| Garden Patio Ledge, High Reaches Weyr Partly sheltered by the curving stone overhang, partly exposed to the weather, the wide stone patio serves as a balcony for socializing or just plain drinking on a sizable scale. The repurposed ledge might once have let two large dragons land, but now there's too much furniture for that: two rustic tables with attendant chairs, plus a couple more in particularly good weather, and a wrought iron bench situated to make the most of the view of the western bowl and the lake beyond. Other changes include rough little niches carved out of the stone walls to hold glows in colored bottles at night, the climbing plant that's being trained to grow up along the overhang, and the blue ceramic pots of flowers that dot the edge of the ledge as a colorful reminder not to fall off. An archway leads to the Snowasis itself, housed in the ledge's former weyr, while a few wide steps descend along the wall to the bowl. Crisp and clear, not a cloud in the sky, the sun has done something to warm the stone ledge outside the Snowasis, though the air is still exceptionally cold. It must be a rest-day for some, for instead of being in classes, K'del is arranged, long limbs akimbo, on the wrought iron bench, watching Cadejoth and some of the other weyrling dragons play in the bowl below, where they are sweeping snow at each other. Overall there's been some warmer days tossed in and some of the snow along the edges of paths through the Bowl has started to go slushy making for messy times just inside the caverns. Milani's just kicking a little piece of dirtied wet muck off the edge of the patio ledge where she's paused with a steaming cup. Once that's dealt with, she waves to the other weyrlings, a merry greeting then turns towards that same bench and pauses, finding K'del there. Laughing she nods to what space remains. "Mind company?" she asks cheerily. The mushy snow is probably something of why K'del's face is struggling to show his amusement, though the well-grown dragons - Cadejoth is over eleven feet long at this point - certainly do look quite a sight being so playful. They are, however, getting /filthy/. Several of the weyrlings greet Milani exuberantly;, K'del, as she approaches, just grins, drawing his legs back so as to create some more space. "Hey, sure, Milani. Nice afternoon for it." "Oh yeah, definitely. Look at that, melt, here and there. I'll bet tonight will be my last on the ice on the lake," she notes with a wry chuckle and folds up into that space on the bench. "How're you and Cadejoth doing? He looks like he's having a /blast/ out there." She sends another wave in the direction of D'leri and leans into the bench back. "Spring can't be far around the corner, huh?" "Cadejoth'll be sad. He rather liked sliding about on the ice," notes K'del, though he adds: "Wouldn't trust it, now, though. Bit heavy." His gaze shifts back out towards the playing dragons, his expression more musing than amused, despite his affirming nod. "He does love his games," he allows. "We're-- fine. Good. Don't mind winter, but... at this point, with the melt? Think I'd rather it be moving on past, now. It's messy. Anyway. How're you?" "Me too. There's always the high up spots in the mountains though, where it's always winter. You know up near the wastes or just some of the pockets where it's always cold and icy year 'round," Milani notes. "You know. For when you guys can fly." She watches the gamboling and snow-tossing with a grin. "Mm. It's only going to get messier too. Mud is next until it dries out a little later in the spring. We'll get through it though," she says determinedly. "We always do." She tips a look up and over at him, grins. "I'm pretty well, thanks. It was nice getting to see all of you mostly at once the other day, measuring for leathers. Haven't really gotten a chance like that since you were Candidates. Some of you have grown both up and out!" And she holds her mug carefully as she makes arm muscles exaggeratedly. K'del's eyes gleam at the concept of places he'll go when they can fly, and he nods with evident enthusiasm: "Can't wait," he admits. "The mud, though... That's gotta be murder to the caverns. Constant floor cleaning." He runs his hand through his hair, laughing openly at her arm muscles, as he settles back against the chair. "Yeah, I'm sure. Kinda glad there's been no more up for me - but the out?" A nod. He is looking slightly less lanky, these days. "I'm liking that." "Constant floor cleaning, constant 'look out don't slip' signs," Milani replies very seriously though there's a twinkle of good humor in her eyes as she relaxes again, takes a sip from that mug, lifts a hand going up and up. "You do kind of have the whole height thing going on," she replies and then reaches over, finger aiming a poke at his upper arm. "Ohh I'll bet, show off for