Sabella has been scarce the last couple of days. When she's not in lessons or taking care of Ghislaith, she's been studying. This was something that typically used to be reserved for after dinner, but lately it's been after lunch as well. Currently she's tucked away into a quiet nook of the records, the Big Book of Important Pern History spread out in front of her. Her often seen journal is pushed to the side for now and another more new looking book for writing is in her hands. She's making notes in that slanted, strange handwriting. There's no sign that she's paying attention to much else, her focus intent on the self-proscribed extra work.

K'zin has been on the hunt. For over a sevenday now, he's been trying to catch Sabella for an exchange that lasts longer than "Hey!" "Bye!". He's been looking at her more often during the boring lectures (though engaged for the interesting ones), but they've not gotten a moment together since their trip down the tunnels. The bronze weyrling's purpose here today, though, is not specifically to find Sabs; it's just a perk. He comes in with arms full of scrolls and map cases. He stops to check in with the record room attendant who takes a few moments to look over the condition of what he's got before accepting them for reshelving. Weyrlings are not to be trusted! A few more words are exchange and K'zin is set loose in the room, following the point of a crooked finger. It brings him over to where Sabella sits. "Oh. It's you." This is too loud, and he gets a "Shh!" and a menacing look from the record keeper. Sheepish smile is then turned on Sabs. "I was coming to look for that book. Glad I found you ''with'' it."

And at first it was probably just coincidence, but somewhere along the way her "Hey!" "Bye!" started to lose some of that eye contact. Maybe around halfway through the seven. Though she hasn't been anything less than polite the entire time. Writing in her notebook, she purses her lips and flips back a couple of pages to go over a particular passage. Sabella pauses mid-sentence when the sound of his familiar voice reaches her ears, as well as that "Shh!" that echoes across the cavern of scrolls. Looking up slowly she hazards a quick smile for his sheepish one. "Do you need it now? I'm almost done with it for the afternoon." Her eyebrows lift questioningly and she hurriedly jots down a few more things in case he needs it.

Let's face the facts: K'zin is dense. But even a dense pretty boy eventually starts to understand when happenstance becomes purposeful avoidance. The other downside to dense is that they don't know how to take a hint. So it is that K'zin gives a little shrug to his shoulders, and reaches for a nearby chair, pulling it away from the desk it was tucked under to turn it around and sit on it backwards. His arms fold over the top of the back and he watches Sabs. "I can wait," is his quiet and patient response. Clearly, though from his guard dog posturing, she's not going anywhere until he has the book, or is that really what he wants?

Sabella nods and lapses into silence as she takes the time to write out some more notes carefully. She checks them over quickly before closing the cover to the heavy volume. Whereas other girls would recognize that guard dog stance and start to become a little nervous, that doesn't happen with her. At least it isn't a visible thing if she does. She smiles brightly at him instead and pushes the book across the table. "All yours, that wasn't so long." Cheerful, she pushes her chair back and begins to collect her things off of the table. Book, pencils and anything else are tucked into her little canvas bag. The only tell might be the way she worries against that lower lip with her teeth, rising to stand.

Like a good guard dog, K'zin is up as soon as she's pushing her chair back, ignoring the volume that was pushed across to him and he's moving over to her side of the desk. "Can I help you carry your things back to the barracks?" He inquires, tone polite, manner mild. One of the other problems with dense: you know ''something'' is up, but you don't know ''what''.

Sabs swings the handle of the canvas bag over her shoulder, letting it sling comfortably into place. He's standing now and she's glancing around his shoulder, noting whatever might be behind him. "Oh, no. I'm alright, I just have this with me. Don't forget your book? Someone will end up borrowing it instead of you." She cautions, using her conversation as a distraction while she moves to slip past him.

K'zin's hand reaches quickly, but gently, to catch her hand. "Sabs." His words are hushed, and here in this public place, he doesn't let his grip linger. He holds it just long enough to be sure she's not going to run off on him... ''again''. "What's going on?" The tone is imploring and bewildered. His innocent brown eyes blink down at her face, trying to find the answer in her own. "One second we're sneaking away down tunnels and the next-- you're avoiding me? What gives?" Beat. "Ras said Ghislaith wasn't hurt by anything. Was he wrong? Should I be apologizing?"

