| By the time he made it back into the barracks, exhausted from dancing and filled with the thrilling emotions of the morning, N'ky could feel Cailluneth starting to stir. It was a strange feeling, there in his mind, the heaviness of someone else's sleep lifting layer by layer, like a large, lazy canine stretching away her slumber. He hurried down to the couch he'd chosen as theirs, and had just long enough to sit down and kick off his boots before being greeted by the whirling eyes of his new lifemate. Cailluneth stretched herself out, maw wide, wings flared, paws flexing as she arched her back and drove off the last blissful threads of sleep. N'ky could feel her bright colours in his mind, wordlessly letting him know she was itchy. It was almost impossible to describe how he knew, since she didn't say nor show him, but that particular whirl of colours, and that sound, almost like a beetle's drone, it all came together to give him the perfect, albeit abstract, picture. "Where, Cailluneth?" No need for shyness here; he'd known her mere hours, but the tiny green getting ready to curl into his lap was closer to him than anyone had ever been. « Here. » Her voice was so low, and yet perfectly audible as she clearly let him know her headknobs needed attending to. He waited for her to settle across his crossed legs, before reaching for the bedside oil bucket and dragging it over. N'ky dipped his fingers into the oil, then got to work soothing the itch. As he worked, he could feel her going through his thoughts, his memories of the evening, starting from the most recent and working her way back. One face featured prominently as Cailluneth examined and analysed, bringing back to life the buzz of the living caverns, the sounds of the Harpers and the dancing - lots of dancing! The questioning swirl of colour that surrounded that particular person made him grin, and Cailluneth reciprocated with a burst of happy pink. "Pink?" That choice surprised him, as he could clearly see Cai connecting it with Mave - and she wasn't exactly a pink sort of girl to him. « Yes. Is pink not happy? » "Yes, it is, but..." A shooting star, glass and silver and copper, appeared in his - their - mind, and brought a smile to lips. "That's Mave..." But not pink. N'ky could feel Cailluneth digging deeper, examining down to the tiniest detail of every recent encounter with Mave. It made him uncomfortable as memories of the hours before the hatching surfaced, all a-swirl with colours for sounds, scents, feelings - "C-Cailluneth -" His hesitant plea for her to stop was whispered, quiet enough just for them to her. « Your heart is mine and mine is yours. » "Yes, but -" « My heart is yours and yours is mine. » "But that -" « - is ours, » she completed for him, adopting the sparkle of the shooting star, with its glass, silver and copper, into the warm pink that was now Mave in his mind. A rumble, almost like a purr, filled his mind then, and he could feel Cailluneth drifting back into sleep, happy and itch-free. Once she was fast asleep again, N'ky gently shifted her from his lap, lovingly setting her down on the couch. He could feel her tiredness clouding his mind again, making his movements feel heavy and clumsy as he stripped off his feast outfit and slipped into sleeping attire. He picked up Cailluneth, breathing in the scented warmth of her hide as he held her carefully to his chest, then carried her over to his cot. Moments later, beneath the heavy blanket and with her sleeping peacefully by his side, N'ky gave in to the deepest sleep he'd had in a long, long time. |

Baby dragons-- the real cure for Insomnia!
This was so sweet and wonderful, and N'ky and Cailluneth are so damn adorable. I love how you used her colors, and the shooting star imagery for Mave.