all the girls, flirt and maybe when he's big enough, score, huh?" teasing. "And constant accidents, because no one ever actually reads signs?" Kas laughs, flexing his arm to show off as Milani aims that poke at him - and winks. "That's the general idea, yeah," he agrees. "'f I can get my face clear, and keep on at these muscles, /weeeeellll/." Despite his wink, there's some hint of seriousness, easy-going, true, but still: intent. "Tiriana seems to doubt my ability to attract any woman, but she's wrong." From his tone: 'like she usually is "Oh yeah. Lots of butt bruises in the spring," Milani jokes back and makes to squeeze that arm briefly, grinning widely for that wink. "Hmm. You do have some issues there," Millie tilts her head back to scrutinize his face. "Is that something you want to try to deal with? I think my mother has some things that might help. But it's all girlie stuff. Would it hurt your manly pride to try a girlie lotion?" Milani's straightforward about that, without being unkind, or at least that's not her intent and there's something about her manner that ought to show that. "Ohhhh so you want to show /Tiriana/ up huh? Well. Good luck with that. She's always changing up the rules it seems. But. See now, that'd be something that I might definitely be interested in. See her eat her words." K'del's hand lifts towards his face, not so much to hide it as to just touch it, feeling the roughness beneath his hand. "By 'girlie', do you mean pink and smelling of flowers, or just the kind of thing girls are always taking so long with when getting ready in the morning?" His cheeks have turned slightly pink, but he's evidently not too uncomfortable with the topic, despite himself. "She does, doesn't she? Drives me nuts. But... yeah, I'd like to. She seemed genuinely unable to cope with the idea that Cadejoth'd catch Iovniath, ever, though." This, at least, draws a healthy smirk, as he drops his hand towards his knee again. "The kind of thing that girls use, not flowery and not pink. More like ... herbs and stuff," Milani explains with a little chuckle. "Don't worry, I'm pretty sure she can get a /plain/ bottle even so /no one/ will know what it is. You can say it's healer stuff if you want." Millie nods sagely and pretends like she doesn't see that blush. "Yeah. She's just so defensive all the time and then mean about it. It drives me crazy. I try to be polite at least, or even nice. Because of some things people have said about her. But man, she really does get my goat." There's a low whistle next though at K'del's words. "Welllll that I can't arrange for you, but there's other things I can help with. Connections, that sort of thing. And well, I'd flirt a little /anyway/ but I can totally do the flirting," Milani offers with bright grin and a light pat for the top of that dropped hand. K'del looks, in an instant, relieved, and nods. "Then... I'd like that. If you could ask your mother? Or I could, though I really only know her by sight." Rolling his eyes, he admits, "That night, after you left? Really lost my temper with her. Said some awful things - not really like me. But." He shrugs. "Worth it." His posture changes slightly as he continues, back straightening, eyes lighting. "Yeeees. Excellent. Suppose I ought to actually, you know, work out what I intend to actually achieve, but... Your help would be much appreciated." "You betcha. Looks like me, curly dark red hair instead of light and straight, about as tall, quite, green dragon, just have Cadejoth bepseak Sionath if you like. But I'm happy to take care of it, she doesn't even have to know it's for you. I'm good at that kind of thing. What's the word? Oh yeah. /Purveyor/. That's me." And Milani looks quite proud of that she does. "What you need, when you need it, and no questions asked. Mostly. Unless I feel like teasing you about it later, but definitely no blackmail," she notes and leans to bump her shoulder lightly against K'del's. His next words though make her wince visibly. "Oh shells, yeah? Ha!" Laughter next. "Well, then, you can count on me," and Milani holds out a hand to shake to seal the deal. K'del accepts the description with a nod, saying, laughingly, "Good thing you're straight as an arrow, else we'd be up to our ears in shady deals, with your talents, Milani. And the power you'd have over people! Thanks. I'd appreciate it, if you could. I'd..." He glances away, admitting, "Rather not let anyone else know that I /care/." His expression is rueful at her response to his earlier words, but amused at the same time. "Much appreciated," he says, grasping her hand to shake, his grip firm and confident. "This'll be good." That statement actually brings a brief shadow across Milani's face and she looks down at her hands, laughs a little. "Yeah. Straight as an arrow, that's me," and her hand sort of traces a