| log = Everyone always commented on what a sweet child Erika was - none of the moods of her mother (unsurprising, since she was not, after all, biologically Kash's), and dazzling vivaciousness that ''must'', surely, come from the father, whoever he was.

(Kash watched her daughter and saw so much of herself, and so much of Kas, and it made her heart ache. Why couldn't Erika be more like Eire? Everyone expected that.)

She would be four, soon, this bright-eyed, dark-haired daughter of theirs. Sometimes, Kash wondered if her weyrmate was bothered by the deception of it all; sometimes, she wondered how much it would hurt her brother, if it all came out.

Most of the time, she told herself she didn't care.

Erika was ''theirs''. Perhaps he'd provided the seed, but in the end, what did that matter? This was a Weyr, after all. People often had children without fathers. Sometimes, people didn't even know, couldn't answer the question even if they wanted to. Kash knew. Eire knew. If it became relevant…

She hoped it never would. When K'del was in the area, sometimes Cadejoth sought Tansayth out (but never Kastaveth), and the green was friendly but unobliging. He didn't push the issue: he didn't push to see Eire, let alone to see Kash. It was better that way.

She made an effort to know nothing about her brother's life. It was bad enough that he knew where she was, that he could destroy her secret at any time - she didn't want to know, and to wish she was there for things.

Would he try and tell her if their parents died? If something terrible happened?

She didn't know whether she wanted that answer to be yes… or no.

She didn't think about the other child, either. The one who would turn nine this Turn. She didn't ask herself whether he knew who she was, and regretted not knowing her; she didn't wonder whether he was still in line to inherit the family Vinehold, or if Evelin had had the son she dreamed about at last.

She wasn't that person anymore. She wasn't Nakasha.

"You must have a brother somewhere, Kash, for Eire to have produced a child who looks so much like you. Unless you're really a boy in disguise?"

Kash felt brittle and cold.

Eire came to her rescue. "I just know how to pick a man, Beya. Why shouldn't our daughter look like both of us, eh? She's ''ours''."

''Ours''.

Kash liked that.

She liked that a lot.

Eire and Tansayth, Kash and Kastaveth, and little Erika made five.

They were all the family Kash needed.
