| Living Cavern, High Reaches Weyr(#350RJs) Stalactites hang high above this enormous cavern like a jagged chandelier or an inversion of the Spires themselves, but shadows cling to them instead of light. Below lie great tables arranged in rows, each large enough to serve a fighting wing, while in the nooks and alcoves around the cavern's edge sit more sensibly-sized tables, from six- and eight-seaters down to intimate spots for just a couple of diners. The only really open space is around the kitchen entrance, smelling of food and rarely quiet, and by the nearby serving tables with their long buffet of the day's offerings. Tapestries on the smooth walls -- some faded and others newly woven -- only slightly mute the sea of sound when a meal is in full swing, but they add cheerfulness augmented by the glowlight from wall sconces and the centerpieces of each table. Still, shadows always creep along the ceiling and into the mouths of the exits -- the myriad small hallways at one end of the cavern and, at the other, the twisting tunnel to the bowl near an array of coathooks and and hatracks -- and late at night, when the glows are allowed to dim, the chamber can seem very dark indeed. N'thei carries in from the bowl one wooden crate, out of which a few rubber-looking tubes have managed to peek and creep over the side; it jingles with a metallic ring to match the length of his strides, the dull sound of brass-against-brass sounding from within. Whistling without tune, he cuts across the living cavern toward the lower caverns only to pause halfway through with a sudden tilt of his head and thoughtful-looking squint. Lips pursed, he back-tracks toward the serving table, mostly desolate with the dinner-hour come and gone. At the serving table stands Aeryn, pouring herself a fresh cup of klah. A hide tucked under her arm as she prepares to do some reading this evening. She glances up at the back-track caught in the corner of her eye and looks on thoughtfully before smiling and offering up a cup. "Klah?" Whatever arrested him initially takes a back-seat when N'thei's confronted with no less than a smiling face and an offering of klah. "What?" he asks like he can't quite get his head around that utterly innocuous question, like never in his life has anyone just smiled and offered a mug. "Who are you." He slides the edge of his box on the corner of the table, unburdening him of part of its weight, and turns a sudden frown on Aeryn-- the severity of which might go a ways to explain why being offered a mug of klah served with a smile is so foreign to him. Aeryn frowns glancing around as if shes done something wrong. "Klah? Would you like a cup?" She repeats and takes a quick sip of her own. However, she can't get away from the question of 'who are you' which furthers her discomfort visably as she fidgets with her cup for a moment. "um, Aeryn, new Journeywoman healer." She offers setting her cup aside on the table as though she has done something she shouldn't. "I just arrived this morning." She adds continuing to fidget. N'thei has that effect on people, the one that makes them think they're a hair's breadth from peril. Frowning only exacerbates the problem. "We have a healer. Delifa." He sizes Aeryn up for longer than is really polite before, bracing the box with one hand, he shoves his other hand across in front of her abruptly. "But welcome to the Reaches, Aeryn. You specialize in...?" Aeryn frowns even more deeply then before. wrapping her fingers tightly around the hide that was under her arm. Sure they have a healer, but can you ever have too many? Shes incredibly uncomfortable now, glancing toward the path to the innor cavern as she considers retreat to the safty of her room. Confusion spreads freely in her expression, whether to shake hands, hand him a cup of klah, or run and hide. "Midwife." Is all she replies, unmoving. "Shake hands." Not that he can read thoughts, but N'thei seems like he's comfortable telling people what to do. "Midwife. More useful than an herbalist would have been, certainly, but still." The tone teases more than it downright belittles, but the man has a particular harshness that's hardly well-paired to a skittish young woman. "N'thei; nice to meet you." "Right." Aeryn feints a smile and shakes hands. And thus resolving that shes not done anything wrong retrives her cup of klah sipping it again. "Well, at least i'm useful." She offers a hint of a more genuine smile. "Nice to meet you as well." Now it's back to that orignal question. "Did you want some klah?" Yes everything is better with klah. "No, actually." N'thei looks at the klah a second before he takes his hand back to collect the crate again, still frowns despite Aeryn's attempts at a genuine smile. Maybe he doesn't know /how/ to smile? "We have an apprentice too. Madilla. Did you meet her yet." Aeryn shakes her head in precedence of an answer. "No, I've only spent a small time in the infirmary though. Spent most of the day touring the weyr; trying to learn where everything is at. These caverns are rather extensive. I'm sure I'll meet her tomorrow though." Shes relaxed a little more now. Her natural easy-going smile returning to her expression. Thoughtful; "Or else we'll have replaced her with someone a little more--" N'thei clips off whatever he was going to say, his eyebrows crept upward, a look over his shoulder toward the inner caverns when the subject shifts to them. "Long as you can find the kitchen, the dorm, and the latrines, not much else you need to know, neh? Suppose the infirmary in your case." Aeryn gives a little shake of her head to that idea. "I find it's always better to know where your going in case of an emergency. So while it's good to know where the most important places are." She gestures to him in reference to his list of places. "It's good to know where the less important places are." "Then can you draw a map." N'thei looks pointedly at the hide Aeryn's got all rolled up, his eyebrows climbing as if to put a question in his expression where it hasn't landed in his voice. "Best of luck, Aeryn. Welcome aboard." The way he says it, the way he hefts the crate and scrapes a step back makes it plain he plans to depart soon. Aeryn nods and glances to the hide. "Yes, just was working that actually, helps me to remember it better," Shes smiles more thoughtfully, and refilling her cup she turns toward the long rows of tables, "Thank you." She replies with a nod. "Excuse me." Is added before she heads off to the nearest empty table. N'thei can be heard to mumble something about three-healers and no-more-thread, very-nice, while he wheels about to head toward the inner caverns. |