Sabella wasn't looking at him as she was trying to slip past. Because it probably is that much easier to leave a person if you're not making any eye contact. Stayed by the grip on her hand, she pauses her steps and exhales. "Nothing is going on, I just have to clean up before dinner." Her tone is light and she adjusts the strap of the bag. "I'm not-" She stops, maybe because it feels wrong to lie right when he's sounding so bewildered. So instead she settles for just not answering the question, which should work out well. Sucking in her breath, she hazards a glance up at him. "Ghislaith is fine. You don't have to apologize for anything."

"Why are you lying?" K'zin's tone is not really accusatory, but it is hurt. He's dense, not an idiot. Brown eyes continue to bore into her face, trying to make sense of this nonsense. His voice lowers from murmur to whisper and he leans down a little closer to ask in a voice ''full'' of worry. "Am I really ''that'' bad at kissing?" The question is posed very seriously, then back to the murmur as he babbles, looking a little helpless, "I know I'm inexperienced, but I promise I could learn. You could teach me. Or not," Beat. Then, slower: "- since you don't seem to have liked it." Sad face. He chews on his lower lip, shoulders drooping.

"Because I'm ''trying'' to be a good friend." Which is really pretty contrary sounding. Sabs seems to know it too and her shoulders sink down, helpless and rooted to the spot by the seemingly endless sad stare from him. It quickly begins to transition to frustration and a comment that's not actually directed at him. "This isn't fair." He's closer now and she reluctantly tips her chin up to look at him. The babbling is probably what tips her over the edge and she raises a hand, putting a couple of fingers to his mouth to get him to just stop. "You're not bad at it. I ''really'' did like kissing you, I want to do it again. I really do and I don't want to be avoiding you but I talk-" Something holds her back and she chews on her lower lip in the meantime as she formulates whatever would have come next. The rush of words stops and she does look sorry for it.

That first has his head spinning again. His expression is plainly puzzled. The look doesn't lessen with her fingers on his lips, but instead it grows. It's possible to watch the thoughts process: We're friends. I'm not a bad kisser. She ''is'' avoiding me. I'm ''not'' crazy. K'zin waits until she cuts off, and his brows are knitting. "You talk? We are friends, aren't we? Friends who sometimes sneak down tunnels and kiss?" Obviously, he's not suffering boyish delusions about Sabs being his one and only or anything like that. "I don't understand." He confesses plainly this time.

Sabella withdraws her hand and wraps her arms around herself, tugging on her sweater. With a sigh, "No, I ''talked''. With a friend and I ended up feeling really guilty and just, bad. In general, I guess. I didn't know what to do with it, so I've just been avoiding you so I didn't have to think. It was easier." She admits, glancing away from him and looking guilty. "We are friends. I'm sorry that I made you feel badly."

Some amount of distress shows in K'zin's face when she pulls her hand away, more as she relates her feelings of late. One hand reaches to wrap around her smaller one. "Sabs..." He breathes softly, brows knit, looking like they'll pop free and knot together at any moment. "I'm sorry what happened with us made you feel guilty-- and bad." He chews his lower lip harder now, not enough to break skin, but the agitation he feels is clear in the small movement. "Is there anything I can do to make you feel-- not like that?" Teenage girl in any degree of distress is something quite foreign to him, so all he knows to do is to stand there... looking awkward.

"I didn't feel guilty and weird at all until I talked to someone ''else''." That frustration from earlier returns and she shakes her head, pushing it away now. "This is idiotic. And my fault, I'm sorry." Sabella is looking past his shoulder again, watching that scribe at the desk. Is he ''really'' paying attention? And as for the few other people lingering around the records before dinner? A cursory glance. She reaches up and takes a handful of his shirt into her slender fingers and steps back, meaning to pull him with her further into the shelves if he'll let her. If he's not ''too'' dense to figure it out. "Let's reset?"

