| log = In some ways it was easy: just like slipping on a pair of old, comfortable shoes. Sure, they leaked out of the bottom, sometimes, but you sort of knew to expect that, and it didn't stop them from feeling familiar.

In other ways, it was difficult. He'd gotten used to things, in the end. He'd enjoyed his position in Taiga, enjoyed working with F'manis on that Lounge, enjoyed his vines and his island. Enjoyed having time to spend with his children, and his friends. (Enjoyed being in a relationship without those pressures holding him down).

Everything would be different, now. He'd known there was - for example - potential for things to get sticky with Fort, over Ali, but it had been fine while he was 'just' a Wingsecond. Now… it was a concern.

He tried not to think too hard about a lot of things.

He didn't move into the Weyrleader's Weyr: he was ''acting'', even if it could be turns before anything changed (more likely, ''a'' turn, perhaps, and would he be staying on after that? Who could tell).

He did start spending time in the council chambers again, that cavern that had been his home for so long.

He reassured F'manis that he had no intention of taking Taiga.

He told Oisa to act as Wingleader for Boreal, at least for the moment. It was hard to tell if she had ambitions to take the Wing on permanently, and he didn't ask. In any case, it didn't seem likely that Z'ian would be up to leading again anytime soon.

(He checked in, from afar. No change. Not critical, not on death's door, but not… well. 'Serious', they said.)

He made visits. To Crom, mostly: to Lord Aughan, who seemed genuinely horrified that whatever had happened to Z'ian had happened in ''his'' territory… albeit out by the borders, towards the lands that were claimed by Telgar. He promised an investigation: if it had been intentional, he'd find out. No one seemed to know anything, except that Z'ian had been lucky.

Had K'del been lucky?

In a way, he worried. In a way, it had been good for High Reaches to have new leadership, untainted by the past. They'd done things differently than K'del would have, but that didn't make them (necessarily) wrong. He'd ease in to things.

A caretaker-- that's what he would have to be. Until a flight.

Another flight.

Once upon a time, gold flights had seemed largely matter-of-course. Not that he'd expected, necessarily, to win Iovniath's second and third, but… it had been a known quantity, somehow, and now it wasn't. Now it was all political.

He tried not to think about Isyath's next flight.

There were a lot of things he didn't think about.

F'manis clapped him on the shoulder and wished him luck, though they drank long in to the evening all the same. B'sil shook his head, told him he'd been too young to retire anyway. Sisha just smiled that enigmatic smile of hers.

In a way, it was like coming home.

In a way, it was harder than the first time - harder than it had been when he was seventeen and scared shitless.

He had to be better, this time. Had to ''do'' better.
