easy to call on H'vier and Reisoth for help), but for now... It felt good to be in the middle of it, being the one to send information back instead of receive it. It was something. |
