== Description ==
Hayda is a kindly woman with an average build and dark graying hair most often pulled back. Signs of sadness linger about her warm brown eyes and she is often quiet, though unfailingly polite and correct in her address to others.

== History ==
Born and raised at Tillek, Hayda is the daughter of a journeyman Seacrafter and one of the assistants to the Headwoman at Tillek Hold. Middle of five children, her two older brothers took to the Craft after her father while she and her younger sister followed in her mother's footsteps to work at the Hold. Her baby brother however, several turns younger than the others due to two lost babies in between, was much coddled and indulged and did not go to sea with the rest of the men in his family. Instead he started an informal apprenticeship with the Hold's Harper before Search took Dayvan off to the Weyr where he Impressed blue Rydanth and became D'van.

Hayda's life has been very uneventful, she started working up at the Hold when she was very young, first accompanying her mother as an infant on her back, then as an increasingly able child helper when she wasn't in Harper lessons. Nimble-fingered, Hayda is an exceptionally gifted seamstress. There was talk at one point of her apprenticing to the Weavers, however she met a charming apprentice Seacrafter first and fell in love and married Randin as soon as he walked the tables when she was only seventeen and he barely twenty.

Randin and Hayda settled into a little cothold between Seacraft and Hold just as Hayda's parents had, Randin sailing out with his Craft, Hayda keeping house and working for the Headwoman at the Hold in between babies. Over the next ten turns, Hayda bore six children, four of whom lived to come of age, three sons and a daughter. All three boys followed their father into the Seacraft while daughter Raya took up the Weaver apprenticeship that Hayda herself had given up in order to marry. With her household now empty of children, Hayda's occupation centered around keeping house for Randin and continuing to work up at the Hold until a winter storm robbed her of her husband.

Lonely and grieving, Hayda withdrew a little from her formerly active life and concerned for her welfare, her eldest son wrote to his uncle D'van at the Weyr about the possibility of a visit there. In light of the then-Headwoman's retirement, D'van brought his sister to the Weyrwoman's attention as a possible replacement. Forthwith, the bluerider was asked to bring Hayda to the Weyr for an interview and within the month, she accepted the knot and keys from the Weyrwoman, taking over day to day operations of the lower caverns.

Hayda is a kindly woman, average of build with dark graying hair most often pulled back in a knot at the knape of her neck. Signs of sadness still linger around her warm brown eyes and she is often quiet, though always unfailingly polite and correct in her address to others. Very organized, she's tackling the lower caverns at the Reaches in a very methodical fashion, setting up shifts to take care of things and otherwise get things as 'ship shape' as she used to keeping them in her home and at Tillek Hold. Calmness is Hayda's general mode of operation, dealing out both praise and punishment in the same neutral, almost flat way. Not easily angered, the only things that seem to get Hayda riled up are uncleanliness and slovenliness and even then she is more likely to simply frown a little and quietly tack more duties onto an offender's roster than yell and cause a fuss. She has mastered the art of the quelling Look and staffers and residents alike will probably come to know and perhaps even dread having that look turned upon them when they've fallen down on the job.

Hayda retired from her position as Headwoman at the Weyr early in turn 18 and returned home to Tillek.

For turns, Nabol Hold has been a bastion of conservative thought and traditions. A women's place is by the hearth, a man's place is at the till (or in the case of the aristocracy, at the helm of politics). Supportive of the Weyr throughout the various changes, including the last leadership turnover, Lord Ustelan has long provided stability to his holders, and while many tongues wag about his lecherous proclivities and love of young, pretty things, it would be hard to find anyone in Nabol's territories who has no affection for their Lord.

But now, as Lord Ustelan's seventy-fifth birthday approaches, people wonder just how much longer the old man can live. And of course everyone has their favorites for succession, whether it's themselves or some other favored (or unfavored) son.

This is the story of Nabol Hold.

