| log = A'rist didn't like being stuck in the weyr while Lythronath was making the kill. All of him felt drawn and tight and trapped. He tried to ignore it, and make his fingers work.

They did. Precisely. But it still felt far away.

He could taste the blood with Lythronath. He focused on the heart that sent it pounding through veins beneath the warm flesh. Focused on its continued beating.

His fingers worked the knot, echoing the erratic time of the panicked thumping. His mouth was watering, and he was a little hard, by the time he got the silver thread free.

The beast's thrashing was already starting to give out, to give up, when Lythronath landed.

''Open.''

The bronze tore its throat with his claw, and blood spilled out. A'rist moved quickly to meet the growing pool and dipped his finger, while Lythronath rolled his muzzle in it. The heartbeat was slowing.

He left the rest of the kill to the dragon, and went far enough that he could safely lay out the knot, and the silver thread he'd taken from it. He pressed his fingers, already starting to feel tacky, to it, four evenly spaced prints.

The taste and smell and feel of the kill was all around him. He wouldn't realise he'd licked his own fingers until much later, after Lythronath had spread the blood and carefully marked off the boundaries of his ledge and couch, after A'rist had woven the bloodied thread back into the knot with the same precision, but an entirely different presence.

And this was their place.
