| log = It wasn't - exactly - that Seani had stopped caring about her fellow islanders. It wasn't as though she was ashamed of them, or unhappy to have once lived with them. But she was one of the first to formally request a job, and one of the first who moved out of the barracks and into an impersonal but private dormitory with a group of weyr girls.

The Headwoman had been reluctant, and maybe once Seani would have let that sway her; but not now. "I want to be part of this weyr," she explained to Giorda. "I want to fit in and make a life for myself. I don't want to be just 'one of the exiles' forever."

And so, while most of the young people remained in the candidate barracks, Seani moved on.

She didn't stop caring about the others; she didn't ignore them. But it was easier to stand on her own two feet, somehow, to make friends of her own and to leave behind the bittersweet memories. The weyr was a strange place full of strange things, but most of all, it was an opportunity: she had no intention of letting it go to waste.

She loved her new job. She spent some time with the exile children, of course, but she refused to be 'the exile nanny': she cared for them all. It hurt her, that so many of these children didn't seem to have proper families to care for them; but she saw how much their nannies cared, and she strove to be like them. She told fanciful tales of her own childhood, but listened intently to the ones her charges shared. In her free time, she worked on her reading, her writing.

And she smiled. She flirted. She...

She felt fifteen again. She felt like she had when she was a young girl, before Tomaeran, before the baby; it was like she was a new person, living a new life.

At night, she dreamed about getting married again. Her dreams were no linger filled with a little hut on the cliffs, but with a little set of rooms off the caverns. Her babies would be at work with her during the day, and at night, they'd eat together, and be part of the community. Her children would grow up as part of the weyr, and her stories would be like fanciful little dreams. One day, they'd tell their friends, "My mama grew up on an island without shoes or books or meat or milk or dragons or anything!" and they'd listen in awe.

Seani was a success story. Was going to be a success story.

Nothing was going to stop her from that.