Apprenticed young, Donatella escaped a fairly poor upbringing in favor of the Hall, whereupon she attached herself to a slightly older, higher-ranking girl and promptly attempted to eradicate her upbringing in favor of adopting as much as she could of the girl's speech, mannerisms, and so on... and getting herself invited home for Turn's End with an eye towards the girl's elder brother. That didn't work out well the first Turn, or the second, but eventually Donatella was just old enough and the boy just interested enough that she got some action and some pretty trinkets to go with the girl's castoff dresses, too.

She really worked to get her senior journeyman's knot, and succeeded. And got her posting to Nabol, which maybe wasn't her preferred posting but still, it's a major Hold. This is her chance. Will she play it safe, consolidating what she's earned, or will she slip back to her old ambitious ways? Will she get caught? She's purposely buried so much of her past (not even her name is quite the same), but will all those old secrets stay dead? And more broadly, just how neutral will she be able to stay?

Nyavah was the long-awaited daughter for the Lord and Lady of Keogh, one of the largest minor holds in the High Reaches area. She was born nearly six turns after the youngest of her four brothers; it's no wonder, then, that she was cosseted and adored from the moment of her birth, never lacking for anything. Not, of course, that anyone in her family ever lacked for anything: theirs may have been a minor hold, but it was a prosperous one, and their lifestyle, as a result, was an indulgent one, reigned by affluence. In the middle of it all, was Nyavah, nothing short of a princess to her brothers and parents, forgiven everything, given anything. Over time, she learned how to school her childish tantrums into more dignified pouts, until there were very few people around her who could not be wrapped about her little finger.

In youth, she surrounded herself with a circle of relatively high born friends, always ensuring that she was in the middle of everything: adored, admired, beloved. She was a relatively benevolent leader, as such things go; after all, she had everything already - she might as well give them something, too. Of course she - and therefore, they - could never forget that she was a lady, and they were not: Nyavah was the queen bee, and any glory they had was any a reflection of hers.

She was fostered to Greenfields Hold at the age of fourteen, and spent two very unhappy turns there: though Greenfields was no bigger than Keogh, they had a number of daughters, and nothing she had impressed any of them. Moreover, the heir to Greenfields she found distinctly disagreeable, particularly when he implied that he was probably the best she could catch - and that that's what everyone expected. She swore then that she would never marry him, and that she'd make a match so good everyone would laugh at the very idea that she might have married him. When she returned home, that had become her sole goal in life: a good marriage. Something perfect.

Obviously, with so many brothers, she was never going to inherit Keogh, and honestly, although she quite liked the idea of being Lady Holder in her own right, she was also not entirely sure of the workload involved; having never really done an honest day's work in her life, it seemed distinctly less than appealing. So, marriage it was, then, and not to some backwater Hold, oh no. She set her sights high. Keogh might only be a minor hold, but she? She was worth far more than that. She spent two turns dismissing every offer made for her; her father loved her far too much to force her into anything, but even he was getting concerned as she refused one potential husband after another. But she would have none of it, not when she felt herself deserving of so much more. No, as she pushed past her eighteenth turnday and towards her nineteenth, her attention had been caught by Nabol. Keogh was beholden to Nabol, so she had visited the Hold once or twice, even knew some of the young people from there, but, more to the point, Nabol's lord was aging, and he had no determined heir... It was perfect.

True, the family bastard, no matter how accepted, was not the kind of husband anyone else would have seen her accepting, but getting closer than that, when she wasn't of a major Hold? It was proving difficult. Anyway, the whole thing had prospects, and if anyone could make it work? She could. And no one would ever see them coming. Thus, even her own family were still reeling in surprise when the engagement was announced (her father initially had concerns; she convinced him he was wrong) - and still, even, when she departed Keogh for Nabol, where she would spend the next turn or so, before the wedding. And so, Nyavah arrived at Nabol, with high hopes.

Life would have been so much simpler if he hadn't been a bastard. No, not the mean way, the old-fashioned way! The Holders of Clear Skies (a large, optimistically-named holding of prime land in the Estay Valley) diligently worked their way through two living sons and a daughter, all of unimpeachable heritage... and then came Fitz (officially named Tarevan, but nobody calls him that except Nyavah, his fiancee'). The stereotypical bouncing baby boy, he was acknowledged happily enough as the natural son of Lord Ustelan (the Lord was visiting, there was a masquerade in his honor, and you know what happens at /those/).

