It wasn’t long after takeoff. Ghislaith had sailed about twenty feet in the air, when Sabella felt a difference in the way the straps strained against her. Were they even supposed to strain that way? There wasn’t a lot of time to think, because just as she heard the breaking of the leather, she was tumbling over the side of her green.

Sheer survival instinct gave her the ability to slap a hand against the remains of her straps that still clung on. She tangled her fingers up in them desperately. But she could feel her lifemate teetering in the air, unable to compensate for the sudden displacement of weight. Not old enough and savvy enough to figure out how to accommodate them this way.

They were losing height quickly and Sabella knew. She knew that in a matter of moments they would be a tangle of human and dragon that would fall to the floor of the bowl like a rock, together. Ghislaith would fall ''with'' her. She couldn't.

<< No. No. No. Nononono. NO! >> The lights went on her green’s mind. Then off. They flashed and blinded her; they tried to drive away the thought. To think up alternatives, but in her panic couldn’t come up with a single coherent one. Just, << NO! >>

She let go.

And the fall to the bowl wasn’t so scary. The sensation of nothing around her but the wind whipping past her body was actually okay. It was the rapidly approaching ground that terrified her. That was the thing that finally tore the scream from her throat.

It was like getting walloped really hard between the shoulder blades by a much larger person. The impact. All of the air she hadn’t yelled out on the way down was forced from her lungs with a whoosh. She’d unthinkingly put her forearm out to try and catch herself against the floor, but it was the wrong thing to do. And she knew it the moment the sickening snap reached her ears and the flare of pain raced up her limb.

And somewhere in the disorienting confusion she could just vaguely discern the shape of Ghislaith over her, green wings spread out protectively. Her mind was a mess of rage, words completely unrecognizable. It was just raw emotion that she poured out over everything. Soon though, something quelled her, pulled her away. She thought that she heard E’sren somewhere, her name being called. But her ears were still ringing.

And she could hear the weyrlingmasters.

''Where are we?''

''What’s your name?''

It all happened so quickly. Just a few seconds.
