Now it was winter.

Madilla sat on the privy, staring down at the piece of rag in her hand, and tried not to cry. She'd been so hopeful, this time. There had been... sometimes, she had almost ''convinced'' herself that she could feel the fluttering of another heartbeat, though she knew, logically, it was far too soon. Sometimes she'd been ''so sure''.

And now she knew. Another month, gone. Another baby, potential-baby, bled away like trash.

She'd known, from the beginning, that it might not happen. Seven turns, now, they'd been together. More than seven turns. She'd never once even been ''late''.

But staring down at that bloody rag, she felt the loss, deep and real and harsh.

Probably, she was fooling herself. Probably, she was building herself up each month for no reason at all.

She had three perfectly healthy, wonderful children. Clearly, she was supposed to content herself with them. Clearly... clearly this just wasn't to be.

Six months of trying was too many.

She bit her lip. She closed her eyes. She ''forced'' herself to move on.