Fitz was raised at Clear Skies Hold until he was five Turns old, at which point he was fostered off to Nabol to give Garrick (barely nine months older than he) a companion, and that sealed /that/. From there, Fitz has gone through a series of tutors, runners and women at Garrick's side, being his right-hand man and aide de camp. Being a Lord's son, he gets a certain cachet. Being a Lord's bastard, among so many men born on the right side of the blanket, he doesn't have to deal with the push to succeed the way Garrick always has had to. He also doesn't have the income or the expectations Garrick does, though he's comfortably off. Fitz's resources include a certain amount of access to Nabol Hold's stores through residency and fosterage, an allowance from his parents, and the income from a minor hold thanks to his natural father. (The hold is currently controlled by his mother's husband, and is just off the border of his lands, effectively extending Clear Skies Hold's territory and no doubt making the "honor" of being cuckolded by a Lord a more tolerable one.)

There was also no hurry to marry him off, particularly after his first fiancee', Quellia, died two months before the wedding when her spear broke during boar-hunting. Now he's engaged to Nyavah, who seems pretty enough from her miniature and pleasant enough from her letters (and who doesn't seem to be the boar-hunting sort). Fitz fully expects to get married and have some kids and a girl on the side, and generally keep on with his comfortable life.

Harlow was born to Yisara, one of Frieja's childhood friends and chief companion to Sattle's Lady Holder. While Harlow was raised largely at Sattle, frequent visits to Nabol put her in contact with Frieja's children and when she came of age, a pairing between her and Frieja's second son, Wildar, was made. They married on a pretty spring day and less than a turn later, their son Carsom was born. They were the very picture of a happy family: an adored son of the Lord, with his lovely bride and a healthy son, it was even possible that Wildar could have been in the running for succession should opinion turn toward the sons of the Lady Holder and not the Lord's first born. But all this promise was to come crashing down.

Carsom was barely toddling around when Wildar fell ill. A long, hard year passed while he wasted away and Harlow was rarely far from his bedside. During this time, she grew quite close to Frieja as they bonded in grief. And so came another blow when Frieja died not a turn later.

It was obvious to the family, during these dark times, that Harlow and Wildar had true feelings for one another, her attentiveness during his illness and his own pleading with his family, to promise that they take care of his young wife and child, seemed to be plenty of proof that their marriage was one of love. Since then, some degree of slack has been allowed for Harlow's more decadent behavior, assuming that her habits of indulgence, on herself and those around her, are meant to ease the pain of losing people so dear to her. Of course, there are others who think she has been milking it for too long, who think she leans too much toward indecency and who suspect she has some ambition toward fortitous positioning of herself and her son. Really, who can tell?

Tisdan came into the world with less than auspicious beginnings. He would be the last child of Ustelan and his first wife Marisse because the Lady Holder died giving birth to him. While not anything he could have helped, his father always held him responsible for the Lady's death. Tisdan was put into the care of Ustelan's sister, Umara, and her husband, Marsen, to be raised with their children.

It worked out well for everyone for a time. Until Tisdan, fourteen, arranged for himself to be taken to High Reaches Weyr on Search days before the hatching. It would be his way out, or so he thought, and he wouldn't have to live in the shadow of his undeserved disfavor anymore. When he walked off of the sands as T'dan, rider of bronze Lycoth, he found that his disfavor had become much more deserved.

Ustelan didn't openly rebuke his son, however, and instead made it seem like his own idea. It couldn't have happened to a better son, after all, (one that he wasn't particularly fond of anyway) and a bronze spoke highly of the Holder's blood. T'dan was left to be a dragonrider in relative peace and he grew into a well respected man at the Weyr.

