|log=The animals caught by Candidates and riders during their expedition to the South appear to have remained healthy after being kept in pens separate from those of the Weyr’s afflicted herd. No dragon is eating from these pens, nor are this herd being culled for the weyrling dragons’ meals, the Weyr’s hopes of rebuilding clearly resting on this stock.

The fact that the Southern herdbeasts have remained healthy might not be terribly surprising, but what has baffled some is that there seem to be a lot more of them than were brought back. The joke is that it can’t be that they’ve mistaken Fort’s autumn for spring and produced calves, for it’s the number of adults that has increased quite dramatically. The Beastcrafters are saying nothing, nor, it appears, is anyone else. Just where did all these new (and healthy) herdbeasts come from?
