H'vier sat on Fayla's couch as the woman went over the paperwork he'd been doing on his own. The first time he came for her to check over his work (unnecessarily, as far as he was concerned), he'd joked that she really just wanted another roll in bed. That had been a mistake; one that began with her slapping him and ended with her crying in his well and truly baffled arms.

He didn't make that mistake this time. And not ''only'' because he didn't want to get slapped by his wingleader again. H'vier was trying very, ''very'' hard to be a better man.

"Everything looks like it's in-- You really need to stop staring at my stomach, H'vier. It's strange to see your eyes so far down." Instead of properly at boob height. "And I'm going to start wondering if I've gotten ''that'' fat."

He hadn't realized he'd been staring at her stomach until she pointed it out, but he lifted his gaze then to meet hers instead. "Sorry. You're starting to show."

"So, I ''am'' getting fat?"

What? That's not what he'd meant. "No. Faranth, woman. No. I ''like'' it."

Fayla didn't look convinced right away. But then she smiled, stretching her legs out across the couch, and poked at his thigh with one of her bare feet. "You could see more. If you wanted."

H'vier was sitting up straighter already, just barely leaning away from the brownrider's touch. "Of course I want to. But I can't. Dammit, you know I can't. I'm ''trying''--"

"Yeah, yeah. You're trying to be a decent human being for once. Just my luck that ''you'', of all people, would be pulling that shit as soon as I want to jump on every hot piece of ass that crosses my path. Selfish." She poked at his thigh again before drawing her feet back with a dramatic sigh.

"I don't want to hurt her again. I've never wanted to hurt her. And I'm fucked if I do." The last point might be the most important.

"You're ''going'' to hurt her again. You know that as well as I do. She knows it, too. Everyone knows it. It's just what you do." Fayla looked down at the paperwork again, then leaned over to set it aside so she could give the bronzerider her full attention. "I don't know why she puts up with you, anyway. You aren't ''that'' good in the sack."

H'vier's Very Serious Thoughts were sidetracked by Fayla's last comment. It earned a frown, but no other response. Instead he rounded back to the first, "You don't really think that, do you?"

Fayla frowned at him, a mixture of honesty and sympathy. "Unfortunately so, Havi. I'm sorry. I think some people just aren't made to do what you're trying to do. It's not really your fault, if you think about it." Really hard. And squint, too. "It's just who you are."

"I love her," he argued. It seemed like a good argument. It was even true.

The brownrider shifted to sit next to H'vier, patting him platonically on the leg before settling her head on his shoulder with a sigh. "I know you do. But you don't love her more than you love yourself."

And that? H'vier couldn't argue with that.