K'zin stumbles a bit. He wasn't expecting it, but once his motor functions have caught up to what's going on, he's moving gracefully with her, deeper into the recesses of the records room. "Yeah, okay." Beat. "But... can we talk about something first?" He's too young to know to just say YES and run with what you've got. "What's happening here... with us... it's between ''us'' right? I haven't-- well, okay, I did tell someone, but not someone I'm close to and it was really only because I couldn't get her to answer me any other way," Not that he tried hard. He blushes. "But I didn't even tell N'ky, 'cause I thought-- Well, I thought that this was ''ours''. I don't know if this is something that would happen between us if we weren't here, in this place, in this situation, I'd like to think so, but I don't know. I figured worrying about what it was or what it wasn't would just-- ruin it. Has it? For you?" He's expression continues to be concerned as he babbles quietly, brow finally rising in inquiry at the end.

Talk about something first? That's not what usually happens when you get to this point. It's Sabella's turn to look well and truly confused now. Her fingers are still laced up in his shirt, but they're not pulling him to her anymore. Not quite anyway. "You told someone else? Who?" She's arching one eyebrow at him. And then, "You didn't tell N'ky?" That has disbelief catching in her voice. "But he said- and I ''asked'' him if you-" They're both half sentences and it might be obvious that she's running something over in her mind again. Her gaze drops away from him and she exhales, her fingers starting to loosen up. "I thought that you told him." That comes as a quiet murmur that he might not hear if he talks over her. "K'zin, I haven't been thinking about it that hard. We're not in another place, we're here. Right now. You're really- I like being alone with you. It's not ruined."

Now it's once more K'zin's turn to look confused. He skips the first question about who he told-- maybe she won't notice? -- in favor of saying, "No. I didn't tell N'ky. He said what? I told him I liked you and that I ''wanted'' to kiss you. But that was before--" Instead of finishing the sentence, his hands flutter between them to indicate the things that have happened between them. Fingers loosening on his shirt? This is surely a bad sign even K'zin can read. His hands come up to grasp her hands. "I thought you didn't ''tell'' people when you break the rules? I-- N'ky is my ''best friend''. But he follows all the rules," As K'zin once did, "-and I'm not sure he'd understand. Especially since things-- well-- nevermind. They got weird. But it's fine. It ''will be'' fine." But not yet. "What did he say? Is he the reason you've been avoiding me?" Understanding is starting to clear away the clouds of puzzlement. His hands tighten, not harshly just firmly. "I like being alone with you too. I like not thinking hard about this. I just-- I like it." This is confessed in a tone of innocence, that if it were anyone other than K'zin, might be a play to get the girl, but with him, it's just truth.

"''Who'' did you tell, K'zin?" Sabs repeats the question, since he must have not heard her the first time she asked it. She's looking up at him much more intently for it now. "No, you're not supposed to tell anyone when you break the rules. That's how you get caught, how people know you're a rule breaker." And while it might be fun to go against authority, it's more fun to not get caught doing it. She knows. "You're not talking to him again or-?" She's appearing confused again, the ups and downs of their friendship is difficult to keep up with apparently. "He said- No. I promised him that I wasn't going to say anything and I'm not going to. It's not his fault that I was, I thought he knew. I misunderstood how he answered my question. He just wanted to help both of us." She shakes her head and sighs, squeezing his hands when he catches hers up again. Her smile eventually manages to make an appearance and she leans in to him. "Me either. It's alright for us to just enjoy it, I think. Thinking hard can come later, maybe." Maybe.

