The Snowasis is rarely quiet, and even then, the high-ceilinged former
weyr is kept from echoing by the fantastical booths tucked into its
convoluted perimeter. The secluded seating spaces have been shaped from
the truncated stalagmites that escaped the smoothing of the main floor,
and are both softened and separated by colorful hangings that are thick
and opaque enough to make each corner its own private nook.

Some of the smaller stalactites still roam the ceiling, their jagged teeth
tracing a bumpy, inverted spine to the hearth. There, a thick rug with a
low klah table and comfortable armchairs and couches sit, their upholstery
and cushions changed sporadically to match the season: bright, light
colors in the summer, fresh greens and yellows in the spring, warm
autumnals in fall, and clear, rich hues for winter. Small tables litter
the rest of the cavern, enough to fit up to four people each, while stools
stand along the smooth wooden bar behind which is the passthrough window
to the kitchen. Glass-paneled cabinetry behind the bar provides a clear
view of the available liquors, the many colors reflecting the soft light
of glows tucked into strategic niches around the cavern.

It's late. Not ''late''-late, but still: it's pretty late. But considering that dense, white fog blanketing the bowl, and the winter chill, and, frankly, the Reaches' propensity for drink, can it really be any surprise that the Snowasis is busy, busy, busy? All the seats at the bar are taken, and--horror of horrors--there's a ''line'', which is clearly a sign of great distress to Laine. Nevertheless, the apprentice tanner has queued up appropriately, but she does it with a distinct look of displeasure: all crossed-arms and stuck-out lower lip and tapping boot.

Edyis grins as she makes her way in from the bowl, parting company and upon spotting Laine flashes a grin. "You have two options when it gets packed like this." Moving to rest a hand on the Laine's shoulder if allowed. "The first, is to flirt with the barkeep, which doesn't always work and the second" She spots a likely mark at the bar, "Is to find a friendly face already seated." Dark eyes scanning for some sign of the second option.

K'zin's leathers are probably the same set he wears every day, however well-tended they may be, but at least the man himself (and presumably whatever's under the leathers) is clean, judging from the way his still wet, dark short-cropped hair is slicked back as though it's been recently combed. He stops ''short'' when he sees ''the line''. So much for a quick drink! It must be worth it tonight, for he slides into place behind Edyis to chime ''helpfully'' in, "Or wait your turn like the rest of these good thirsty folk." Then, "Edyis, how's the mural?" The latter at least sounds friendly enough even if the former might have an edge of 'been here, done this' to it. Laine gets a friendly, close-lipped smile, but naught else for the moment.

That upright, restless posture dissolves when Edyis touches Laine's shoulder, and the younger girl turns to meet her with a wide, easy smile. "Edyis--hi! I don't know anyone here, and I'm ''dying'' for a drink, so..." Laine considers. Then, brightly: "Ah!" She glances down at her (own) chest and tugs busily at the hem of her shirt, so what little cleavage she's got is more visible, and turns to present herself to the bar. Oh, barkeep~ But, then, suddenly, oh dear: there's a man--a wet, slick-haired man--and Laine is suppressing a wild laugh behind pressed lips and she's tugging at her neckline, covering up. What? Boobs? No boobs here. She's definitely not blushing, either.

Edyis laughs at the sudden cleavage and it's disappearance, she can't help it. "I hadn't quite thought of that I admit." She states on lowering the neckline before K'zin's arrival has the scribe wrinking her nose at him. "That." She states firmly, "Is a very boring answer." As for the mural she chuckles, "It was finished at turnover, have you found Rasavyth yet? He should be one of the ones big enough to actually make out the details on without absurd amounts of liquor. Laine this is K'zin, K'zin this is Laine, don't scare her off!" She teases brightly.

If there were boobs, it's likely that K'zin, being a breathing bronzerider, ''happened'' a glance. But ''since there aren't any'', the brief look was probably just wild and unrealistic imaginings. (No, he definitely looked, but at least he didn't leer.) There's a touch of a blush on his cheeks for what sights were not intended for him and he directs his brown eyes to the older woman. "Haven't, no. Haven't been in since I talked with you about the paint. It's been... busy." He settles for a word that doesn't seem to strike him quite right. "I'm sure he'd be honored," if the dull-hided bronze cared about that kind of thing, which may be or as equally may not, judging from the tone. K'zin looks to Laine and then back to Edyis, "Couldn't if I wanted to. I'm not scary. Ask Suireh." Then immediately, "No, wait, don't ask Suireh. Suireh's scary if you don't know her," so that plan would back-fire horribly.

