| She had danced at the bonfire. Rhonda had dressed her like a doll, flat sandals and a full skirt that floated with tier upon tier of silky orange and yellow cloth like the flames themselves. A blouse that crossed in front, pinned with something glittery. And a veil for it all, fine coppery lace that hid her face and flew out like wings when she danced. Sweet little Rhonda wore something sleeker, less playful, and never did come back to the barracks that night. Leova did. She and Vrianth had their new weyr, but it had to wait. For dancing and food, first. Then a group of them had gone up to L'vae's, finding it on the second or third try in the dark, and drunk down the new Turn. More dancing. She wasn't sure who half the people were, and it didn't seem to matter. And when her head was light and dizzy and she was seeing sparks even when there weren't any, she slipped out when they couldn't see and couldn't ask her to stay. Hung onto Vrianth's neck while her dragon took them back home. Home, to their couch and her little cot and the little press that Vrianth kept threatening to whack her wings on but never did. There was a little candle that she had saved up for, a hearth in miniature, and she sat with it in the shelter of Vrianth's wings to keep it from guttering and to keep all the warmth and light inside. And she sang soft love songs to her dragon, and she could feel Vrianth's happiness, and hear the rumbly gravelly croon in her ears and the back of her head. Vrianth got to blow the candle out. But only after Leova promised to light it again the next night, in the weyr all their own. |