"Later. Or never." K'zin seems to be more of a fan of the latter option. His look is suddenly sheepish. "Well, that was sort of the point. To look like a rule breaker." He coughs. "I wanted to know something, and she wanted a secret for a secret." Beat. "But she said she likes to break rules too, so I don't think she'll ''tell'' anyone." He says this last bit hurriedly, as though to reassure Sabs that the secret is still safe. "It was Jo. I was talking to her-- and... yeah. Like I said. I wanted to know something and she wanted a secret for a secret." He looks even more chagrined now. "I don't really break any other rules. Yet." Once the green weyrling is leaning in, his arms wrap around her in a very natural fashion. He embraces her lightly. So perfect is his sense of timing that it is in this moment that his worried face prompts him to ask: "Would-- would it matter to you if I'd kissed someone else right before Hatching? I mean, would it hurt you?" Here he goes trying to make it more complicated again.

"No, no. You never want to look like a rule breaker. Then they start to watch you and it's harder to break the rules and get away with things." Sabella's eyebrows draw together as if this should all be very obvious, common sense even. For his explanation on who he told, she's intent. Listening, her shoulders a little tense until he finally comes out with the name. She breathes out, though she doesn't outright acknowledge recognition of the name. "I hope she gave you a good secret in return for that one." With his arms around her, she lifts herself onto her toes and drapes hers around his neck. Her usual easy demeanor seems to be taking root again and she smiles, but ends up faltering and then looks puzzled again. K'zin really ''does'' have perfect timing. "Would it matter to me if you kissed someone before the Hatching? Like who? The girl you and N'ky both kissed? Or is there ''another'' one? You really get around, don't you?" She almost looks like she wants to laugh. "I don't think so? We weren't like this until last seven, so?"

"I don't think she thought it was a very worthwhile secret. Apparently, we didn't ''do'' enough for it to be interesting." K'zin comments of his conversation with Jo. "Then again, from what I gather, there's not one piece of my life to date that would qualify as ''interesting'' to a woman like Jo." There's a little wistfulness there; it's the good boy who longs to be a rebel, but just isn't. At least not yet. Perhaps not ever. He's making headway with this little rebellion. He's lip-biting again as his cheeks burn scarlet. "Another one." He mumbles, looking down between the two of them, then abruptly up and towards the ceiling (since down between the two of them there's a view of Sabella's body, and that just spells doom for any quasi-intelligent conversation he's currently managing). "Maybe that's what N'ky was worried about. We were talking about stuff. Relationships. I said something he maybe didn't like, or didn't agree with anyway." His arms tighten a bit about her, as though he's getting in his last hug, ''just in case''. "Thing is... I'm supposed to take her on a date after -- well, when we're allowed." Now he's nervous as he asks, "Would ''that'' bother you? Because I don't want to do something that'll-- bother you. Not like that. If it would."

That makes her laugh and Sabella ducks her head. "No, I don't imagine it would be enough for her. Of course we could always work on ''that'' if you wanted." She teases challengingly, the aim being to turn his cheeks even redder if that's at all possible by this point. And whatever N'ky might been worried about, she keeps her mouth sealed. Because she ''did'' make a promise to their friend about not repeating anything. His arms tighten around her and she looks a little wary, until he explains that point of worry. Her eyebrows furrow together, thoughtful. Thinking back on something, way back maybe. "Azaylia? You said that she said yes to a date with you. The day that I first met you. Or is there ''another'' one that's not one of the Weyr's goldriders? Just how many girls are there?" But that wasn't exactly the question, was it? "I don't know if it would bother me. We kissed once, I can't seem to get you to kiss me again at all tonight. And you want to know if I'm going to have my feelings hurt about a date that hasn't happened yet?" There might be a touch of exasperation, light as it is.

It ''isn't'' possible for him to get redder. But the duration increases, the color lingering until he starts laughing. Then it starts draining as the wide smile seems to push the unneeded blood out of its way, though cheeks remain rosy. What's he laughing about? Well, it's half relief and half amusement. He nods to the question of Azaylia, then shakes his head to the question of other girls. Sabs just has a way of making him see how dumb he's actually being (at least in this instance). A quick glance towards the aisle has him hesitating. "Don't you think we'd get caught kissing here?" There's the goody-goody in him coming out to ruin the fun - or at least raise a cogent point. "And I ''do'' want to kiss you again. I really, really, ''really'' do." That last 'really' is so fervent it's practically religious. "But, um, Sabs?" Now he's awkward again and his voice drops to a whisper, "Ras won't like me saying so, but he didn't understand everything I was feeling when we kissed before. So if I kiss you again, you'll have to help me not-- not push him too far for what he can handle?" He winces, "He thinks I'm blowing it. Right now. Am I?"