straight arrow's path through the air. There's a sidelong look over at K'del and a serious nod. "My lips are sealed and I won't even tease you about it. Besides. I think you're kind of cute even with the spots." Hands are duly shook and her smile returns. "Oh yeah, with both our brains combined? How can we lose!?" Big eyes made at the lad and Millie retrieves her mug. "We should like, toast or something. Will Cadejoth let you have something stiffer than klah?" K'del's brow furrows slightly, not missing that shadow, but he doesn't push a question on it, instead breaking into a laugh: "Why, Milani, thank you. Though I'm sure the spots would do nothing to hinder your own attractiveness." He flutters his eyelashes at her, merrily, though his lips purse slightly for her last question, as he shakes his head. "Alas, no. Well. I bet he'd be okay with it, but rules say no. Not even /light/ beer." Tragic. "Why thank you, K'del," Milani replies merrily herself and then wrinkles her nose a little. "Hmm. Cider then? Not the hard kind. Or are you through with apple things?" And she gives her own mug a little waggle. K'del lets out a long-suffering sigh, as if to say 'oh, if we must', but nods, smiling. "Cider's fine. Still not a /huge/ fan of apples - but the cider isn't too bad. I'll go and get it." He lunges to his feet, not so much fast as just a force of nature, too long to do anything slow and easily. "Oh, all right, well then if you're being a /gentleman/," Milani teases a little and holds her mug out. "I could stand a refill and if you like it doesn't /have/ to be cider. I just like it," she explains with a little laugh and pulls her feet up beneath her, legs crossed on the bench as K'del rises. K'del tips into a little bow as he accepts the mug, noting, "I am /always/ a gentleman. Unless there are no /ladies/ around. Not all women are." Head shaking, he tells her, as he draws himself back up, "Cider it is. Even I get bored of klah sometimes, I'll have you know... particularly when one isn't even allowed to spike it." This last is said with a wink, and, after a moment more, he disappears into the Snowasis to fetch the drinks. "Ohhhh, and what are you when there are no ladies present?" Milani quips back, head tilting a little again, just a hint of coyness in the gesture. "KLah is good when you need to stay awake. Cider, to me just tastes good," she proclaims and beams for that wink, watches him amble off, then returns her gaze to playing dragons and weyrlings, head propped up on one hand as she hums tunelessly. K'del's last word, before he disappears inside, is: "Quite possibly a chauvinist pig. Or then again, maybe not... You'll never know." He's not gone very long, returning with one mug in each hand just in time to see Cadejoth slide muzzle-first into an enormous bank of dirty snow, which draws a wince from the weyrling, just briefly, before he hands Milani's mug back to her and scoots back onto the bench. Those parting words earn a smirk and when K'del returns she lifts a hand to accept the mug back. "Oh oof, that's going to be ... a lot of washing later," she says sympathetically and blows across the top of her mug to cool the hot liquid. "Chauvinist pig, huh? Really? Don't think most women have what it takes?" SHe asks this curiously, no criticism in her tone. "One always hopes that they'll grow out of such games before they get so big, but... No." Kas remarks, wrinkling his nose, as he makes himself comfortable again, his own mug transferred from one hand to the other. "Actually, not in the least." he admits, "I have enormous respect for women. Just like I do for men. They just have to earn it, first. It sort of makes me sad, though, that some women are so intent on proving that they're just as good as men that they won't let a man be a gentleman. Milani listens to this with interest. "That's an interesting way to see it. So basically, you like to treat a woman like a lady, but it's a turn off for you if she doesn't want to be treated that way?" Her head stays propped on her hand, one foot idly swinging off the edge of the bench, mug perching now on her knee, braced by her fingers so it doesn't spill. "And if you need help washing him, you could draft some of the kids. It helps the nannies out to keep them busy. Though I guess it's supposed to be the whole discipline thing of doing it yourself, right?" K'del's expression turns slightly pained, as he admits, "Put it that way, sounds kind of awful. I just... I /like/ looking after women. Doesn't mean I don't respect them on the same level as myself, mostly. It's just kind of sad. Does that offend you?" He's genuinely curious about this, head tilting to the side, his eyebrows raised. "It is, a bit. But at the same time... It's an idea. I'd wash him myself, except that I have to do it so often, because of--" his hand waves towards the