>---< Lake Shore, High Reaches Weyr(#276RJs) >-------------------------------<

The rest of the bowl may be barren, grass barely surviving at best, but
here by the lake, it's brilliantly green in the warmer months: thickening
and thriving in the silty, boulder-dotted soil just before it transitions
to soft sand and thence to the cool, clear water itself.

A large freshwater lake fed by a low waterfall, it not only provides
warm-weather bathing space for humans and dragons, but has one end fenced
off as a watering hole for the livestock in the feeding grounds. The water
there is often muddier than the rest of the clear lake, whose shallows
drop off abruptly several yards out into deep water, and whose edge
undulates against the coarse-hewn bowl wall: here close enough to just be
bramble-covered rocks, there far enough away that a narrow land bridge
divides the main lake from a smallish pond. Between are several rocky
outcroppings that form excellent makeshift diving points, though only one
-- across the bridge -- has a set of narrow, slippery, quite possibly
  tempting stairs.

Warm sunshine and cloudless skies make for a beautiful day and pleasantly
warm evening. A breeze tempers the heat with no humidity lingering in the
  air.

Afternoon begins the transition to evening as Edyis makes her laps around the lake, Akluseth trailing some behind. It's obvious that the former scribe has adjusted her pace for the flame licked brown and the two don't show signs of slowing any time soon.

Running was what she told the werylingmasters. But running wasn't in her plans. The pair had already done multiple work outs, and although Keysi's body was almost fully up to speed after being allowed to do nothing for so long, she created reasons why they couldn't do another 10 laps. Or so. Neianth's energy, certainly not the same as Akluseth's, but still tirelessly flowing. Pushing. Commanding. Keysi wasn't intending to see Edyis as she crossed the short distance from the weyrlingcomplex to the lake, but the motion is distracting and it's not long until she picks out her friend from not too far away. She'd raise her hand, but she's slowly starting to take advantage of their new form of communication. Neianth's still, reflective pool ripples in its gentle waves to touch Akluseth's oceanic mind, « Brother. » Stated simply.

It's almost instantaneous, the lift of ink-dark eyes and the twist of Akluseth's skull in the other brown pair's direction. Edyis picks up enough speed to close the distance between them effortlessly, "I see you managed to escape finally." Edyis offers with a gentle smile. « Brother. » Akluseth returns, perhaps more energetically, ripples melding into waves. "Why do I get the feeling that I walked in on the wrong portion of that conversation, and should have simply kept my thoughts to myself?" She queries after a beat.

Ripples never engulfed but present, swirling within in serene contentedness. « We do not mean to interrupt your run. » It is this sort of thing he actually does sound apologetic for. But it's short lived as the pair grow closer, the smaller brown taking off from his position as Keysi-shadow to meet Akluseth part way. Keysi on the other hand drops her gaze from Edyis as she comes closer and inquires what she does, "There were a couple of topics," She deflects at first, "But there was no reason to keep your thoughts to yourself. It was headed as it was from the start." And she seems more annoyed at that than she should, a narrowing of her eyes betraying her stoicness.

"Quinlys has lived her entire life in the weyr; naturally it tends to color her perceptions of the world. I am not always as delicate with my phrasing as I should be." Edyis offers gently, sensing perhaps the frustration of her friend. "I get the feeling that this was about more than conflicting world views Keysi. Come on, there are some benches nearby, I know our cots are close, but it's still hard to talk in the barracks." Akluseth for his part takes the cue to continue his run, a watery invitation extended to his smaller brother.

"It's only a couple of times I've had the pleasure of speaking with her on a singular basis on apparently sensitive topics." Her wording is slow and careful, her arms folding over her chest. Keysi finally looks back at Ed, easing off her rigid stance just a touch. "But, you're right. I went to talk to her for other reasons. I don't need to bore you with them. A one-shouldered shrug is given at that. "What trouble have you gotten into today?" Her head tilts with indication of her brown, who has been joined by Neianth without a second though. Still baby, still dragonet, he's clumsy but he's developing fast in his agility and speed even in day to day. He matches pace as best he can with his bigger clutchbrother, taking off with him to ring the lake.

The healer should know better by now, "You rarely ever bore me Keys, and I am worried about you. Lately, you've been more intense than ever." She frowns then, "As if I've had time for trouble. The usual, trying my damnedest not to punch Yesia in her bitch mouth. Unintentionally upsetting weyrlingmasters by pointing out potentially uncomfortable truths. Maybe things would have been better if I had just fought my instincts and stayed with the Traders." She exhales deeply. "It's going to be a rough turn, I feel it."

"That's why I've been staying out of the barracks. I cannot promise I won't hit anyone." Keysi states with a dry, dark chuckle- that broken scratching sound in her throat that Ed would recognize, but others may think her choking. It subsides soon enough. "I've started studying again, thanks to you and the Hall." Indicating she's likely received some form of letter from someone there regarding her Impression. "But I'm failing at tempering him." And, consequently, herself, "That conversation," And a single finger lifts from within the crook of her elbow to make a most subtle motion towards the weyrling complex, "Was looking for assistance in that." The annoyance trickling as she tries to use as few words as possible to say it. "I'm supposed ot try harder." That's not quite the result, but close enough.

