| log = Madilla wasn't sure why Varens seemed so different, this time. The last time they'd met, she'd still been an Apprentice - it was during that summer she spent at the Hall, the advanced training program. He had been a Journeyman already, but not so above the group of apprentices that he'd not spent time with them. Madilla had liked him, certainly, but she'd liked most of the group and had thought little more of it.

Two turns and then some had passed, though. She was a Journeyman in her own right, now, and the mother of a baby who could certainly no longer be termed a newborn. And if it was something in this that had changed things, she didn't know. What she did know was that she liked Varens - liked him more than, it seemed, she'd liked anyone else before.

And he seemed to like her. Invited her to join him in his study that first night, so that they could catch up. Invited her to take a walk through the wintry gardens, the orchards where she'd liked to study, once upon a time. But whether he liked her for more than her company, Madilla couldn't be sure. A little voice in the back of her mind wondered why anyone would, anyway, ever, but especially these days, as plumped up and padded as she was.

It had only been a handful of days. And it would only be a handful more: she had a daughter to get home to, a daughter she missed desperately. He had his work at the Hall - she doubted he'd ever accept a posting. Perhaps they'd write, she thought, staring at the ceiling above her bed, too thoughtful to sleep. Would he miss her enough to write?

Just friends, after all. Even if it felt as though there were butterflies in her stomach when she saw him. Even if his arm on hers made her feel all warm and prickly. Even if--

''Well, Madilla'', she told herself, trying to be firm. ''Perhaps you're not so different from everyone as you've always assumed. Perhaps you CAN, after all, imagine such things.

Oh, but what was the point? She felt silly, fretting like this. Like a teenager, sighing and dreaming. Not like a woman grown, a mother at that. ''Be sensible'', she chided herself. ''He lives and works here, and you live and work at the Weyr, and as you told G'brion, you don't want to live and work here, even if it were a possibility. No doubt you'll forget all about him, when you get home.''

But home seemed a very lonely prospect indeed.
