| It's damp rather than actually raining at Tillek, today, which means the seas aren't too rough for even the smallest of vessels. Mid-morning, thus, finds the docks as bustling as ever, from vendors advertising their wares ("Fresh fish!") to sailors at work on their ships. Things quiet down, away from the hold itself; the docks off towards the shale beach that separates Hold from Craft are largely deserted for the moment, and it's there that Pia-- legs swinging over the edge of the wooden walkway-- perches, humming to herself as she sketches in a book held open upon her lap. The satchel over the woman's shoulder is adjusted as she walks, clad in a woolen sweater and leather pants, a large leather knapsack slung over one shoulder as she skims over the pages of a small leather volume, as though checking it against her surroundings. Dark curls braided with ribbon and charms she might pass for any other holder or craftsperson, aside from the lack of a knot at her shoulder. It's when she sees Pia that a smile spreads slowly, "Hello, sorry to trouble you, do you know where they have the sea craft testing going on?" Dark eyes scanning the woman for signs of knot or other identifiers. "Craft docks," says Pia without glancing up, gesturing with the jut of one thumb in the direction of the Fishercraft, across the beach and around the cove. Only then the shading motion of her pencil stops and she glances up, eyes and expression bright and cheerful. "But you're late, if that's where you're supposed to be... they started hours and hours ago. It's a good day for anyone not involved to stay away, pretty much." There's a low whistle, as she glances in the direction of those docks, blanching slightly. "Well, so much for that plan." Brows knitting together as she tugs at the hem of her sweater. "Suppose so," She agrees of the staying away, lips pursing slightly. "Any idea on when they will be done?" Moving over to peek at the sketching curiously. "Plan?" The corners of Pia's mouth lift up and up and up, as if there's a laugh brimming behind her expression. Her sketch is, in fact, less sketch and more map; the starcrafter-- who is not wearing her knot at present-- has already laid out the outline, and is now shading in topography in a tidy hand. "To be honest, I'm not sure. I pretty much just skedaddled as soon as breakfast was done, you know? As long as it doesn't rain, I can hang here until supper." Edyis smiles, "My little brother is testing today, he's still a little bit young for the hall, but my uncle thought it might be good for him to at least try the test this turn, to get a feel for it." She returns the girls smile with one of her own, "So, I wanted to wish him luck before he went in." The map hold's the majority of the former scribe's attention, dark eyes drinking in the details curiously. "Out of sight, out of mind?" She murmurs wryly. Almost nostalgic. "Seems to be holding, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get a few drizzles. You part of the Sea craft yourself?" She wonders, looking at the map. "Your good, almost spot on for how it looks from the air. I'm impressed." Enlightenment follows; if anything, Pia's expression brightens at the idea. "Good for him," she declares, cheerfully. "And for your uncle, too. You may be too late to wish luck, but if you show up afterwards-- I bet that'll feel great, too." Her toes point, wiggling within their boots as she adds, "No, no, I'm a starcrafter. Cartography. You know the place?" This, more than anything, captures her interest, pleased pride so obvious. "I want to keep going, but it's hard getting the resources... ships, or by foot, or whichever it is, you know? But things change, and you have to keep the maps right or what even is the point?" Edyis smiles, "Thank you, that is a good idea." The word cartography sends both brows upward a litte, and Edyis's smile goes wider. "Really? So you work with maps and know how to set the legends and keys?" Excitement building in her voice. "Yes, that is just a little ways north of here, takes longer to get there on foot but not far as the dragon flies." There's a thoughtful pause her free hand rubbing at the back of her neck. "Is that a problem for your craft hall? Getting the resources for travel to properly survey?" She looks at the girl a minute, seeming to debate something internally. "Why doesn't the hall ask the Weyr for assistance with that? I mean, how many days does it usually take to do a proper survey?" Pia's nod, so enthusiastic, confirms Edyis' summary of the work she does. The rest, however, leaves her on ground that is both more and less sure. "It's a pain in the ass," is bald, though far too exuberant to be irritable