He woke before the pre-dawn light, confused. He could feel the warmth of a body pressed against his back, a hand over his chest, and struggled to remember where he'd been. High Reaches. The Hold. Except then... ''Leiventh.''

Sleepy stirring marked the bronze's passage into wakefulness, fuelled by his rider's alarm. << I am here. It hurts again. I want to go home. >>

Home. R'hin shook his head at the bemused thought that word roused, and carefully slipping from under Vienne's arm, rose from the bed. As he tucked the blankets back around her, he thought he saw her peeking, but he pretended not to. Just as she pretended to be asleep.

It was cold as he dressed, and it reminded him, anew, of the Turns he'd spent here. The early morning sweeps. Rousing the wings and leading them up into the sky, blinking ''between'' to see that roiling, silvery glut that still made his gut turn over. Gritting his teeth, he did his best to banish those thoughts, those memories.

Slipping out past the curtain, he regarded Oswinth. He couldn't tell whether the blue was awake, and Leiventh was too distracted to ask. Just in case, he nodded respectfully towards the blue as he passed. Down the rope he climbed, in the near dark, letting out a curse as his foot slipped off the final rung and landed awkwardly. It was uncomfortable, more than painful, and he walked quickly, fueled by an urge to leave, tension riding his every stride.

Leiventh's whirling eyes drew him onwards in the dark. His hand found the bronze's hook nose, and ran from there, down the length of his neck, his side, and finally to his flank. Vienne's bandage appeared to be sealing the wound still, though he felt a shudder through the bronze's hide as his fingers brushed near it. Jungle rose around him, and the scent of fresh, warm air.

"We're going," R'hin murmured in response to Leiventh's image, quickly climbing up onto the bronze's neckridges. He felt the pull and shudder of pain as Leiventh pushed aloft, but focused on their destination. In the cold of ''between'', where the only thing he felt was his dragon's hide underneath him, he was keenly aware of the burning sensation on his... no, ''Leiventh's'' flank.

The return to the world was welcome; the dense green forests and the distant mountain a familiar presence. The sun was already up here, warming the air. He felt the joyful greeting of a couple of the dragons, though the rest were muted, still sleeping, no doubt. By the time they'd landed and R'hin had reapplied a new coat of numbweed to Leiventh's wound, the bronze was near asleep. << Saindyth's, >> he murmured sleepily.

It gave him a moment of warning, before Bristia hooked an arm through his, steering him deliberately towards his tent. "You look... something. Not exhausted. Leiventh's too out of it for Saindyth to ask him. But she ''senses''... something."

With an exhale, R'hin shook his head, not looking at the blonde. "I nearly... ''we'' nearly..." it wasn't exhaustion, it was tense, muted terror. The alcohol, the fog and exhaustion of loss and need had dulled it earlier, and he fought to keep it from rising. How could it word it? "''Leiventh'' wanted to win."

"And you?"

"I wanted K'del to win. He's a good man, good for the Weyr. ''Right'' for it."

Bristia pursed her lips, dropping her hand from his arm as they stepped into the shade of the tent, regarding him levelly. "And you aren't?"

R'hin bared his teeth, and moved past her, sprawling onto the couch. "Stop trying to ''harper'' me."

Bristia chuckled, gliding further in and perching on the arm of the couch. "That's a term now, is it?"

"Around you, yes." He reached for her hand, running his fingers over hers. She told him, then, about Iesaryth, about the dragons rising together. Taikrin, which he'd already known, and H'kon, which he hadn't. They stared at one another silently while he processed it. Finally, she asked, "What does this mean for us?"

"Nothing. ''Maybe'' nothing. But we should..." << Leiventh. You and your rider will come, now. >> Evielth, calling them to Monaco. << It's about High Reaches. >>

''Of course it was.'' Bristia must have seen his expression change, because her eyes sharpened. "What?"

"Oriane," he answered, shortly. "Is L'rton still posted over at the Woodcraft Hall?"

"Yes, for another seven or so."

"Good." He pushed up off the couch, walking over to the desk, sitting down to write. "I have something in mind, for a... friend."

Bristia followed him, peering shamelessly over his shoulder. "Blue?" she asked, brow quirking.

"Harper blue," R'hin confirmed, folding the message up, grinning at her look. "Just pass it on. I'll let you know how it goes with Oriane."

"Try not to upset her too much."

"No promises. She's going to want to get involved in this. They ''all'' will."