romping dragon. "Well. As you see." Milani shakes her head. "No, I was just curious about your point of view. So do you not like it if a woman /can/ take care of herself, but doesn't always? And what about if she wants to take care of /you/?" Millie grins. "Different people have different takes on this. Some girls, they want to just be pampered to within an inch of their lives and hardly lift a finger. I'm more of a ... do it myself, kind of girl, but if a guy wants to do nice things for me, well shells, I'm not going to complain." Big eyes for that one and her mug lifted, sipped from and a nod for Cadejoth-the-messy. "Well think about it. Little crew of rugrats. Very effective. And they h ave fun doing it." She nods wisely. K'del laughs, shifting his mug closer towards his lips, though he blows rather than sips. "I'll take what comes, I guess. I'd rather be allowed to do nice things and - take care of her? Not sure I really like that wording, though. It's more..." He breaks off, words not quite making. "I just like to do nice things, I guess. Be a gentleman." He grins at her, gaze sliding just slightly back towards Cadejoth, as he nods. "I will. Could be really useful. He already gets them to scratch him, sometimes. /Embarrassing/; he's like a big dog with it." "Yeah, I don't think that's a bad way to be and well, who doesn't like having nice things done for them every now and then, right?" Milani's head tips to the side a little. "I get the feeling that you're probably a bit of a force to be reckoned with if you're actually /courting/ and you're still what, sixteen?" Millie makes round eyes at Kas again. Cadejoth is considered again and ultimately she laughs. "Well I think it's adorable. He seems so ... affectionate and earnest." "Exactly!" agrees K'del, with another - probably unconscious - flutter of his long eyelashes. "So. Never hurts. Just, some women see it and assume you're looking down on them, and that's really sad." He winks at her, for her comment, just laughing. "Not even that - sixteen in a few months. But you'd better believe it. I don't like to hear no. And," he grins, "I don't often hear it." 'Adorable' earns a face, if a good-natured one: "He is. He just... never stops, either." That flutter, just earns one of Milani's sweeter, lopsided smiles. "Mm. I suppose it depends on the how too. How you're doing it. And dang Kas, I thought /I/ was bad at fifteen." Laughing, she drops her head back, leans it against the bench back, looking up at the sky. "I like flirting. It's fun. But I don't take it all that seriously anymore." Her head rolls, gaze finding Cadejoth in the snow. "Mm. Well that's something I can understand. Sometimes I have trouble stopping. I go run and run and run around the Bowl. It's starting to be less of a problem though." "And just think," laughs Kas, clearly enjoying this, "When /you/ were fifteen, you weren't supposed to be controlling yourself to watch out for a growing dragon." Shaking his head, he admits, after finally taking a sip from his mug and swallowing it down, "I like girls. Women. All of them. Flirting is fun, but it's better when you're actually successful, even if it's just in getting someone to go for a drink with you. But I bet I wouldn't stop, even if I did have a steady girl." With curiousity evident in his tone, he asks, "Because you're growing out of it, or have other avenues?" "Nope, I wasn't," Milani says seriously. "It's a lot to learn," she continues quietly, looking over at him intently. But then the rest of what he says brings out a laugh. "Mm. I'll agree on that. When I finally went there, couldn't get enough for a little while," Millie says baldly. "And then I got together with the guy I wanted to be steady with all along. And we tried to make it work and for a turn things were pretty good. But I was here and he wasn't and -- yeah. I'm ... trying to sort out what next. Because I like flirting and I like guys." Two peas in a pod? And that question brings more laughter. "I don't know. Maybe I'm slowing down in my old age," she teases. "Yeah," is all K'del says of the learning, his expression relatively unreadable, just a hint of overawedness that he hides as quickly as he can with a genuine, if understated, smile. "I'm sorry - that it didn't work, I mean. Hope it all works out for you. At least there are always plenty of people to flirt with, mmm?" He sets his mug down on the bench in front of him, as he laughs. "Yeah, you're really old, Milani. Surprised you haven't started walking with a stick, yet." That unreadable bit, focuses Milani's gaze a little bit more and she reaches over, aiming to pat his hand lightly. For things not working out she just sighs a little, looks back up at the sky. "Who knows. It could come around again. I still care about him an awful lot. I just -- I don't want to move. I don't want to leave