Peace can only last for so long, though. A threadfall midway through the comet pass would prove fatal for bronze Lycoth but not for his rider. Tisdan was injured and mostly unconscious for several weeks. He would have rather stayed unconscious, too, but he didn't. Fulling realizing the extent of his loss, Tisdan was distraught and the grief caused by the sight of the Weyr's dragons drove his oldest daughter, Adissa, to petition his return to Nabol. Selfish or not, she wouldn't allow him to end his pain through suicide.

His recovery was a slow one and probably wouldn't ever be quite complete, but Tisdan did what he could to fill the huge, gaping hole that Lycoth left behind. Adissa stayed near him almost always to help keep him on the right track. She was one of the few people who could (usually) rein him in when he went off the deep end.

Despite his sometimes unpredictable condition, Tisdan began acting as a sort of unofficial advisor when it came to Weyr relations. Six turns after the death of his dragon and he could even stand to look at them again from time to time. Although well known that Tisdan himself had little desire to claim himself heir, there were rumors that he favored one of his own sons and still more that he would just as soon see his siblings dead before accepting them or their offspring as heirs. But who really cares what a crazy ex-dragonrider thinks?

Ofelia was born the oldest daughter of Hebrides Seahold, which is tiny and insignificant except that her mother was some sort of third cousin to Nabol's blood. Her parents had a great romance, at least considering their circumstances, and then settled into a mutual affection that left little room for attention to their four children.

Seahold life was not something Ofelia was suited to. She nearly drowned when she was five, and after that would not go near the water except when forced, and got badly seasick when they made any attempt to take her out sailing. When she was eleven, her mother finally arranged for her to be fostered back to Nabol.

She was certainly not important enough to rate spending time with direct lines, but she managed to settle into a nice little coterie of girls where she was, despite not being the prettiest or the highest-born of them, somehow always the center of attention. And that was how she attracted the attention of Denys. One of the grandsons! It was a coup, for a fifteen-turn-old girl from her kind of background.And he was sweet, and he said all the right things, and when they fumbled in the dark he swore he'd never done that with anybody else. And despite the odds, two turns later he was still there, still bringing her little presents, still sneaking off with her when the opportunities presented themselves.

They were married when she was seventeen and he eighteen. If Agustin was born a little premature, well, he was certainly a healthy little boy. Extremely healthy, for a month and a half early.

Things soured slowly, almost too slow to notice. Denys had no ambition and no idea what to do with the new responsibilities that a family presented. He was often out late. He took little interest in his son, or the two daughters who followed over the next four turns. But he still brought Ofelia gifts, said he loved her, did all the right things there. If he took no interest in the children, well, they were just babies. Her father had never cared for babies, either.

Turns of the same descent. He, out more and more, making fewer romantic gestures. She, learning what time of the month to turn him away at last, focusing on her children, having to do more and more to try to make sure that Denys arrived and was presentable at family events. To the outside world, though, they still looked perfect. He still knew how to smile and pretend to be doting in public. She still knew how to smile and pretend to be madly in love. The children were beautiful. They were so happy, didn't everybody know how happy they were? Only the immediate family knew this wasn't true, and Kisare attempted to convince her to take the children and go back to Hebrides.

She was sure he was having an affair. Possibly a lot of them. Every day she was thankful that there was no girl showing up pregnant and demanding. The fragile balance was maintained. Denys spent increasing numbers of nights in a room on the lower floors, but he was rising early to come back upstairs and present every image that of course he was still living with his wife and children. (Never mind how many people knew otherwise by that point; it was a polite fiction.) Then, in the summer of turn 19 of the interval, she decided she was going to fix things. She prettied herself up as much as she could and, early one morning, went to find him.

She found him. There was screaming. Ofelia's life shifted forever.

She knows that people say that it was Denys who found her with a young man. And she doesn't contradict it, although she won't lie and say it's true, either. She knows the truth, Denys knows, and Huelet and Kisare know--but that may be about it, although there are certainly others who suspect. Denys is back living in their quarters. For a supposed cuckold, he presents publicly as being more devoted to her than ever. And Ofelia, she endures the whispers and makes sure that Denys looks good, because she knows that the time is coming when that may matter.

