''This large cavern has been set aside as a workroom for the weyr's vintners, complete with all the equipment necessary to brew, ferment, distill and concoct. Long workbenches line one wall, with the rest of the space set aside for the larger equipment: large vats, grape presses, and so on. There's a storage above and below the benches, as well as a cellar built into the floor below, cool and quiet.

The sigh escaped her. Tayte hadn't meant to let the sound slip out as she worked through the supply ledger, tallying the usage against the orders. It was dull work, but the sigh was born from more than that, she knew.

She was bored. You'd think, she reasoned, that with shifts in Snowasis and sharing the responsibilities of WeyrVintner with her fellow journeyman, and raising a now five turn old daughter that she would have her hands full. But something was missing.

She knew the wild days of partying were behind her, and that there was more depth and color to life than there had been then, but she felt ''bored''. She tapped the eraser squished around the butt of her pencil on the ledger idly, chin finding her hand to rest upon.

The taps synchronized to the beats of her heart. Her heart. That was really the trouble. She was too willing to give it away, she'd decided. That's how she ended up hurt. She'd thought with K'del there was a future, but-- no. They shared a daughter, and a friendship, but with him busy as acting Weyrleader and with a new baby, even that wasn't what it had been. Then H'vier. Things had been so strange but then so strangely promising and then so very not all of a sudden. Things were still a mess there. He'd wanted her to say she loved him. Did she? She did. In the relative dark that the single open glow on her work table created, she could admit that to herself. Only... she loved K'del too. Still. But did she love either of them in the ''right'' way? She didn't know. She'd thought, too, that she might've loved Jo, and maybe she would have if things hadn't gone as they did. Maybe her mistake was in loving too much, or too many. Maybe if she could get her heart to choose only one... but even if she could, what kind of choice was that? A man who loved another, or a man who loved too many others, or a woman who-- well... Would Jo ever want that at all? Let alone, from her? She didn't know. Hadn't stuck it out long enough to find out.

Everything was hot and cold. Sometimes that was exciting, except like now when everything was cold or cool or virtually non-existent. Sometimes Tayte thought she would settle for lukewarm. Maybe U'by? But no. He was sweet in his own troubled way, but no. She didn't and wouldn't and probably couldn't feel for him. The heat made her feel alive. Maybe that's why she was bored. That's what she was missing.

She set the pencil down and lifted her head, reaching her fingers back to slip beneath her long braid and massage her neck. A shiver ran down her spine. It might be spring, but she still felt cold, and longed for heat.

She sighed.

Then froze.