"It worked!" Laine announces proudly, as the crowd of Boreal wingriders clear out before them, leaving the path to the bar clear and open. "Unless," she hesitates, "it scared them off." Hm. But who cares: booze! She offers a bright smile for K'zin, and even a staccato-quick, "well-met," but she wasn't kidding about that drink--Laine wastes no time in ordering something amber and ''strong''. Only once it's in her hand does she turn and give K'zin a proper once-over. "I don't know Suireh, so. I probably won't. But you don't look so scary," this, reassuring, as though for Edyis' benefit.

Edyis eyes Laine at that, laughing breathily at the thought of cleavage scaring away riders. "Well I'm not one to look a gift runner in the mouth." Moving deftly to claim a seat. She orders a cider. "I've only heard of her by reputation." She states simply to K'zin even as dark eyes appraise him thoughtfully. "And what of late has been keeping a gentleman of your talents busy? Must be quite the thing."

K'zin's lips press together in restrained amusement at Laine's triumph and subsequent thoughts. He follows the pair of women to the bar and slides onto the next stool because, hey, it's open and there's not really many other places to sit even if he wanted to avoid their company. As is, he seems unopposed to keeping it. "Probably for the best, if you want to avoid this whole scaring issue. Perhaps her father too. But I hear from some that he's more approachable if you didn't have a teenage crush on his daughter," K'zin doesn't linger on the topic as he orders his drink when the bartender has a chance to come back to him, a glass of wine that he looks unthrilled by. "Studying," is the simple answer for Edyis. "Going to be trying to convince Quinlys to take me on full time as an assistant for this clutch. Trying to know enough that she has less room to say no." Imagine, working hard to become competent at a job as a means of leverage. The horror! He flicks his eyes toward Laine. "You're not from here, are you?" His brow wrinkles in concentration as he obviously tries to place her face.

Laine is content to lace her fingers around her glass and listen, although in this particular instance, "listen" looks a lot more like "drink", as she eyes K'zin over the rim of her cup. She proposes, uncertainly, with a lifted eyebrow: "are you talking about being a ... weyrling...master? Assistant?" Another drink, and in reply to his question a wan sort of smile. "Tanner. Nabolese. Is it really so obvious? Though in my defense," she frees a hand to lift one finger, "I've been ''here'' a full turn." She turns that finger to point down at the floor. ''Here''. That's probably how she learned all those dragony-people-words, like "weyrlingmaster".

Breathless laughter erupts at K'zin's anecdote regarding Suireh and R'hin. "K'zin, tell me you didn't" She can't stay on that topic or she might stop breathing all together, she wipes a tear from her face as he continues, her smile wide and easy. Of course horror isn't what comes to mind for Edyis when it comes to working hard for competence, rather the thought has her grinning appreciatively at the man. "Take full advantage of it while you can, once they start remembering your face and name you are doomed." She teases Laine warmly.

"Of course I do-id. Did." K'zin lifts his drink quickly. No one heard that, no one. He turns his attention over to Laine and nods. "Yes. I helped out sort of unofficially last cycle, after the second clutch was in the barracks. Splitting time between a wing and the weyrlings isn't... ideal. I must've seen you sometime." It's a quick change to the topic. "Picking up leather for strap repairs or something." Since that's a big part of business for tanners in the Weyr. "And Nabolese too." That makes him thoughtful. "Were you from the main Hold or one of the outlying ones like Edyis here?"

Judging from that smirk? Laine heard. But she doesn't comment; instead, she slides her laughing grey eyes from K'zin to Edyis. "My plan," she says breezily, "is to die as I have lived: in obscurity, having accomplished nothing." She's not serious, surely, as she tips her glass in an ad hoc toast to her new bar companions. Back to K'zin, agreeably, "I'm sure we've run into each other ''some'' time or another." As for where she's from? "Outlying. Not far from Edyis, actually! We just discovered that ourselves." She laughs. "We're yet to determine if we have any mutual friends," she says, grinning loosely at Edyis.

Edyis would roll in her seat if it didn't mean she would end up in the floor. There are tears, tears at poor K'zin's pain, but at least she is trying to hide the laughter. As for Laine's plan, the former scribe just grins. "Imagine, living all of what? Two hours?" She asks of Laine for confirmation, "Away from each other growing up. There was that one harper oh why can't I remember his namesounded like someone was sneezing when they said it Ahato!" She lands on finally.

Perhaps K'zin isn't as oblivious as he pretends to be, given the slight darkening of the blush that had begun to recede. "Well, I won't distract you further," he offers to the women. "Nice to meet you, officially," sort of, "Laine. Edyis. I'm sure I'll see you both around again." Then he's taking his glass of wine and moving toward the patio ledge. Maybe there will be a spare seat out there, even if it's still ''cold''.