the Reaches and my job. Maybe that's selfish though. I dunno." There's a little pause and then she smiles. "Oh yes. Plenty of flirting. Plenty of opportunties. Just a question of you know, whether or not I want to jump in and take advantage of any of them." Laughter next and Millie sits up, swirls the contents of her mug. "Mm. Next thing you know I'll be hobbling around going 'remember when?'" K'del doesn't flinch away from the touch, giving Milani a lopsided smile instead, though he doesn't add anything, verbally. "I don't think so," he opines. "He's not moving for you, either, after all. So either it'll work out, in time, or it won't and you'll find someone else. I guess." He laughs, adding, "No point not jumping in to life. If something appeals, anyway." He snorts at her last, head shaking as he lifts his own mug back up, sipping at it again. "Careful, or you'll start me stressing out about how old /I'm/ getting." "Mm. That's ... pretty much the sum of it," Milani says after a moment and grins wryly. "Well. Sometimes you do have to be careful," she says slowly about jumping in. "I mean, too much too soon can kill things or if you're friends already and don't want to wreck that's something to think about. But otherwise -- sure." She changes position again, drawing her knees up towards her, heels catching on the edge of the bench, mug circled loosely with both hands. "Oh I'm just playing around," she says laughingly about age. "Neither one of us is anywhere remotely close to old. We're still just kids. It's just I'm a little closer to the whole grownup thing than you are." K'del makes a face, as though warring between being sensible and being fun, but eventually nods. "I suppose. Just seems... so long as you both go in knowing what you want out of it, shouldn't matter, right? Theoretically." He sounds slightly dubious, as though he's not entirely sure on this, perhaps for once admitting, if obliquely, that he doesn't have all the experience in the world - yet. "Well. Not /kids/," he starts, but he laughs. "I guess. Yeah." "Theoretically. I hurt someone actually, even though I thought I was being pretty clear," Milani admits. "We patched it up. That was before I got together with A'son though," she explains then leans over, meaning to nudge him lightly with her shoulder. "Kidding, Kas, kidding. It's just kind of a weird in between time. When I was fourteen and fifteen, I'd just started helping out the headwoman. I thought you know, I kind of had everything under control, what I wanted to do, what I wanted to be. But I didn't. Learned the hard way too. So I guess ... try not to be in too much of a hurry? Because, it goes fast. And then you're almost twenty and people expect more from twenty than they do fifteen." K'del's mouth forms an 'o' shape, a hesitant, thoughtful expression that breaks off as she nudges him, and he laughs, nudging back. "I guess, I guess. Just hate not being taken seriously because of my age. Feel like I'm ready to be looked at like someone who does know what they want. But..." He breaks off, angling his head towards Milani, as if to indicate his acceptance of her words. "I'll try. Do you know what you want, now? Aside from all the-- relationship stuff." "Yeah, I know all about that," Milani says with a little sigh that turns into another laugh. "Not being taken seriously. Just because I was fifteen. At the same time ... well some people were right not to. And I kind of get that, looking back now." There's a little flush of pink in Milani's cheeks for that admission. She bobs her head though an affirmative answer to that last question. "Yes. When Hayda retires, I want to be Headwoman." "Must've been hard to be in your kind of job - where you're in charge of stuff - at that age. Now, too, maybe?" Kas nods as he speaks, nose wrinkling. "When no one wants to take you seriously." Although he's still nodding for her admission, it's hard to know if he's applying any of it to himself, either. "Ah-hah. There's some ambition. Will that be soon, do you think? Or - a longer term goal?" "Well I was you know, the most junior of junior assistants and on probation and all sorts of things like that," Milani says with a little shrug. "There were other older assistants and the point for me was to kind of learn the job. I got more actual real responsibility as I went along and could show I knew what I was doing. Now? Well, I think I've got a good handle on it. I know the Stores better than just about anyone. I understand Hayda's systems and bossing people? No problem." She winks over at Kas and shrugs again. "Probably not. It ... depends, I guess. I mean there's other assistants who've been here longer, so it depends on who Hayda sees as her successor and who it is Satiet and the juniors think would fit the job best." K'del smirks at the 'bossing' comment, amused, but nods