Records Room, High Reaches Weyr(#367RJs)
Books. Scrolls. Bound hides. Maps. If it's a record pertaining to the Weyr, it's likely to be in this roughly oval room with its floor-to-ceiling cherrywood shelves, its multitude of slots for scrolls, and its wide drawers for materials that shouldn't be rolled up or folded. A scribe is usually on duty at the tall desk up front with its good view of the room, and is able to help visitors find what they're looking for via the big bound index on its rotating stand. Past the desk, several tables stand in neat rows for note-taking, each stocked with glowbaskets, scrap hide, paper and pencils. Additional lighting is provided by a many-armed wrought-iron light fixture, its glows gleaming through luxurious glass containers in fluted shapes instead of baskets.


To one side of the room, a gap between two sets of shelves outlines where another set once stood, now replaced by a tapestry-covered aperture. Peeking behind the tapestry reveals another cavern, this one likewise full of shelves, but occupied by only a few boxes of older records and a somewhat musty air of disuse. As well, two narrow but solid doors are locked when the room is unattended and a discreet staircase provides direct access from the Weyrleaders' weyrs.

It's late in the afternoon, which means most people seem to be knocking off for the day in favor of getting dinner or just being done for the day, but they say there's no rest for the wicked, so Aishani's predictably still at work. The Weyrwomen doesn't seem to be too bothered by it; likely a regular occurrence. She has a seat at a table near the entrance that she has to herself, much the same as the people working around her.

Z'ian doesn't usually work in here and he's not now, but he is returning a book that he borrowed. The bronzerider leans into the tall desk at the front of the room, handing the bound volume over and participating in a quiet conversation with the scribe on duty for several minutes. It seems to be a friendly, familiar exchange and he leaves it looking at least lightly amused. Aishani by the entrance is noticed and his teeth cut against his lower lip, hesitation before he detours in her direction. He doesn't intrude on her table or her work by sitting down, but he slows and his hand catches the back of a nearby chair. "Afternoon."

While Aishani doesn't seem bothered by the work, she likewise doesn't seem all that bothered by the interruption. She seems to expect it to a certain extent, perhaps having noticed the conversation, Z'ian's approach before. Glancing up from her work with an amused expression, a faint quirk of lips, "Afternoon." Tilting her head to one side, she regards the bronzerider for a few moments before, "How is your wing, Z'ian?" It's a simple enough question, without might weight to it. But.

"Oh, they're great." Z'ian begins with an indulgent roll of his shoulders. "I haven't been nominated the Weyrleader yet today, but there's still a few hours left for them to ruin my riding career here at High Reaches. And there's always tomorrow if they really want." The bronzerider speaks it with a dry, ironic sort of humor, stepping on the elephant in the room right away. "How is Taikrin?" There's not a lot of weight to that. But.

"Let's be honest. Who are they to ''ruin'' it? And who is there to ruin it with?" Aishani sets down her pen as if she's considering that as much as giving Z'ian time to do so, then lifts her own slight shoulders, drops them. "They have the power they're given." With a faint smirk for the question, she has a question for the bronzerider instead. "How would you be, in her position?" Which is not to say that she knows one way or the other.

"Were we being dishonest with each other before this moment?" Z'ian questions, somewhat rhetorically. "Maybe ruin was too dramatic a phrase. But I wasn't being entirely serious either, so." His smile is rueful as he continues to lean into that chair. "I'd like to think I'd be less inclined towards explosive behavior and demands for long, exhaustive punishments. But honestly, I'm not certain. Because I'm not in her position, only my own." His eyes lift from the goldrider and sweep the records room, passing over the other occupants. Out of order and a bit late, he comments, "Power isn't always given. Sometimes a person takes it."

With a little eye roll, "Maybe I just meant it was a bit overly dramatic." Overly dramatic from Aishani might be a bit much, but at least she doesn't seem too serious about that either. Resting her elbow on the table, chin in hand, she looks up at Z'ian with a little sigh. "Something has to be done. Otherwise, the behavior will go on unchecked. Will spread. I can't say that I'd do the same, but I can't say what I would have done. I can't say I wouldn't have slapped her." Lia, one supposes. She says it calmly enough, though. And she ''must'' allow, "Sometimes, yes. Sometimes you can't give it away to save your life."

"Humor. Sometimes it gets overly dramatic." Z'ian lifts one shoulder, smiling lopsidedly for it. What can you do? "I don't think anyone argues against that. But if the behavior is punished in a way that's not reasonable? Doesn't fit the crime? It isn't checking anything. It's fuel to the fire." The usual tension begins to creep into his shoulders, about to bring up something he'd rather not. "I'm afraid there's going to be a fire very soon. Iceberg is very restless, Taikrin is considered paranoid and unstable by more than just a handful of my riders. If you're the same Weyrwoman now that you were a short time ago? The one who listened to her people and took heed? Then please don't take what I'm saying as another disgruntled, hateful rider that wants to fight you."

Aishani certainly looks as if she's listening; she's attentive enough, her sharp, dark gaze barely ever straying from Z'ian - mostly to keep track of any comings or goings. "That's a discussion to have, certainly. A discussion. Is it an order you should question from your Weyrleader? Not necessarily." She doesn't seem upset or angry, but her lips do purse a touch, and she considers the man for a long moment. With what seems to be sincerity, "I don't think that you have any purposes beyond stability. Nor any particular grudges or issues. But at the same time... is Taikrin considered paranoid and unstable because she went off, with decent reason? Or because she's a female brownrider, and they're looking for a reason? K'del is practically ''insane'', and people still think he could be Weyrleader. Forgive me for wondering if they'd cause these issues, think these things otherwise."

