| Okay, so, later, she'd deny that this happened. But, after K'del shut his eyes, after his breathing fell into the patterns of sleep, after she was sure he was totally asleep and there was no chance that he would hear her heart race or her breath become shallow, she lifted the tight grip she'd had on that part of herself that had squirmed when she offered her daughter. Immediately, that part of herself freaked out. Squirmy Tayte: "Who does that?! You've known him less than six months and you're offering to give up half of your daughter to him? Your daughter! Your Yvalia. The child you bore alone, birthed alone, named alone, reared alone. She is yours. What are you thinking?!" Non-Squirmy Tayte: "She still is mine. I'm just-- going to share her now." Even Non-Squirmy Tayte winced inwardly as she said it. ST: "What if he hurts her? What if he abandons her?" NST: "He won't. He won't!" ST: "How do you know?!" NST: I don't-- but I feel it." That calmed Squirmy Tayte, just a little. Maybe if she'd been arguing with someone else, feelings wouldn't count for much, but arguing with part of yourself means that your debate opponent feels what you do. It makes for a stronger argument that way. NST: "If I were to die, she'll have someone to care for her. Someone I trust." ST: "Trust. Impulsive. Remember how you trusted Cherie?" It hurt. It always hurt, to remember Cherie. NST: "K'del and Cherie aren't the same people. It's different with K'del. We connect." ST: "And you don't." Non-Squirmy Tayte didn't like this being pointed out and she lost more of herself to the Squirmy side. There wasn't really an argument for this. ST: "You could take it back." NST: "And watch Yvalia cry like that, again? Like she has in the last seven? She wants a father. K'del wants a daughter. It's win-win for them." ST: "And for you?" NST: "I--" ST: "That's what I thought." NST: "Oh, shut up." And NST steam-rolled ST back into the whole. They were doing this. That was all there was to it. They were taking this leap of faith together. Sometimes leaps of faith were rewarded. Sometimes when you take the chance to fall, you fly. So fall they all would. Hand in hand in hand into this crazy thing called a family. She thought about getting up to drink to the hope of it. The hope of flight. But now she had two sleepers to worry about waking. At least, she thought as she drifted off to sleep, I thought about this for longer than I did about what got me Vali to begin with. So that was growth, right? |