more seriously to the rest, thinking over it as he takes another long sip from his mug. Despite his assurance that cider is fine, he still hasn't drunk that much. "Right. So you just have to... do your best, make sure people that matter know you, and trust you, I guess. Do you reckon Hayda'll retire in the next few turns, or will it be longer?" "Exactly. And well, I'm not in a hurry. I still have things to learn. I just think I'd do a good job," Milani says confidently as the last of /her/ cider vanishes down the hatch. "I don't know about Hayda. Sometimes I think it might be sooner rather than later. We'll just have to wait and see." K'del turns his mug in his hands, and laughs. "Better to know what you want, regardless, even if you don't end up getting it. Better than drifting." His nod is sharp, as much as though he's telling this to himself as to Milani. "Oh? She's not that old, but... I guess, sometimes, people've just had enough?" "Yep. And even if it's not soon, I'm happy being an assistant. It's good work. I feel useful doing it and I just plain like it. I like /helping/ people, I like being able to show up with exactly what they were looking for and seeing that smile on their faces," Millie says earnestly. "With Hayda ... well maybe. She's not from the Weyr you know. She's from Tillek. And her family is still there." "That's sweet, Milani. That you like that part of it so much. I like it." Kas is watching her expression, and that earnestness, with fondness more than anything upon his face. "We should all like what we do that much. Ideally, anyway." He frowns at the comment about Hayda, nodding. "/More/ Tillekians. But... harder, as you get older, I guess? I don't know." He glances down at his mug, then out at Cadejoth, who is streaked with filth. "I should get him washed up, before it gets too cold. Want me to take your mug in?" "I couldn't do something I didn't like for long," Milani says with equal confidence. "But yeah, it's part of who I am now too. I can't imagine doing anything else. I mean, I have the right to ask if I can stand because I live here and both my parents are riders, but I don't want to. I think ... what I do is worth more to the Weyr than if I tried to Impress." At 'more Tillekians' she laughs. "Well. It is one of the big holds in our coverage area and not that far away." There's a little pause and then, more quietly. "I think it's more ... a personal thing with her, Kas. If she decides to lay it down sooner rather than later." Millie blinks over thattaway. "Oh! Sure, thanks. And before I forget! That letter! Are we having a bonfire, or toasting to good parents?" K'del's head shakes, and he admits, honestly, "I didn't have anything else I was worthwhile at, so it didn't make the difference with me, but... I think I would have wanted it, regardless. Maybe it'd be different, if I had had something, though. Glad you have your convictions, though." His expression goes more solemn as she speaks of Hayda, and, finally, he nods. "Sad." But: "Oh, the letter! I forgot. No, it was good news. And they're going to try and visit, in the Spring, which would be awesome." Bob bob bob, goes Milani's head. "Well good you found some direction in him then," a tip of her head towards filthy Cadejoth. "And thank you for taking the mug," she notes of said vessel as she stretches up to her feet and looks across the Bowl. "Mm. I think she might be wanting to go home, I guess." And finally her face breaks into a wide, happy smile. "Oh Kas! That's /great/, really. I'm so happy for you." And that, should he hold still for it, will earn him an exuberant hug. "Particularly with all the-- with everything going on in Tillek," concludes Kas, thinking aloud more than actually making distinct statements. He looks briefly overwhelmed by her enthusiasm - but he's in no rush despite his words, and allows himself to be swept into the hug, and squeezes his own arms around Milani in response. "Yeah," he agrees. "I'm pretty relieved. It's-- good." "Yeah. Tillek. What a mess," Milani sighs as she steps back and beams up at K'del. "Good. Very good. Only down side, no bonfire. But maybe we can fix that." And Millie is tapping her finger against her cheek. "Hmm. I'll have to ask I'daur, but maybe we should have a sausage roast or something. Hmmm." And then she laughs turns towards the ramp going downward. "I need to go for a walk. I sat still for too long and then I've got stuff to do. See you later Kas!" As she passes the group of weyrlings, Millie bends to make a snowball, tosses it into the fray and several go sailing after her with much laughter as she makes tracks away around the Bowl. "Oooh, sausage roast," says Kas, but he, too, is on his way - mugs away, and then back to Cadejoth, who seems very reluctant to actually go have this bath, when there is still so much playing to be done. |
