At first, Leiventh refused to go.

The dragon wouldn't -- couldn't -- explain why, and R'hin knew it was because he couldn't ''remember'', and yet somehow, something stirred the reticent bronze to reluctance.

Perhaps he could ask Bristia to have Saindyth take him--

They stood near the back, R'hin leaning against Leiventh, pretending to himself like he didn't need the comfort of contact, even if the bronze was unusually silent inwardly as he always was out.

R'hin'd never witnessed a bowl full of people, of dragons, so eerily silent as in Telgar's. He could hear the murmur of Prinavi, addressing the weyrfolk, but he didn't focus on the words, but the people. A pair of older greenriders, arms around each other, murmuring promises that they'd never let each other get ''that way''. Some of the older stalwarts, stone faced, but tight-of-jaw. A little girl, her hand in her father's, uncomprehendingly twirling a lock of hair around her finger.

Prinavi spoke, and then she climbed on Viyareth, the slumped form of the former Weyrwoman Torani leaning against the queen's neck the focus of all eyes. Except R'hin's -- he watched J'sran, then J'toran, seeing their grief made raw.

He didn't watch as Telgar's senior queen disappeared into the sky with Torani's motionless form.

And he didn't watch when she emerged, three heartbeats later, without it.

He'd been travelling with the Igenite traders on and off for weeks, now. It allowed him to indulge a future where, perhaps, he could retire, become a trader, work with (for?) Destina. Leiventh could loll about in the sun, or even carry cargo.

He held his breath.

Nothing.

Not even a whiff of the bronze's usual distain of such undragonlike uncouthness.

Not a hind of coldness, a stir of a breeze.

He looked at the angular bronze, and felt nothing. For the first time in a long time, he felt truly alone.

And it frightened him.