Women should know their place. Now if only someone were brave enough to tell Ustelan's oldest daughter Onni that. A shrew of a woman, she was early married off to the second son of Lord Keroon, a quiet, shrinking man that her family felt would give her no advantage in Keroon's court.

Unfortunately, no one counted on Onni and her new husband not leaving Nabol at all. Izan was given a fair-sized stake in Keroon's lands by his father, but the management of that land has stayed in the hands of its steward ever since. Onni refused to leave her home and her family, and Izan did not argue much, though he never felt really part of Nabol's family. Onni, as one of the oldest of Ustelan's children, felt she should have more say in the Hold's running, and if she couldn't be Lady herself, then she resolved to make her first son that.

But it wasn't quite so easy. While she might have gotten an earlier start on pregnancy than her older brothers Huelet and Anders, Onni lost several pregnancies (and even one son before he reached a turn) before she finally managed to give birth to Garrick. Subsequent pregnancies also failed, and the continued strain led Onni to finally give up and pin all her hopes for her future standing on her one surviving child, Garrick. But it was too late to call him heir: Huelet's wife had had a son herself, four turns earlier.

With his mother always pushing him toward outshining his older cousin, toward impressing his grandfather the most, Garrick early started to rebel. He said whatever he thought, but while a child, this only made him more favored by his older relatives. Eventually, though, he outgrew this stage: what's cute in a chubby-cheeked teenager is not so cute in a too-tall teenager who once broke into the Lord's wine cellar just to smash several very expensive bottles.

Such overt displays of rebelliousness, however, faded as Garrick grew older. He grew more bored with the constant politics of Hold life and didn't even consciously rebel anymore, didn't try so much at all to irritate his family. Instead, he became more preoccupied with entertaining himself, and if those entertainments caused consternation in the ranks, well. How else is a young rich boy to occupy himself, if not with wild oats? Sowing them's the closest thing to honest work Garrick's likely to ever get.

Of course, just because Garrick's not a frontrunner in the battle for Heir doesn't mean his mother's given up. Onni remains an overbearing presence, always interfering and trying to walk over him like she does her husband Izan. Garrick, for the most part, ignores her, though he often wishes Izan would just man up and slap her down already. Garrick won't because she's his mother; Izan won't because... well, he's just not that kind of guy. He's wasted away, mentally if not physically, at Nabol over the turns, retreating into himself and his horses, the closest thing to being back at Keroon. Garrick's contempt for his father is well-known.

Milani, obeying (mostly), quit keeping the list but did not destroy it as asked. It went missing.

In early spring, a "hidden" cavern was discovered, refurbished, and given to the Vijays for use as a storage cavern for their goods. It starts to seem that their stay isn't exactly as temporary as it might have originally seemed, huh? Some quiet rumblings indicate distrust of the traders, with a few people reporting missing items coincidentally around the time these shifty-seeming folks infiltrated the Weyr. But they've also brought a burst to the economy by way of bonuses in paychecks, discounted goods, and a general upswing in day-to-day life for the folks of High Reaches Weyr.''

When they say people have a right to a speedy trial, they probably don't
mean this. Barely two weeks after their captures, High Reaches' raiders
have been found unaminously guilty of crimes against Weyr and Hold, with
sentencing to be carried out immediately.

The morning of the 17th day was spent busily transferring prisoners about.
The low-level dupes, like that Jamden kid the Weyr already caught once,
were sent to Crom and its mines to work a few years, while the higher-ups
in the organization--the inner council and recruiters like the kid's
uncle--received life sentences to those mines. For however long or short
the rest of their lives might be.

As for the ringleader of the whole operation? Rajiv's sentence was carried
out in the afternoon, after all his cronies had been disposed of. Just
outside the Weyr, Rajiv Vijay's final tirade against the Weyr was cut
short by a sudden drop: hung by the neck until dead.

