It was just another crowded night eating dinner in the living cavern at High Reaches. Z’ian was surrounded by his wingmates. They were loud, laughing and jostling against each other as they joked around between bites. He couldn’t have felt any more distant or removed from the entire scene.

He found himself drifting off, staring blankly at the riders around him. He inevitably found his attention shifting to the Istan transfer. It wasn’t the other man’s fault that he was the subject of his staring; he was just a symptom of another larger problem at hand. This upcoming leadership flight, the one he’d been desperately hoping not to be a part of. The one that dredged anxiety up from the pit of his stomach whenever he thought about it.

Tsanth was there in the back of his mind, nagging on about it as soon as the thought crossed Z’ian’s mind and the bronze was reminded. He tried to stuff the ideas away, hide them where his lifemate wouldn’t be able to find them. To afford them both some peace before the inevitable.

He knew how he’d like the chase to go. He wasn’t a betting man, but he’d picked his own favorite out a long time ago. Tonight he’d try to hedge the odds in their favor. Maybe that would help settle his nerves. Maybe.