"You can't have it with your Weyrleader when she's already suspicious of you to begin with." When Z'ian looks away from her, it's only to gauge if there's anyone close to them that may be paying more attention than they should be. But the records is quiet now. "I haven't done exactly what she demanded of me." But hasn't ''not'' done something either. "It's a tight rope walk between following orders and keeping my wing intact and loyal." The bronzerider shakes his head, not in annoyance or frustration really. "I won't claim that it's black and white. That she's evil and everyone against her are good, pure people. But they thought she was unstable ''before''. They remembered she was a convict, with a temper. They didn't forget. Being a woman and a brownrider weren't the only problems." He takes a breath, "K'del and Taikrin aren't the only choices to lead with you. There are other paths."

Wrinkling her nose a little, "Telgar... didn't help things. If she trusts Jo, she should trust the intentions." Which isn't to say that Aishani knows what Taikrin thinks one way or the other, but given her relationship - friendship - whatever she has with the bluerider, it's no surprise. There's another sigh for Z'ian's words, but her expression is not without sympathy. "I can see it being an issue. Your wing, its state to begin with... leaving that to your discretion... I can see how it might make things difficult." It's not something she can solve... not even with what he says next. Looking around despite the quiet, she lowers her tone even so, a touch incredulous. "It's not that I don't appreciate the thought, or the irony to ''say the least'', but how does that ''look''? As if everything else isn't bad enough..." They'll just switch Weyrleaders every six months. No biggie.

"She was pissed as fuck that I didn't get her. Nevermind that I barely knew Taikrin and H'kon had been my wingmate for a turn. Despite them being equals at the time. She was only concerned with ''her'' level of involvement. The ''results'' hardly mattered. She was planning on removing me ''then.''" As if Z'ian remembers himself, he shakes his head again. This time it's in annoyance, but clearly at himself and maybe the situation too. But not Aishani herself. "I'm sorry, I'm letting my feelings get the better of me." Pitching his own voice low as well, "At what point do we stop caring about how it ''looks'' to other people? And start caring about the disorder that's beginning to really develop? She's not working out. Do you support her until she blows? Until a wing completely turns? When D'nis decides maybe ''he'' could be Weyrleader? It's bad enough now, I know. But can it get worse? Is she able to curb it?" He's not speaking with anger or rage. It's more like strongly worded concern. "Just think about it, Aishani. I don't expect you to have every answer."

Hesitating for a moment, Aishani straightens and just shakes her head a little. "I can't say I was entirely thrilled to be left out either, particularly given... H'kon's total disinterest in doing anything useful. But regardless, the point was to stop something ''worse'' from happening. I pointed that out." She leans back in her chair, waving off the apology without much concern. "It happens," she says, distracted, in thought. "And I stopped caring to a certain extent about how things looked in order to gain some sort of stability. But..." Something between rueful and apologetic in her look for Z'ian just there, "Things are less so now. I..." She stops and seems to reconsider, then just shakes her head. "I appreciate that you're telling me at least. And that there's an option." She's silent for a moment, thumb drifting up so she can chew on the nail - until she notices she's doing it. "I'll think about it."

"H'kon is..." Look, he doesn't have any words for what the brownrider is. No explanation handy for that. His shoulders come up and fall helplessly. "At the time he seemed like the appropriate choice to me. I'm sorry if you felt left out of the decision." Z'ian tips his head forward at the end of that short apology. He releases the grip that he has on the back of the chair, straightening up. "I appreciate that you're listening. I understand what an impossible situation this is. For everyone." Exhaling slowly, he steps away from her table. "I'll let you get back to your duties. I should get moving again. Things." Duties of his own to complete possibly.

The decidedly unladylike sound Aishani has for H'kon, a derisive sniff, says words aren't really necessary. "One would assume reasonably, that someone decently dedicated to the Weyr might decide to lead it even if they'd choose not to, should circumstances dictate. But apparently some men are unable to rise to the occasion." And if that's a crack at the situation that apparently was Iesaryth's flight... well, okay. It totally is, by her smirk. She's not so mature that she can't enjoy it. "Don't apologize. You did what you thought was best, and it stopped Telgar from getting any more... purchase here. And I won't say that I made it better, Z'ian. But I won't apologize for that either." She seems sure about that - and there is an ease about her that wasn't there before - nothing's locked up tight. With a grin, "Things. That aren't Boreal, I'll hope. I'll talk to you soon." It's not just a farewell, it's a promise.

"I can't speak for what H'kon chose to do. A man has to make his own decisions, even if we don't agree with the reasons behind them." Z'ian sighs at that and directs a look her way for that not so subtle jab at the brownrider. It's borderline disapproving for the smirk, but he doesn't make an issue out of it. Some things aren't worth a debate, really. There's no forthcoming words for her lack of apology, but there's an assessment given over the ease of her form. His mouth curves at the last however, "I hope not too. And yes. Talk to you again soon." He tips his head and completes the step away, hands slipping into his pockets as he heads out the door of the records.
