| log =The last time he'd slept in a strange bed, in a strange place, he'd been with Ellisa, and they'd held each other all night, and she'd promised him that everything would work out, and he'd believed her.

He wasn't sure if it helped or hurt to think of her, now, lying in this narrow cot. He felt old and tired next to the other Candidates; he wondered if he wasn't '''too''' old, and '''too''' tired, and wasn't that a joke? Not the kind of joke you laugh about, though.

He missed Jaymin, and his son's tear-stained, confused little face haunted his thoughts. He'd promised he would come back, and his mother had promised she'd look after him, but neither of them had understood. Jay was too little; Ma simply didn't believe that duty extended that far. "You have to think about your son, Dal. Your '''child'''. Isn't your duty to him, first? He's already lost his mother."

Jay didn't remember his mother, though, and Dal... it was his duty to come. He knew that. But he also felt... free, somehow. For the first time in a turn.

How hard would it be to go back to the Hold again, after this? A few hours in, and Dal was quite sure he wasn't made to be a Dragonrider (he could have told Reesa that, before he'd even arrived, but that wasn't fair to Khiabeth); sure that he would be going home at the end of this. But home...

Perhaps there'd be '''something''' a man could do, here. No orchards, granted, but there hadn't been orchards at Fort Sea, either, and he'd still made his way. He could learn. Perhaps, eventually, Jay really could come and join him. He wasn't sure about this whole nanny business, but maybe they could work something out.

He'd have to see. First, though, he'd have to work out how to sleep in this strange, strange place.

''Good night, Jay'', he thought, imagining his thoughts travelling all the way down to that cothold in the valley. ''Sleep well. Be a good boy for Ma-ma. Shall I sing to you? The song Mommy wrote for you when you were born? She loved you. I love you too. Now - close your eyes. Go to sleep. I'll see you soon, I promise.''

He sang in his head, forming each word in his thoughts.