Edyis chuckles softly, "Yes well. I don't know how much longer it will last. She was laying into Tomic the other day. Tomic! Big sweetheart of a guy who never said a bad thing about anybody." On assistance, she chews at her lower lip. "Yeah, that does sound like particularly bad advice for a weyrlingmaster to give in that situation. Or at the very least not entirely helpful advice." There might be a glance about to make sure no one overhears that part. "K'zin, might be a better person to talk to, or even A'rist. Both of them have impossibly headstrong lifemates." Edyis suggests, settling into the bench and propping her elbows on her knees as she watches the babies run.

Keysi shakes her head, "H'kon." Is said simply, as if that is her answer in this. She remains standing, though she's beside the bench, staring across the lake as the young browns play, and the the light of day weakens. She's too rigid to be willing to sit. "It will be fine. It just did not end as expected." Expected? Hoped? "Tomic?" That's an interesting thought and she can do little else but shake her head, "What did he do? And Jorrth?" Both too kind for their own good. "But it's more than just her." And, as if something Ed said before comes more to light now that previously, "You're better here than with the traders. It happened for a reason."

"Maybe." She exhales, "Doesn't mean I'm not afraid to discover that I unwittingly sacrificed the things I loved the most." There's a slow swallow with the admission. "If I ever meet this Fate thing you keep talking about I will be sure to give it a good punch in the nose." Edyis aims for humor. "Yes Tomic, she flounced off otherwise I was about to deck her. Who else is giving you problems in the barracks?"

"You've surely talked to Alida about it. She didn't help your concerns more than my," Keysi lifts a hand, dismissive of herself, "inexperienced thoughts have?" There's humor at the corner of her eyes, a wrinkle but nothing more, "Careful; it punches back." She leans her hip on the bench, intensity waning enough with Akluseth distractin Neianth that some degree of relaxing is possible, "Nobody gives me trouble." Carefully worded again but left at that, cryptic.

"Alida's advice is probably just as likely to land me extra laps most days." A flash of teeth, and a deep affection clear in her voice as she speaks of the bluerider. "Just because they don't openly give you trouble doesn't mean that that person isn't an arrogant prick." She offers helpfully. "Everyone's so focused on building their bond with their lifemate and adjusting."

Keysi stares at the gently moving waters of the lake, letting time drift by as she's lost in her own thoughts. It can't be too troubling, though, as Neianth pays it no mind amidst his running. "I don't do the best at controlling my temper at certain times." That made clearly evident by their last night together before the Hatching, "But with him provoking me," Her arms return to being folded. She is, at least, better than the last time they had a chance to talk. "We may have set off Quinlys today," And we indicating Ed of course, "But I don't wish to get into that much trouble. Not yet anyway." A glance is given to Ed out of the corner of her eye. Amused perhaps? Lighter?

"I have acquired a knack for pissing people off." Edyis murmurs, "Part of why I was sent to travel with traders, I believe." She exhales, then dark eyes drifting over the lake. "Quinlys is under pressure; this clutch is probably a situation she has never faced before. Still her record, aside from the political aspect speaks for itself. She's never lost a Weyrling." Edyis tilts her head then frowning, "I carry my convictions a little too closely perhaps. If I didn't I wouldn't be myself anymore, I would just be whatever someone else made of me." She sighs, "I lived too much of my life that way ever to want to go back. Still maybe if I just keep my mouth shut, and maybe... maybe get into Savannah... If, If they want me."

Keysi listens, unmoving, statue-like save her long hair that gently sways with passing breezes- something else to take care of in the semi-near future. "For all that talk I did of serving and-" Keysi sighs, "leadership and all of it, I did Quinlys no favors with all that she's dealing with. Everything bothers me, sets me off." The intensity, the seriousness has returned. Neutrality a difficult thing. "You're good as you are." Biased, perhaps, as she is. "But..." and this next pause is somewhat strained before she breaths, "yes. You can still talk to me anyhow you would like, though." An invitation for words, fists, whatever- given their young ones can handle it.

"You did, but she did not." Keysi says tightly, "And it has happened before I had an excuse, and I can't assure it won't again." Edyis' reasoning is met with a nod, "An unfortunate thing that is when people could learn a lot from it." In theory, she means when talking about uncomfortable things. Keys is about as closed-mouth of secrets as if Edyis was simply speaking them while flying Between, but she does get a hint of a smirk at the edges of her lips in response for it. "Promise." Is offered unnecessarily. "It's getting late." She adds, letting her arms fall and standing up straighter, "Maybe he'll give you some peace tonight. They've been at it for some time now."

Edyis nods, "I have been told by many riders... it does get easier." She offers, standing then, watching the two brown weyrlings as they return. "If you ever need someone you won't get in trouble for pummeling. Let me know." She grins. The pair start off to continue their running.