And somewhere in the midst of all these criminals being put away, one man
was released. Chedayi, a low-level Vijay sent to the mines for crimes
against the Weyr which have since been reattributed to Rajiv, was pardoned
before the day was out.

With the collective attention of the Weyr turned toward their Sands, the
"new friends" they've made recently have reared their heads again. On the
night of the Hatching, taking time to work its way out to the Weyr now
that the roads are muddy messes, a waystation near Nabol was sacked by
people who, it was eventually determined, must be related to those that
have been raiding the Reaches' tithes the past weeks. Late in the night,
all clad in black, they looted the stores, loading it into one of the
waystation's own wagons for transport. The following morning, the Nabolese
realized that one of their sons had been taken in the raid, a boy in his
late teens, quite the promising lad. All hopes are that he's being held
for ransom and not just in a ditch somewhere. The following day, a string
of similar raids happened at smaller farmholds off the main road; by all
indications, the culprits were headed back toward the Reaches itself,
though they seem to have disappeared off the map, with no sign of them by
sweeps riders in the area.

All hopes that the botched raid, the one that arrived in tact with Reaches
riders escorting it, had put an end to the thefts are now officially
dashed. The glass-half-full people keep remarking that, with winter
closing in, a respite must be coming. The glass-half-empty people just
point out that it'll be that much more miserable to catch a thief in a
snowstorm.

After the Nabol Harvest ended, High Reaches seemed to have misplaced a few
of its riders. To the careful eye and to anyone who can add one and three
together, it would seem that there are several riders from Glacier off
duty, Leova and A'son amongst them. If asked, the answer seems to be that
they're off surveying land in Crom for some pet project of the
Weyrleader's, whatever /that's/ supposed to mean. They aren't off nursing
hangovers after partying too hard. Really.

"Wait, all the /beer/ got stolen?!" Not an uncommon cry in the lower
caverns on the evening of the 23rd, when word got out that a tithe train
bound for the Reaches from Tillek was sacked overnight. While it's not
common for holdless to turn criminal, it's not exactly as rare as it was
20 Turns ago to hear of some little farmhold or some poorly guarded tithe
or trader train getting sacked, but the fall tithe from Tillek? The facts,
as can be sorted from the rumors:

--The attack took place a day out of Tillek, when the train stopped for
the night.
--There must have been about thirty people involved, though the chaos of
the events prevented anyone from getting a head-count. No one saw any of
the attackers, so no one can provide a description, but there are rumors
of male and female voices being heard.
--The entire wagon containing the Tillekian tithe of beer, ale, spirits,
all that lovely stuff was jacked. Also taken was a second wagon, the
contents of which were first offloaded to be replaced with anything of
marginal value: fabric, furniture, and most of the saltfish.
--No word yet from the Tillekian leadership.

Hot on the heels of losing a portion of the Tillekian tithe, even with
Edeline and Potipher promising to send what extra their Hold can spare to
the Weyr, there's yet another slap-in-the-face. Among the last expected to
arrive before winter shuts down the roads, the High Reaches Hold tithe
train was sacked under nearly identical circumstances. Purportedly trying
to make up time after a late start by pressing on after sunset, the train
was besieged just at the edge of the sweeps region for the Hold, also set
upon in the dark. The facts, again, remain muddy and insubstantial:

--A wagon bearing the pricier items of brandy and glassware was offloaded
of anything of sub-par value and used to ferry precious cargo.
--Most of the wool was stolen this time, including that which had already
been spun into yarn and dyed before being sent on to the Weyr.
--No one was injured beyond a few guards, who were knocked on the head,
bound, and tossed into the back of a wagon for "safe keeping;" though
there were extra guards sent with the train after what happened to Tillek,
the thirty-odd thieves were quick, efficient, and seemed to know exactly
which wagons they were after.

Supportive of the Weyr throughout the various changes, including the last leadership turnover, Lord Ustelan has long provided stability to his holders, and while many tongues wag about his lecherous proclivities and love of young, pretty things, it would be hard to find anyone in Nabol's territories who has no affection for their Lord.
