| log = Lily and Dee brought her a cup of tea in bed, and a little flower in a jug, no doubt stolen from the Greenhouse.

They climbed into bed with her. Dee, in her lap with his arms wrapped around her, his little blond head buried against her breast. Lily, curled up next to them both, long legs stretched out. She was going to be tall, one day.

"How old are you, Mama?" Dee wanted to know.

"Twenty-nine."

Another turn and she'd be thirty - and she remembered clearly, now, how long ago that had once seemed. In another month or two, it would be ten turns since she walked the tables. Ten turns since that summer away. Ten turns since Milandra's birth.

Ten turns since the promise she'd made to Delifa - that she'd wait six months before trying to get pregnant. It had been W'chek, then, of course.

Shells, so many memories.

It was hard to remember her nineteen-turn-old self, in some ways. She wished she could reach back through time and reassure that younger self, so naive and unsure, that everything would be fine. That she would get that child she yearned for, dreamed for, so much. That she would be an asset to her craft.

That everything would be okay.

"Mum. What's wrong? Are you sad about getting older?"

It was Lily who asked, this time - Lily, whose concerned, blue-eyed gaze sought hers out. "Mm? No - no, I'm not sad. I'm remembering. I love you both so much."

Lily's eyebrows raised; ''Lily'' didn't completely believe her. But she smiled, and wrapped her arms around both of them. "We love you, too, Mum."

They had a late start, that morning. No one minded: a turnday was a turnday.

Besides, she had to make the most of these simple days. Soon, too soon, she really would ''have'' to try and go to High Reaches Hold again. And what would happen then?

She had no answer for that.

But excuses could only take her so far.
