At least a month had passed since she first received news that Fionn and Shaus were among ‘’those thieves’’ apprehended, seven--no, eight?--months prior. Several drafts had been drawn up, considered, and discarded, but at last she had produced five crisply folded brown paper envelopes ready for dispatch.

One letter was addressed to her eldest brother, Rorden. The short, pleading letter spoke politely of ‘’rumours’’, of ‘’information’’ and ‘’connections’’. It closed with a hopeful ‘’love from your little sister’’.

Mathias received the longest letter. Closest in age to Laine, and close, too, to Fionn and Shaus. Toward the end, Laine’s spiky handwriting grew crowded and determined, cutting deep into the hide. It signed off with a double underlined ‘’please’’ and an ‘’xoxo, L’’.

One letter, too, for Lorgan, the youngest. Fourteen turns, now; he must be so much taller now, since Laine saw him last. His letter was a cursory courtesy, full of ‘’love to’’s and ‘’asking after’’s and her ‘’best to ma and da’’. The envelope included a small, ornamental leather token stamped with the image of a dragon in flight.

And there were two more. One each for Fionn and Shaus. Near-identical, they were brief, terse in content, and Laine’s cursive was deliberate and neat. An optimistic ‘’looking forward to hearing from you’’ concluded the note. The twin letters were prefaced with a ‘’to whom it may concern’’ and, for good measure, ‘’c/o Lady Tevrane’’.

The bundle of letters, delivered to the on-duty courier, received nought but a passing glance from the leather-clad rider. Nevertheless, Laine lingered in the bowl until she saw the brownrider spiral up, up, and disappear ‘’between’’.
