"I asked if you wanted a drink, not whether you had any decorating tips," the bronzerider pointed out as he poured one for himself.

"No. Thank you. But I suppose that's why I'm here."

H'vier turned to look at her, eyes narrowed, drink in hand, not understanding how refusing his offer could possibly be relevant to her presence in his weyr.

He ignored Reisoth. He needed to seriously rethink that strategy at some point. For now he simply tried to shut him out.

And since the bronzerider wasn't getting it, Fayla said slowly, deliberately, a meaningful pause between each, "I'm pregnant, Havi. It's yours. I'm keeping it."

His wingleader's straightforwardness was something he usually appreciated. This was not one of those times. H'vier stared at her for a long few moments, processing. Finally, "Are you sure?" He didn't specify which part he was questioning.

It didn't matter which part he was questioning. Her answer was the same. "Yes."

"Fuck." He needed to sit down. He needed a ''drink''. So he sat down and swallowed what he'd poured for himself all at once. "''Fuck.''" He could not possibly emphasize that point enough.

It wasn't the reaction the brownrider had been hoping for, exactly, but it was more or less what she'd been expecting. "I'll need you to take over some of my duties, of course. Drills, sweep schedules--"

"''Why?''"

It was Fayla's turn to look confused. "You're my wingsecond?"

"Why are you ''keeping'' it?"

Oh. That was different. "Why not? I want a child. You're handsome enough. A bronzerider. Ambitious. Obviously, I'll hope it inherits ''my'' personality. But I could do worse." Her levity fell on deaf ears.

"She can't know. Tayte can't find out about this. She'll never let me see my daughter again if she knows about this."

"Don't be stupid. She'll understand. It's not as though I want ''you'', anyway. She can keep you."

H'vier shot Fayla a sharp look. She smiled. "I'll leave you to your… brooding. But cheer up, Havi. You're practically a wingleader now."

He wasn't sure if he should be angry. Or afraid. Or, possibly, just a little bit excited. He enjoyed being a father, truth be told. It wasn't until the woman left that Reisoth's presence could be felt more heavily in his mind. He'd held back to observe.
