Resident Common Room, High Reaches Weyr

Just off of the main passageway lies the small cavern that forms the hub of the residents' quarters, kept immaculately clean by the headwoman's staff and warmed in cold weather by a stone hearth to the left and well back from the entrance. Comfortable chairs and a plush fur arrayed before the hearth make an inviting spot to curl up with a book or handicraft, or just to sit and chat. Beyond, additional chairs stand in clusters throughout the room, some upholstered with age-softened hide, some plain wood. At the widest point of the cavern, a round table gleams with polish, though its surface is nicked and scarred from Turns of use. Beyond the table, the very back of the cavern often lies in shadow unless the glowbaskets there are unlidded to cast cozy pools of light. The commingled scents of klah, smoke and polish permeate the air along with the sweetness of rosemary and lavender.

Tapestries hang across the entrances to dormitories and more private quarters as well as the exit to the outer hall, colorful protections from drafts.

Those scheduled with indoor chores today are lucky to avoid the winds that bluster through the bowls outside, because inside, in the maze of caverns that make up the inner sanctuary of the Weyr, it is breeze-free and relatively warm - even warmer, in fact, if you're close to one of the crackling indoor fires. Nicky's one of the lucky ones. He's just exiting the candidate quarters, and he starts meandering his way casually towards the corridors that will lead him to the living caverns, where his rumbling tummy tells him it's almost time for lunch to be served.

Nicky...meet Alida, and in head-first fashion, too. The guard is in hot pursuit of yet another tunnelsnake, her legs and feet moving in a solid jog as she gives a few well-timed pokes at said beastie with her three-tined, mini-trident like weapon. The last poke manages to pierce the fat tail of the 'snake, which instantly thrashes about to try and bite the blonde. She hasn't had time or the focus to notice Nicky wending his way around a bank in the coridoor they're both occupying...which might lead to a head-on collision, if *he* doesn't notice her footfalls.

Hunger can blinker a boy, blocking out anything but food. And so he doesn't hear those footfalls - or if he does, he doesn't associate them with someone charging along towards him. His easy-going, long-legged pace carries him smack into Alida and her speared little beastie; his hands coming up in rapid apology. Rapid enough for him to misjudge the distance between them, so he ends up giving her a pretty solid, if not necessarily paniful, whack with his fingers.

"SHIT!" is the first thing out of Alida's mouth when the collision with Nicky ensues, the palest-blonde bouncing backward a little as her forehead whumps off his chest, most likely. She was looking down, after all. And immediately on the heels of the primary impact comes the secondary one from the apologetic male, his fingers contacting her shoulders and chin, sides of cheeks, smarting the guard. Still, she retains the presence of mind to keep her hands on the haft of her 'snake hunting weapon, and those now-irritated green eyes jerk from the would-be farrier down to the beastie she formerly spitted against the floor. It's just now releasing her boot leather from its toothy maw, and writhing about as it tries to escape its impalement...and splattering some ichor during such.

The writhing of the beast by his feet gives Nicky the perfect excuse to jump backwards from the awkwardly close position he's in with Alida, so he does so with an 'Oh!' of surprise, scooting far enough back that the tunnesnake won't be able to lunge at him in its death throes. He looks up at Alida and pulls a face that's part ick, part sorry, part smile, and holds his hands up - without hitting anything this time - in a gesture of apology. "S-sorry, Alida... um... g-good job with the t-tunnelsnake!"

Conquering most of her instant bristling irritation by concentrating on her 'foe,' Alida settles a boot atop the tunnelsnake's neck, jerks her tined weapon from its tail, and then spikes its head with a singular, neat thrust that instantly kills the beastie. The very act of killing also seems to slowly calm the woman, her greens slowly losing their fire as she finally looks up to Nicky again. "No problem. Shit happens..." is clipped off by the holder gal, her weapon then quickly lifted - with skewered 'snake still attached and twitching - to be rammed down against the stony ground once more, thus insuring a full piercing of its skull.

