| log =Day by day, his leg was getting better. The healers had him doing all kinds of exercises, and as much as they hurt, he could see the results: his muscles were getting stronger, and now, he didn't even need the crutch to hobble around on, though his gait wasn't yet smooth.

Suraieth was taking longer, despite her youth. That tear in her wingsail had been large, and no one was going to take any chances with it. If it took months and months before they felt confident about her flight readiness, well, it was just going to have to take months and months. It had been okay, earlier. Sure, it was a little hard watching the other weyrling dragons glide for the first time, and then fly. But he'd always remind himself - and Su, though ''she'' reacted to this with logic and reason and not drama and emotion - that they'd been /right/ next to R'zi and Tajireth when everything came down; they're lucky to be alive.

Now, though, their classmates are moving out - up into weyrs of their own. Dal- /N'dalis/ (why is he still not used to it?) has never been in one, except the junior weyr they're living in now, and it's hard to get a sense of that. Maybe it's easier, now, with so few left - almost like you can imagine just living with a family. It's not like they're strangers, now.

All of that makes it hard to imagine what they're missing, except that Dal has found within himself a desire for privacy of place. Somewhere that is his and Suraieth's, and no one else's (except, maybe, one day, Jay's). ''<< Patience, >>'' Suraieth advises him, when he's dreaming about that late one night when he should be asleeping-and-dreaming-for-real. ''<< We will get ours, as surely as they have gotten theirs. I /will/ fly, in time. >>

What if you don't? What if they decide--

''<< Hush. They won't. It heals and heals, day by day. Like your leg. It would be illogical to ban us from flight forever. I am not concerned. >>

It's been five months, now, and Dal still can't believe his luck with Su. He knows that /green/ is not what anyone really expected for him, perhaps even himself if he'd expected anything, but this is /Su/. How could she be anything but perfect for him?

''<< We were meant to be, >>'' she reminds him, a gentle wave running up against his shoreline, covering his feet. ''<< We were, we are, we will always be. It is the way of it. Part of the pattern. >>

And what can a man say to that, except acknowledge it? In a way, it makes everything fit - all the pieces of his life. If Ellisa hadn't died, if he hadn't brought Jay back to his family, if… all those decisions, one by one, had led to this.

He still missed Ellisa. He suspected, quietly, that he always would. But she would want this for him - she would want him to be happy.

And she would want Jay to be with him, and happy, too.