"Ask me the question later, when it's closer to actually happening." Sabella requests gently, her arms still linked around his neck lightly. She raises onto her toes again to peek over his shoulder to the aisle for her question. "We could totally get caught kissing in here." She agrees easily, not arguing the point with him at all. "That makes it more exciting. But I don't think that we will." And that's either true assurance or some sort of bravado on her part, because she's very breezy about it. Bringing her gaze back to him again, she's expectant for this next round of questioning. "We're not going to go any further than we went last time, we'll be very careful." And then, a beat later and with a much amused smile. "Tell Rasavyth that he doesn't know anything about women."

It's too tempting to resist. Woman, danger, threat of discovery. The thrill of it all is intoxicating. Such things are always intoxicating at the start. K'zin is delighted, an looks it as she practically dares him to chance it. "Fair enough." His response has traces of the purr so often heard in Rasavyth's voice. Then he's dipping his head, seeking her lips to fulfill the implied dare. His arms tighten again around her, pressing the pair of them body to body.

Dragon> To Ghislaith, Rasavyth's invisible patterns of ooze freeze; static. Then the tiny transparent machines that build his every thought and plan start working in over-drive. << I do not know ''anything'' about women? >> He doubts it. The doubt is communicated in the voids of his touch. << My ''K'zin'' does not know ''anything'' about women. I know ''something'', but not all things. >> There's frustration for that and a plea for pity: look who he's learning from!

She's really not a good influence on him if he's trying to walk a line between rebel and being a good weyrling that follows the rules. There's delighted, indulgent laughter from her when he tightens his arms and presses them so closely together. She sinks against him in that hold and presses her mouth back to his, same as the last encounter. Well, this time Sabs might be giving him a little more to remember next time in the way she leans into the whole affair and teasingly nips at his lips when they eventually part.

Dragon> Things have been locked up tight around there lately. But for the sound of Rasavyth's frustrated, pleading voice? Ghislaith will crack the windows open, attentive listening to his words. Then with a sigh, the doors opens with a loud squeak of rust. << What do you ''think'' you know? >> She's not exactly soothing, but she's not antagonizing him either. (Ghislaith to Rasavyth)

Her laughter complicates the kiss, because it has him smiling ''huge'', and kissing and smiling at the same time just doesn't work as well as kissing without giant smiles and laughter. But this is certainly fun. The laughter draws footsteps, and the saving grace is that with the kiss not quite so passionate as fun, K'zin still has enough sense to hear it and stay in the embrace ''just'' long enough to get the nips, but not long enough to get caught. By the time the records clerk gets to the end of the row the two of them are down, K'zin is facing the same direction as Sabs, reaching for a book on the top shelf, "This one?" He asks innocently, giving an appropriately apologetic look to the record keeper when she coughs at the end of the aisle, the suspicious look no doubt for the laughter of moments before.

Dragon> << I- >> Static. Freeze. Beat. Beat. Beat. Finally. << I know that not all women are the same. >> That took him longer than it should have and the little bugs scatter, the ooze scattering, confused, directionless, at a loss. (Rasavyth to Ghislaith)

Her smile at the end when they break apart says it all, the awkwardness at the beginning was so worth it. Sabella runs her fingers through her short curls, a flush on her cheeks now. Smiling brightly at the record keeper, she turns to K'zin and takes the book out of his hands. She flips through a few pages. "Oh, yes. This is just the one that I was looking for. The Complete Dissertation of Jolak the Poet." The look she shoots him is full of false gratitude as she reaches out and tugs on his sleeve, urging him to exit the aisle with her and return to the table they abandoned. She doesn't make any eye contact wth the records worker when they pass her, even if the woman must know. "Don't forget your book, you need it." Sabs reminds him, adjusting her bag.

