| log =So once was probably pushing it. But Lycinea apparently hasn't learned her lesson. Of course, this time, she's not frumpy in sweaters. She started by standing in the lee of the rock face in the gather dress he bought for her, the slippers, and his oversized jacket, waiting for his return. But he took so long and who wants to get a cold butt sitting on stone, that eventually she invited herself inside, stoked up the fire, and stretched out on his couch. By the time he ''actually'' arrives, she's asleep, the stretch having become a curl, nestling her into one of the sides of the couch, her arms folded across her chest, cheek resting on her shoulder, and yes, just a little drool slipping out one corner of her mouth. The picture of innocence.

Finding Lycinea in his weyr is certainly a surprise. But he doesn't wake her right away. Why do that when he can look at her without her getting all weird about it? But it's not like he does anything creepier than that. Once a few moments have passed, he flicks her on the forehead and asks before she's had a chance to get her bearings, "What are you doing?"

Sass must be so much a part of Lycinea's character that it functions even before she's awake. "Ow!" is quickly followed by, "Sleeping, twerp. What are you doing?" And it's only after that that she's yawning wide and blinking at him. The blink becomes a squint, "Shells, what time is it? You got back late; it's like you have a life or something." She didn't really stop to breathe through any of that so she does so now before asking, "There's a gather, wanna go?"

H'vier watches her through waking, rising back to his full height as he starts to unbutton his shirt, even with his flight jacket still on over everything. Whether she recognizes that this is just his 'coming home' ritual and not some silent request to get it on is apparently on her. "Are you asking if I want to go? Or if I'll take you regardless of whether or not I actually want to go?"

"Neither," Lya answers, stretching as though she belongs on the couch, or perhaps because she's so used to not belonging that this seems nothing out of the ordinary to her. She ''does'' side-eye him as he starts unbuttoning. "I'm asking if you want to go to a gather with me." Which is somehow different than either of the things he said. "I did my hair," she points out, because it's kinda a ''big deal'', even though the braids are simple enough.

There's a good chance that H'vier doesn't understand the difference between what he said and what she says, but he nods. He glances at her hair, then down further to her dress. Then he sighs and turns away, shrugging out of both his flight jacket and his shirt as he heads to his wardrobe. "You look nice, Lya. But isn't there someone else you'd rather go with? I can take you both, if you want. And bring you back when you're ready." H'vier is offering to play ferry for a teenage girl. That's kind of a big deal, too.

Lycinea doesn't watch him go, because he's taking off clothes. It probably would be smarter to watch him all the more carefully, lest he start getting stupid ideas, but instead she looks to the fire, her cheeks touched with a blush. She pushes up onto her feet and moves to the hearth. "I only have a couple friends. One of them, I haven't seen in three turns, the other one is busy with weyrlings. And you don't want to be my friend, but we ''did'' have fun at that other gather, and I wouldn't even expect you to buy me things this time. I just--" She looks down at her hands and rather than fidget awkwardly-- okay, ''in addition'' to fidgeting awkwardly, she reaches for the poker to move the coals around. "I want to learn to dance. You were good at it, I thought," not that she's an expert, "so I thought you could teach me. We don't have to be friends for you to teach me." She says that rather defensively.

She's not looking at him, he's not really looking at her. Perfect. H'vier is working on changing, though, and if she ''were'' to look at him, she might see that they're nice clothes that he's putting on. "We don't need to go to a gather for me to teach you how to dance, either," he points out. "But I do still owe you a coat, I suppose."

Lya's blue-green eyes jerk to H'vier now, surprised, "But where else are we going to get music?" Because how does one learn to dance ''without music''? Her eyes are quickly averted, but she didn't miss that he's putting on gather-appropriate clothing. So now her movements are designed to coax the fire to embers only, as she found it, for the time away from the Weyr. "You do owe me a coat. Do you know how many people have asked me if I finally got a boyfriend since I started wearing this thing?" It's probably not a lot, because they'd have to notice her in order to ask. "Anyway, if you don't want to go with me, you can just say so." But her tone would seem to indicate that she'd be disappointed.

"You don't need music to dance," says H'vier in that way adults have of enlightening silly children in the most patronizing ways possible. "And if I didn't want to go, I ''would'' have said so." It's not like he's worried about hurting her feelings or anything. "Do you like when people ask if you have a boyfriend?" he wonders out loud while he tucks in his shirt and fastens his belt.

"But it's better with music." Isn't it? She's not entirely sure, and her tone says so. ''Probably'', she's never tried it without. "And don't talk to me like that. I'm sixteen." Need she remind him… ''again''? Only this time, it's used to make him see her as an adult and not a child as opposed to all the other times she's employed it. How fickle is the teenage girl. Lycinea puts the poker back where it belongs. "No. It's very awkward. It would be one thing if I wanted to lie about having a boyfriend, but it's not a lie to say I don't, and then I start having to give real answers to things, and it's just a mess." She throws her hands up and lets them fall to indicate that it's a bit like confetti, perhaps. She turns to peek. Is he done changing yet?

Fortunately for Lycinea, it doesn't take much to clean H'vier up. Or maybe it's just that he doesn't do much and then calls it good and it's only fortunate that he still looks decent. "Why don't you want to lie about that?" He's apparently ''aware'' that she lies about things. Perhaps liars have a sixth sense for spotting other liars. And H'vier is a big, fat liar.

"Why ''would'' I want to lie about that?" Lycinea counters with raised eyebrows high enough to pucker the skin above them. It's like she's asking him to give her one good reason.

"Why do women do anything?" returns H'vier as he finds the jacket that's nicer than his typical flight jacket. It's for special occasions like gathers, of course. "I've had women want me to pretend to be with them to keep other men away. Not that I'm suggesting that." That would be weird. "But the idea can keep some men away." And apparently H'vier thinks Lycinea would like that.

"I don't have any men to keep away," and Lycinea's tone suggests she prefers it that way. "Except you. And you wouldn't believe me anyway if I said I had a boyfriend," neverminding that she's just told him she doesn't. "Why would you waste time thinking about why women do things? The 'why' isn't important is it? Just what is done. Right?" She's moved over to the walkway now, bouncing onto the balls of her feet and back to flat-foot as she waits, a small amount of the eagerness she hides relatively well escaping that way.

H'vier only rolls his eyes at the girl and, since he seems to have no intention of actually giving her an answer to any of that rhetoric, he starts to make his way out toward the ledge where Reisoth is waiting. He won't even insist on his fancier straps. "Try not to vomit on my dragon," he tells Lycinea.

"I'll save it for your boots," the girl answers him cheerfully; she's probably kidding. Hopefully.
