| It is early enough in the day that the lakeside is not empty. A blue and green occupy the depths of the lake at the far end, appearing to play some odd version of tag that involves hiding beneath the waves and leaving trails of ripples. There are people about, some heading in the direction of the caverns and the delicious smells wafting from that direction; others continue on to the craft complex to start with their daily work. One girl in particular sits perched on one of the large boulders, leather bound notebook splayed against one knee. A stick of charcoal scribbles away furiously as dark brown eyes scan and note every little detail of the scene, mostly the comings and goings. From the bowl, a tall figure slouches his way in, heading for the water. That he picks a bit of shore that's unoccupied is probably deliberate, and he crouches there, scooping up some water and washing face and hands roughly. Casually, a small kitten, tail twitching, approaches as if trailing from a distance, though Drex seems unaware of either kitten or artist. While Drex is casually studied with curiosity, at least untill the kitten steals his thunder. It's a swift shift of her weight and Edyis is down off the rock focused with a singular goal in mind, pet the kitty. She's slow, but deliberate, trying not to startle the poor beast but possibly confusing the human, potentially even more so when she starts making sounds of encouragement at the little beast. The sailor doesn't seem aware of artist -- not until she starts making sounds. Then Drex straightens, turning to stare at her with a furrow of brow, and a folding of arms across his chest. Despite the kitten's apparent attachment to him, he gives it a glance, then looks back to the girl. The kitten, for her part, stays still -- at least until the last moment, when she's within reach, and then she skitters off in the direction of the Weyr, earning a snort of amusement from Drex. Rejected! The disappointment is clear, she even pouts just a little bit. It is only after the ball of fluff skitters that she takes a more serious study of the sailor, cheeks flushing faintly with color. "What. It was adorable." She states studying his face as though comparing it to something, maybe trying to remember if she's seen him before. Another snort, this time directed at the girl, a wordless, really? Still, Drex takes the inspection from her in stride, mouth twitching into a smirk, now. "You don't like kittens?" Edyis asks somewhat defensively, folding her arms. "I can't remember your name, I'm sorry." She adds finally, a flag of surrender? Or perhaps a cue for him to introduce himself? She doesn't seem to elaborate on the point. "Never said anything about it," comes Drex's drawl. "She follows me 'round now and then," a lift-and-drop of his shoulder in a single movement. His brows go up, briefly. "We haven't met." "You didn't have to say anything. But, she is adorable." Edyis points out, after a beat, arms falling sketchbook still held in one hand. "That would explain it then. I'm Edyis; it is nice to meet you..." She trails, waiting at least for a name it seems. "You ain't talked to me long enough to say that," that it's nice to meet him, presumably. "Drex," he says, finally, without any returned sentiment or niceties attached. "Should I say instead that it is awkward and uncomfortable? Or that I enjoy meeting new people regardless of how pleasant or unpleasant they seem to be, if only because you never know who will turn out to be interesting, or completely boring." She offers with a smirk of her own. "Have you always lived in the weyr, or is it some strange twist of fate that brought you?" "Be more honest," Drex replies, with a nod, as if more approving of her proposed response than her actual. It's her latter question that makes his brow furrow. "Do I look like I belong here?" in a tone that suggests that the correct response should be. "Honesty, usually gets me into far more trouble than politeness." She counters thoughtfully, though the next seems earnest. "Do I?" She laughs, adding "Trust me, around here it gets difficult to tell after a while. Reaches is like a rain barrel without a proper cover. Catches all kinds of things that don't necessarily belong." She shrugs, after a moment, attention drifting to their surroundings every so often. "If this isn't where you belong than where is home for you?" He gives another of those half-completed shrugs in answer to her question, Drex says bluntly, "Nowhere." Whether that's true or he's just trying to dissuade her questions is hard to say, but the fact that he starts moving past her suggests perhaps more the latter than the former. "Yer as nosy as a weyrfolk," he throws as he steps past. "Mm I don't know about weyrfolk being nosey. Now I, on the other hand, am obnoxiously and insatiably curious." Watching him step past, falling into step a few paces behind. "Nowhere sounds rather like a very interesting place to come from." "Ain't really at all," Drex says, plainly. "You all want to know where I came from and where I'm going and what I'm doing. You'd think you didn't have anything better to do," and he glances at Edyis, since she's following him. "You all. Hm, well if people are asking so frequently, I guess you aren't from the Hall. There isn't a clutch on the sands, so you are certainly not a candidate either." She muses out loud, with a smile. "Must be taxing to be such a novelty. You know, your irritation with the topic though, just makes it all the more interesting." She's grinning a little now. Drex rolls his eyes. And then he walks away, lengthening his stride across the bowl to deliberately out pace her. As for her? She just laughs. Heading in the direction of the records room, possibly on the lookout for other cute and fuzzies. |