over dramatic; dramatic is far more apt. "And-- well, most of the time we don't do big expeditions, because... well, that takes money. It's usually someone paying for it to be done and we get sent out, and it's all just limited scope and boring. I'd like to remap half the planet, and especially the Western Islands since our maps of them are either not great or just don't exist at all, and--" She runs out of breath to continue, but only for a moment. "I guess we're just used to the Weyr being busy." Edyis considers the points the starcrafter makes nodding along thoughtfully. "But the maps are important, right? I think I remember my Uncle saying something about how the coastline changes and if you aren't mindful of it, it's easy to get lost." She tilts her head, "What kind of money does it take? Just supplies and provisions or are there other things involved?" The last earns a rueful smile, "Oh I won't say the Weyr isn't busy, they have to work hard to preserve those threadfighting skills, but you know, I've heard rumors that there are wings that can pull other duties. It might be an idea to bring up to your craftmaster." She glances at her again thoughtfully, "I mean there might be a way to do things so it benefit's both sides right? There's eggs due soon, last I heard. Maybe in exchange for candidates or something." The idea casually thrown out, as she continues to study. "Heck, I happen to know a few people who'd be more than willing to fly you up there to check things out for yourself for a few tips on mapmaking." "Cartography's not exactly a high power speciality in my craft," Pia points out, though there's no missing that Edyis' words have given her pause; food for thought, certainly. "But it would... it would make sense, wouldn't it? There's no expedition, if you did it like that, just... and from the air it would be so much easier to get landmarks and shapes." Her excitement is all but transcendent." Abruptly, she sticks her pencil behind one ear and thrusts her hand, unceremoniously, in the brownrider's direction. "I'm Pia. Journeyman Starcrafter, but I think we established that already." "It is certianly a thought." Edyis agrees, smiling as the hand is thrust in her direction. "Edyis, Visiting Journeyman Balien at the seacraft. It's a pleasure to make your aquaintence Pia." She shakes it, with a light laugh, "Well met." There's a glance again at the map with a thoughtful pause, and eventually she adds, "Brown Akluseth's, Snowdrift Wing, but I'm just visiting family." Hence the lack of knot and flight gear, probably. "Ohhhhh," says Pia, on an exhale, as the pieces slot into place: Edyis is a dragonrider. Her handshake is more enthusiastic than firm, and lasts only a few moments; her fingers don't seem to want to stay still, and in truth, it half looks as though she's about to clap her hands together in glee. "I'll talk to my Craftmasters," she decides. "But even if they say no... an unofficial partnership, we could do that, right? Even just for a small project?" Edyis laughs a little sheepish. "Sure, I mean I'd have to get clearance from my wingeader, unless it's something we can do on rest days, but Akluseth would love it, and honestly I'm fascinated by all manner of record keeping." She grins. "And I know my wing second is a huge fan of maps, period so, it shouldn't be too difficult to get something worked out." This time, Pia actually does clap her hands together, and if she were standing? She'd probably wiggle, too. "This is amazing," she tells the brownrider, fervently. "I had no idea today would end up being so productive. I can contact you at the Weyr? I mean... you could, of course talk to your wingleader and everything, and..." She beams. "It's barter, really, isn't it? Trade for trade." Edyis laughs, "Sure, I would need to anyway to get the time away from drills. You can send word with the watch riders If you need to get ahold of me between now and then," charmed by the woman's enthusiasm. "I will check in with Jo and Mielline on it when I get a chance. " And there's a grin for trade for trade and bartering. "I should be heading back this evening after I've checked in with my brother. "That's just... wonderful," enthuses Pia, brightly (yes, still). Her nod is long and enthusiastic, as she adds, "I should let you go visit, though. They might be done by now... I don't think it will take that long, but I'm not sure. I always kind of avoid it, all those little kids. But... I'll be in touch." That, at least, is definite. Edyis grins, "Thanks, and I will keep an ear out, it was a pleasure meeting you Journeyman Pia." And with that the brownrider is taking off at a jog in the direction of the craft docs with a smile. |
