Raum and Devaki have Thedrin, Lady Edeline of Tillek's heir, kidnapped. HIgh Reaches Weyr is tasked to perform much of the searching, but despite their best efforts, Thedrin is not located. Relations between the weyr and hold cool as a result; they cool rapidly further when the body of a child the right size and racial type is found in a shipwreck seven months later, too waterlogged to be clearly identified. Also found with the body, deep in the hull of the ship, are a collection of Cromese goods: suspicion begins to rise that Crom had something to do with the kidnapping, and this sours relations between Tillek and Crom, too.

Caught in the middle is High Reaches Hold, which has always shared positive relations with their fellow maritime Hold, but whose daughter, Issedi, is currently engaged to Lord Aughan of Crom. Their decision of who to side with could topple the entire area into instability-- and it's not really easy to know which way is, at present, less likely.

As the situation heats up, the weyr becomes the closest thing to a neutral zone (eighty turn old Ustelan of Nabol being increasingly erratic and confused, and his own line of succession unclear - and rather too focused inwards to pay attention to the broader state of play)... and that could become a problem.
