The base of the waterfall, at the furthest end of the Weyr's lake, was becoming one of N'ky's favourite haunts. Quiet, away from it all, and the spray from the 'fall kept the air cool enough in the summer heat. During the day, there were even rainbows to be seen in the light mist; the evening's fading light, however, failed to produce such prettiness.

Not that he was paying attention.

N'ky was curled up and comfortable between Cailluneth's forelegs, leaning in against her chest with her warm hide against his five o'clock shadowed cheek. The summer heat had long dried her off after her post-feed bathing dip in the waterfall's plunge pool, though his shorts were still slightly damp. He didn't even notice that the fabric was heavy and cool against his thighs, or the rumbling in his tummy from having skipped another dinner. He'd sat there, sure enough, at the end of the weyrling table with a plate in front of him, but nothing on it - or in the Weyr's evening spread at all, really - appealed to him. So he poked around with his fork, drank his klah, smiled at the conversation if it expanded to include him and contributed the bare minimum, before making his excuses to slip off.

He wanted to be with Cailluneth. No weyrlings, with all their confusion and drama and ambition and everything else - just Cailluneth, with her rainbow thoughts and kaleidoscope love, and her warm hide. She was safe, secure, all that he needed, and the spot between her forelegs, where he could hear her heartbeat if he pressed close enough to her chest, was the very best place on the entire planet.

It was another evening of skipped studies, avoided obligations save for those to his dragon, missed conversations and ignored relationships, and it was perfect.

The throbbing heartbeat within her chest echoed throughout Cailluneth's thoughts, and it was easy to lose himself in them, especially when the silvery sails of his lifemate's wings formed a protective cocoon around him. He knew she was watching, that she would watch until she fell asleep, and that he was safe.

« My heart. » Two simple words, whirled into the golden pink of Cailluneth's thoughts for him. A burst of teal for their mentor and his green, with the curling smoke of a question and the sensation of weightlessness - a clear enough message for her lifemate to understand.

« Maybe tomorrow. » Though both he and Cailluneth knew that when C'ter and his green Pegath came calling to take them flying, they would decline. Another day, another excuse; did it matter that they'd still not had their first flight? « I'm not ready yet. »

Cailluneth understood. She understood that he was terrified of how it would hurt them both if something went... wrong. And it so clearly could. N'ky couldn't - wouldn't - risk anything, so they'd remained grounded, Cailluneth's only flights being made solo.

The rumbling of his lifemate's reassuring purr put him at ease, while the lavender blanket of thought that wrapped around him began to lull him into the peace of sleep. Whether for an hour, three, the whole night - it didn't matter.

One final thought before drifting off: « We're ok, aren't we? » Not really 'we', but I, seeking reassurance from the only one who could possibly understand what he meant.

The overwhelming burst of golden pink, intense and hot with the brightest of loving copper flames, was all the reassurance he needed.
