Quinlys found herself pressing one hand to her middle, feeling it. She'd never had a flat stomach; if there was any difference, there, now (and surely there couldn't be, it was far too early), she couldn't feel it. She could imagine, though.

She found herself swallowing.

She found herself ''promising''.

"If you're okay after this," she told it. "I'll keep you. ''Try'' to keep you, at least, because I can't promise. If you're still okay, I'll know that I'm supposed to do this."

She couldn't bring herself to do it.

She could still miscarry. From those trips between, or just because. It happened. It happened all the time.

And part of her... part of her wanted to still be able to change her mind.
