| log = It's just short of three months since the flight when Rielsath heads to the hatching sands and lays their clutch. Svissath is an attentive sire; he digs holes for her, builds the sand protectively up around them, keeps her entertained during the arduous hours.

Not ''so'' many hours. It's a small clutch. Not unexpected, of course, not with a flight so short, and a sire so… brown.

Still, I'kris can admit to himself that he would have liked it to have been larger, anyway.

When she's finished, Rielsath has seven eggs to tend to. They're dwarfed and insignificant compared to the size of the caverns. The idea that there could be clutches of thirty or forty seems difficult to imagine.

Still, at least Lujayn seems pleased. "It's quality, not quantity," she reminds him.

Quality. Yes.

He hopes for bronzes.

He hopes for ''browns''. Good, solid browns that prove to everyone how important browns are.

He hopes…

He's not even sure.

His father doesn't visit, though his mother and sister do. "We're so proud," says Indalys, kissing his cheek.

"He did well," says Mirinda. "How exciting!"

They don't pass on any messages from M'kris, and Kris doesn't ask if there are any. It's better to leave it.

Svissath doesn't like to leave the eggs, not for long, but I'kris insists. "I can't just stay here all the time. Besides, we still have sweeps to do. Drills. We can't let them see us as freeloaders."

He doesn't tell Svissath why he so often encourages the brown to land by rivers, or marshes, when they take meal breaks during sweeps. He keeps his thoughts to himself; he's gotten good at that.

Why shouldn't he want to go for walks and stretch his legs? ''He'' doesn't get to fly all day.

(He doesn't know how much Svissath picks up. The brown's thoughts are so full of gold. It helps.)
