It wasn’t much ''quieter'' despite the difference in number, Jocelyn reflected sourly as she rolled over for the fifth time that night, frowning into the dark as she attempted to punch her lumpy pillow back into shape. As with every other evening, it stayed plush for the usual five seconds before beginning to deform. ‘’Again.’’

Another turn brought the candidate to lie on her back, light eyes staring unseeingly upward between the snores issuing from the next bunk. Four clutches, four attempts at standing. ‘’Five’’, she corrected herself. There was still Roszadyth’s hardening on the sands, still silent.

Not for the first time, she considered walking back into Jounine’s office the next morning and requesting to swap knots once more, duty be hanged. She was conscious of how little she fit in with this class (had they always been so ‘’young’’?) and masked her discomfort in the only way she knew how, the same way she buried her uncertainties when she first became Giorda’s assistant at seventeen.

She knew what people called her, of course. Whether they did it in her hearing or otherwise, it still augmented this funny ache that appeared somewhere in her chest at inopportune moments.

‘’Bitch’’.

Here, where there was no one to see, no one to ‘’judge’’, Jocelyn permitted herself a shaky breath, then another, head curling toward her own shoulder. As her pillow grew damp, she closed her eyes firmly and ‘’willed’’ that quavering feeling away.

Over four of her own candidacies and six turns as assistant headwoman, Jocelyn had seen enough classes pass through the barracks to learn that some candidates might never be prepared to face the realities that awaited them – the things they’d learn about themselves as they discerned what they were seeking, regardless if they eventually Impressed or chose to walk a different path.

She never thought she might be one of them.