Nicky watches the fate of the tunnelsnake with wide eyes. "Um... 's-specially if you're a t-tunnelsnake." Because shit doesn't get any worse that what Alida's just inflicted upon the crushed creature, does it? He doesn't comment on the killing, though his expression likely says more than he could (and without stuttering, too). Lifting his gaze from the pathetically dead beast, he gives Alida a soft, tentative smile. "Um. A-Alida? I wanted to, um, a-ask you something. D-do you have a, um, m-moment?"

The slow and slightly serpentine grin rising to the holder's lips likely qualifies as a silent 'yes' for Nicky, Alida then efficiently jerking her weapon free of the now-defunct tunnelsnake with one crisp pull. The thing is propped against a wall while the young woman opens up one of her heavily-woven rucksacks, the tail of the serpent grabbed up just before she deposits the corpse within the bag. Watching the ophidian the whole time just in case its leftover reflexes kick in somehow leaves her open to a hint of befuddlement about Nicky's ensuing question, the guard once more looking over to her fellow candidate...and then nodding. "Shoot."

"Um, y-you're pretty, er, g-good with that, um, t-tunnelsnake spear." Lead in with a compliment, Nicky; isn't that what Mave told him? Or something like that, anyway. "So, um, I-I was wondering if, um, when the e-eggs hatch, i-if you'd c-care to, um, st-stand by me? O-on the S-Sands? Um, W-Waki might be w-with us - i-if you'd l-like to stand w-with me?" Note the might, and the uncertain tone; Nicky doesn't know if his bestie'll be there or not.

Those cool eyes simply watch Nicky for the moment, Alida not having to glance at her rucksack as her hands twine the neck of it tight, then knotting it closed once again. Apparently she's caught a few more tunnelsnakes today, since the bag is damp with the ichor it's absorbed. Nothing is said as to her efficiency with the tined weapon, nor to the youth's inquiry about teaming up with him and Waki when they're finally out on the Sands...'lida moving on to quietly hefting up, then inspecting her weapon for any potential problems it might've developed during use.

"O-oh. Ok." Nicky takes the silence as Alida declining his request, and he rocks awkwardly back on his heels while looking down at his toes. "Um. W-well, i-if you ch-change your mind, and, um, y-you would l-like to stand b-beside me, um, I-I'd be honoured t-to have you there, um... b-but it's up to you, of c-course." Alida makes him nervous, and he chews down on his lip while looking along the corridor towards the living caverns. "Um... I-I was going to get something to eat. I'll s-see you later, perhaps?"

It's only when Nicky's stopped speaking, and is partially through his retreat further up the coridoor that Alida clips off her offhanded, alto, "Are you askin' for Waki, 'r just yourself?"

Nicky pauses, looking at Alida. "F-for me. Um... W-Waki and I are..." Awkward silence, and Nicky shrugs. "For m-me. I-I've been told some p-pretty scary stories about wh-what can h-happen out there, and, um, I th-thought perhaps we could, um, l-look out for one another. Y-you seem g-good at that, and I-I'd like to, um, h-have your back."

For a moment, Alida's features remain cool, poker-like as Nicky speaks, her reactions and thoughts inscrutable. It's only when the teen admits his wish is only from himself that the guard gives a thin little smirk - Nicky perhaps having avoided something dangerous with his truthfulness - and finally comments, "Sounds okay." His comment about having her back, however, meets with a raise of brows and a cynically-skeptical expression. No matter; the holder takes up her weapon and sacks in hands, and sets into motion again, continuing on down the coridoor in methodical fashion. Her final comment is low, echoing, and not at all loud: "Enjoy."

"You too, A-Alida," Nicky calls softly after her. He's pleased that she's accepted, and grins as he watches her go off on her way. Then he turns to continue on his, heading towards food to satiate the rumble in his belly.