Dragon> There's the long sigh of tired, creaking wood. All of his little bugs scatter and she swings the door wide open, accepting them into all of her little nooks and crannies. Safety for them all. A temporary home while Rasavyth gathers himself. << They are not all the same. That's true. >> Ghislaith gives to him, not condescendingly. Encouraging. (Ghislaith to Rasavyth)

K'zin plays follow the leader now, following Sabs back to the table. He groans when they arrive and she's pointing out the large book. "Yeeeaaaah. I don't want it." Not wanting it and not needing it are two different things. "You want to help me out with a project?" His brows raise in question. "Quinlys said I could start putting together a big game for learning history and sweep patterns and stuff. N'ky's going to help out. I'm hoping the others too. Vienne's going to help with the trivia questions." He bites his lower lip, "Should be a good way to learn this stuff. Not dry anyway. I could use someone with-- aesthetic taste? Is that what they call it when you're good at making things pretty?" Balance: kissing between bookshelves, volunteering for extra credit projects. (Not that the extra credit is anything more than brownie points.)

Dragon> To Ghislaith, Rasavyth is ''uncomfortable''. For so clever a dragon, he is not oft in a position where he simply doesn't know and doesn't have the resources to find all the answers. There's a certain amount that can be extrapolated, but he's missing some key personal interactions that would help cement his understanding. << Why don't you tell me what I ''should'' know about women? >>

"I heard that you didn't do well on your history section. Take the book, K'zin." Sabella more or less insists, picking it up and handing it over to him. Anything that's left to tidy on the table is put back into order. Though in truth, she picked up almost everything already. "Sure, I'll help you with your project." She responds brightly and then laughs. "I guess that aesthetic taste is what you could call it. I won't be able to help you with any of the actual knowledge parts. Because I didn't do well on that part of the exams at all either." She sighs and begins to move on to the exit, expecting that he's coming along as well.

Dragon> There's amusement in the sound of metal against metal, chimes in the wind. << They're complicated. But it might help to focus on them as individuals, as you said: they are not all the same. >> Ghislaith flashes to the mental image of both their lifemates together. << What 'blows it' for him with other women, might be very different for mine. >> (Ghislaith to Rasavyth)

Evidently, the topic has become something he doesn't want to participate in further and all at once windows close with the clatter of glass panes falling closed, and ''his'' door swings shut. He takes it one step further even as his touch retreats. The ooze that covers all he's shared folds in on itself, folding in, and in, and in again until he's naught but a speck, and then even that too has vanished. He ''doesn't like'' not knowing things.

Being overtly touchy is probably not appropriate at this point in time, but it doesn't stop Sabella from walking closely next to him as they approach the exit. "I understand how you feel. I start to get distracted and then I'm thinking about anything else other than the book in front of me. It helps to take a notes and shorten it up, get it more concise." She glances at him, catching his smile. It must be infectious because hers returns too and she looks away again, forward and ahead. "You might want to stay awake long enough to get something to eat. Dragon> Well that's discontenting. Ghislaith very distinctly does ''not'' enjoy the way the little bugs imitate her so precisely. The wooden boards shake and rattle, such is her disturbance. Soon there's the sound of straw to the floor and the gentle, yet determined noises of one specter sweeping away the insects. Even if they're no longer there, she wants to make sure they're completely gone. The door is bolted. Double bolted. Those things won't be welcome back in here again. (Ghislaith to Rasavyth)

K'zin's grin falters only for a brief moment, looking a touch distracted. "I can only hope," is his reply. He nudges her elbow gently, "I've gotta go see Ras. I'll catch up with you at dinner?" His brows lift and his look is still hopeful.

She bumps into him rather on purpose, flashing him an impish half smile for that comment. "Go on. You'll see me at dinner, I'll save you a seat." She assures him, tucking her hands into the pockets of her jacket as she sees him off. At the door they can part ways, her feet taking her more directly towards the caverns and his to wherever Rasavyth may be.
