''R'van,'' Rafe read in his head, making sure to inflect it just so, in his mockery of Liandra's voice.

''We extend our congratulations as to your Impression and wish you a fulfilling life at High Reaches Weyr. Your research will be picked up by <insert name of random person who may or may not be a rival of Rafevan's> so your work will not go to waste. We thank you for your turns of service to the Hall.''

Vadevjiath hung on every word, his consideration intense enough to unnerve even Rafe, even after a week constantly under such scrutiny. << I see, >> Dev said afterward, and for a moment, Rafe felt like he'd missed a step underwater: the world turned oddly, and Vadevjiath's fierce protectiveness threatened to swallow him under. He pushed the dragon's head away, letting his fingers twine in his bedding to steady himself.

''She was a couple turns behind me, at the Hall. Similar areas of overlap, but she never had an original idea in her head. And they think ''she'' can follow my work?'' His disdain bled through, despite his efforts to the contrary: keeping their feelings of hunger and itchiness separated was one thing. Emotions were entirely different, and for one who so often felt content with his lot, Dev seemed awfully eager to pick up on the darker things that slipped through Rafe's mind. ''Or do you mean, why must I give it up? Because... I have you. And you're, I guess, to be my focus now.''

''Why? Because--that's what riders do. I don't know, I'm new to all this too, you know.''

The idea made Rafe laugh aloud, picturing Dev laying out explosives while Rafe strung the cord; but Dev didn't seem to find anything amusing about it. << You shouldn't give her your work. >>

Rafe didn't laugh then. Something about Dev's seriousness was almost off-putting, not comical on even a small dragon like him. ''I'll have to give her ''something'','' he told Vadevjiath practically, then considered. ''But... my more recent work, I haven't even shown to my Master yet. And the rest--well. I could make a copy.'' The dragon's pleasure was sharp then, scraping against Rafe's mind, and Rafe found himself smirking back, reaching over to pull Dev back closer and scritch at his headknobs.

''I don't even know what they'd say about this,'' Rafe warned Dev. ''Liandra's no fool, but....'' It was impossible to not be buoyed up with the bronze's faith, all the same. ''I should go collect everything. You should pretend you're asleep,'' he assured the dragon: the act would be truth soon enough, and it was far easier to get Dev to go along that way, anyway. Dutifully, Vadevjiath did just that, and as soon as R'van was assured the bronze was out, he slipped on his way too, back toward his old crafters' home.
